No it's not, do not watch this guy.
>>
>>290621317
I will not watch your video.
>>
>>290621397
It's not my video.
>>
physical manga came in 1 chapter booklets and anime subs came on VCDs or VHS
>>
>>290621546
You mean comic book floppies? by the late 90's they were already doing collections and by the 2000's with Tokyopop they were already doing unflipped manga also DVD came out in 1997, so we already had those with anime being released on it early.
>>
>>290621317
Kill yourself.
>>
>>290621624
I don't wanna.

>>290621317
Not watching the video, but yeah, most people who jerk off about "muh good old days" wouldn't last if they seriously tried to be an anime fan (they wouldn't since all these people tend to "watch" is dubbed Naruto or whatever).
2000s anime was
>crabsticks subs for every older anime that didn't have an official release
>most anime that came out in a year getting maybe the first three episodes subbed and then no real action for months if not years
>said subs being a crapshoot for quality
>even the well translated ones had shitposters like [gg] in the back ensuring it still kind of sucked
I guess it was cool that conventions were smaller? But what you go to conventions for hasn't changed, and if you don't have anything you want at them today, there's nothing you'd want at them back then (and also, more obscure shit had no real place at most conventions, it was just the most popular anime of the moment).

The best time to be an anime fan is RIGHT NOW because all this anime is translated and easy to download, but nobody here cares about that because "anime fan" is just an identity to wear and not part of a hobby one actually engages in.
>>
>>290621317
At least then you were watching big franchises rise out of nothing all around you. Right now we are in a sort of cultural vacuum and the only new "franchises" are low passion isekai. I'm sure we'll reach a new fertile period soon but it is exhausting watching things stagnate and the successful series come and go without forming something bigger. I want novelty, I want to be in awe of shut-ins forming new sensations.
>>
>>290621317
it was pretty cool and you didnt know as much what you were missing is a big part that gets over looked with these type of videos. The person who made it very clearly enjoys being a fan of something more then watching the thing itself.
>>
>>290621673
Also if you wanted to buy anime, it would be single DVDs not boxsets which cost as much as what boxsets cost now, and the boxsets back then when they did come out cost an insane amount. They only thing I would say was better about buying anime back then, is you could trade in DVDs at shops and find used anime places like FYE which it's lot harder to do that now, just gotta sell online. Late 2000's was a perfect time for buying anime because lot of it was cheap used and people were unloading their stuff not knowing the value of it.
>>
>>290621707
That is most shit nowadays. No one has the attention span to even enjoy shit but they need the identity because the cancerous concept of "fandom" was invented to sell shit. They also will say all sorts of shit that basically reveals they don't even read/watch what they claim to like. It is especially common when some retard claims a series has declined, then you actually watch or read it, and you find out that it is about the same if not a more perfect form of what it once was. They all emulate influencers and critics and shit like socially retarded children. They need to have something to speak authoritatively on even if they don't have the attention span for it. It is exhausting. Something in me though wonders if people were always like this, it is just that casuals have become noisy because of shit like aforementioned "fandom" becoming a thing.
>>
>>290621707
The person who made this is likely some guy born in like 2003 pending he's old enough to have grown up in the 2000's when his real era is the 2010's.
>>
>>290621855
the 2000s and 2010s start to blend together partly because everyone loves the 90s and the late 2010s is when culture sort of has stop advancing.
>>
>>290621978
>the late 2010s is when culture sort of has stop advancing
I think a large part of this is still up in the air on whether it is the case or not. The whole lockdown era was absolutely catastrophic for culture. So we don't know if things are set back because of that or if they did in fact naturally just stop advancing.

I can kind of understand it as a zoomer, I'm sure it has only gotten worse for the children of today. Most parents nowadays just don't do anything for their kids and just sit them in front of YouTube. The kid is left to have this as the sole source of entertainment and adapt to it. It can easily pass hours and becomes such second nature that it easily becomes most of what someone does in free time. It only gets worse as the child gets older and starts using other forms of social media. When this is how most people entertain themselves nowadays, of course companies adapt. They don't have much of a choice but to continue on with big old stuff. It is some of the last things people will come out for because it is just a thing to do. There isn't much new material to work with anyway as if they are going to actually make something, it is just going to be a cheap internet skit or whatever. The saddest part is that this system only creates anticipation. Scrolling is "fun" because you are anticipating phenomenon. But it doesn't pay off like a good story does. The feedback loop comes in to play since there is nothing good to move to given the scrollers aren't making anything to become the next big hit. The only way possibly to slightly get out of this is to do what you see companies doing now, picking random creators off the internet, throwing money at them, and seeing if it works. But this whole thing is miserable and sluggish. I could see Japan actually doing the best at this because most of the current big stuff already came from shut ins and shit, Japan essentially is in the future in a way. This probably explains why they continue to eat away at western markets, but it probably also won't make western fans less insufferable.
>>
>>290622465
Yeah I noticed the modern parent doesn't induce their kid into stuff they like or find stuff for them they think their kid will like we our parents or grandparents did, which lead us to find other stuff related to it but newer or whatever like only reason I know so much about 60's music is because of my grandpa showing me all that stuff. I feel like kids today don't have strong interactions and relationships like that and also like they have access to new stuff all the time and have a machine picking what they watch so they don't know what it like being a kid flipping through cable or at a rental store and having just go with something truly random because you can't find anything else.
>>
>>290622564
I only watched Lain as a kid because it was on sell in a store and I bought it for like 7 bucks and I thought the art was cool, I had no idea what the hell it was no system selected it for me.
>>
>>290622679
But do you feel any ambition to make a story for future children to randomly find?
>>
>>290622715
Most people making stories don't have kids so they don't have this ambition. Its why most stories are also about issue right now in this exact moment and not any grander problem.
>>
>>290622774
Modern man only makes entertainment for himself. It is the true reason we don't get much lasting new stuff. Obsessive fans are obsessed because they see themselves in the work like a mirror. Most people nowadays are narcissists. When you spend large amounts of time in front of a screen, you only have to think about yourself and your thoughts. I don't think the internet is evil or anything. But it is obvious that we aren't really adapted for something like it. Hopefully people at some point realize the source of struggle and raise their kids right, but a lot of people, especially now just want to blame everything on some nebulous societal system and not take control of their own lives.

>can quickly torrent hundreds and hundreds of fully-subtitled series, including old obscure shit I never thought possible
It's never been a better time to like anime.
>>
>>290623202
But it was-uh-like better in the past because the new stuff doesn't make me nostalgic yet.
>>
>>290623202
Funny enough thats not what the video is about its mostly about fandom and online debating

It wasn't hard, but it also wasn't so immediate either. You'd often have to wait for an episode to get subbed.
>>
>>290623471
>Wait forever for subs
>Wait forever for dubs (if you cared)
>Wait forever if it was going to air on TV
>Wait forever for the physical release (If you're a buy a fag)

I remember waiting for Turn A Gundam to air on Cartoon Network as a kid, only for it to never air and then waiting for it to get sub only to watch it when I'm in my late 20's because I forgot about it.

I don’t see how it’s different than most people who watched tv/reality tv, hell’s kitchen and popular movies and never really connected with anything deeply.

So many boomers and millenials are just as lame and shallow and empty and zoomers. Agency and coolness has always been for the select few.

My parents didn’t show me or tell me about anything cool, I saw so much stuff on TV and the internet and eventually learned to seek cool for myself

We had shit like One Manga in the 2000s, and some people had US Shonen Jump and/or Shojo Beat subscriptions or got them from magazine sections at Walmart even my local drugstore that had been in my hometown since the 50s had Shonen Jump in the 2000s and you could get shit Tokyopop had licensed at the public library. And for anime we had limewire and/or kazaa to pirate and get fansubs I was 8 in 2000 when I learned how to use them from my friend who's family were illegal immigrants, it's also how I first saw Dragon Ball GT, and you could rent VHS and DVD from places like Blockbuster or Hollywood Video or even the public library.
Then you could also find all your merch and DVD/VHS/volumes at conventions full of dumb middle school girls doing shit tier cosplay as anime boys and doing yaoi/gay but actually lesbian since they were both girls even if they were poorly crossdressing, shit thinking they were being transgressive while all the middle aged guys watched and the high school age to mid-30s girls/women beat teenage boys with yaoi paddles, which honestly made it nice to be a fat ugly bastard junior to never have to worry about getting beat with a paddle.

This.

really
>>
>>290621317
For the current tiktok anime crowd it would be.
>>
>>290621317
It really honestly wasn't that much different for me, I was already torrenting shit in that decade. At that point I even had a friend or two to talk about it. Stuff was already getting dvds and tanks. I guess it wasn't as socially acceptable, but honestly no one really cared.
I don't engage in cons and all that idk if the video talks about that. Importing stuff was harder, but at that time I didn't really have an income that would allow for it plus I was able to pirate anything I wanted to watch or read. Although I will admit I do have an easier time finding things now, but even back think it only took a tiny bit of digging for me.
Now, that I think about it wading for decent fansubs or a show getting dropped was a little annoying.

It's real, fujoshits have always had brain problems. The specific incidents that I had in mind are a pair of middle school girls doing a Naruto and Sasuke pair cosplay going around groping and dry humping each other as though they were jamming a dick right up the yaoi hole as part of the cosplay skit competition for the year, and for the yaoi paddle shit the time I first have in mind is a friend who was cosplaying as Kurama from YuYu Hakusho when we were in high school getting wacked with one a few times by this fat greasy 30-something fujoshit since the con hadn't banned yaoi paddles yet and Kurama was her husbando.
As far as other fujoshit degeneracy, a few had wormed their way in to being staff since the guy running the con was a foreveralone 45 year old 5'3'' fat man so the fujos got away with doing stuff like "yaoi chicken kiss" as a comepition on the stage, with a prize of a few conbucks that could be used for the trash that vendors had abandoned in previous years.
In the early 2010s since the middle school fujos were in high school and hadn't been replaced by new ones instead being replaced by middle school boy shonenspics and the former high school age fujos and cosplay guys were instead doing room parties with whatever cheap alcohol they got from their negligent parents so the newly in high school fujos were trying to get into those. One of the guys I knew got in trouble for fucking one of said underage drinking 14 year old fujoshits and still is on the sex offender registry for it. Speaking of, one of the guys from anime club back when I was in high school got locked up for a bit for raping a retard girl from the special ed class in a bathroom at school, then later went to prison for fucking a 12 year old he swore told him she was 14 as though that changed anything.
I grew up in a mixed suburban/rural area too, so it wasn't some kind of big city degeneracy either. Cons just used to be like that.

Everyone in my country was a fan in the 80s, was it really that hard for burgers?
>>
>>290621673
Add on that almost all anime factoids were made up bullshit and fan theories that people would treat you like a retard for not believing. The sheer volume of misinformation in the 2000s is staggering.

>>290629027
No real point to sage when it's invisible and /a/ is the kind of board where it'd take a couple hours for a thread to die anyways.

>>290621673
Viewing rooms have disappeared, and those always had tons of random shit because they needed to fill hours. It was great. Back in the late 90s/early 00s you'd have all sorts of weird fansubs

And the subs weren't all that crabstick, are you Chinese or something?
>>
>>290630053
>Viewing rooms have disappeared,
Only in super big conventions where the showrunners sell out to companies paying for a lot of spaces to do giveaways and the like.
I was at Anime North last year and they had a few viewing rooms still, including an LD viewing room of all things if I recall.
>And the subs weren't all that crabstick,
Depended, but a lot of the older anime especially had shit subs.
I would genuinely say ZZ and V Gundam were unwatchable with their subs. ZZ was basically like the old animelabs DBZ subs, and V Gundam is just like incomprehensible and outright makes stuff up when it'd be funny.

Also applied to airing anime, but given how so many groups would just dick around on the five most popular shows of the season it barely mattered anyways.

It was way worse in Finland, manga was defined in the dictionary as "Japanese porn comics" and the parliament tried to get Dragon Ball banned for being "hardcore child porn".
>>
>>290631957
>manga was defined in the dictionary as "Japanese porn comics" and the parliament tried to get Dragon Ball banned for being "hardcore child porn".
Considering even so-called “mainstream” anime like Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket contains pedoshit and incest, were they really so wrong?

I just miss fansubs. All groups now just rip official releases with subpar subtitles.
