I just finished the movie an hour ago. It kinda choked just a bit near the end but until the point where Kyon starts interrogating himself I can honestly say I've rarely ever been so invested in a movie.I felt so bad for the alternate Yuki, she was so helpless and scared of people. I wanted to help her. I thought momentarily that Koizumi would be the one behind the events of the movie. After all, it was established in the last episode of season 2 that he and Mikuru were a little at-odds, and I figured the words of the alternate Koizumi might be a hint.Speaking of season 2, what a gigantic waste of time! Besides the first episode, so much of it amounts to nothing of importance. I sat through the endless 8 because I figured that was the way it was meant to be watched. There was no payoff, the whole thing just feels like a stupid joke. The Sighs episodes are just completely pointless, no one needed an explanation of how their movie came to be; we already saw it, and that's enough(Side note: I think Kyon's commentary on the film(and most of the show) is annoying and superfluous). Overall, I still love this show, and I'm sad it's over now.

>>290630492The Sigh episodes were written before the movie episode, as Sigh was the 2nd LN released, whereas whilst I am not entirely sure as to when exactly the movie short story was released, as the collection of short stories that comprise the 6th LN were released independently before the release of the 6th LN, which is made evident by the first 2 short stories taking place before Disappearance, whilst the latter 2 take place after Disappearance, with Disappearance being the 4th LN, nonetheless it is clear how the movie short story was written after Sigh, as a payoff to the movie that Haruhi had made during Sigh.As to the regards of your experience of the movie, feeling bad for alternate Yuki as her own character separately from her existence as the idealized embodiment of how original Yuki subconsciously wished herself to be, is missing the point, the reason to feel bad for Yuki is her isolation from and neglect by her peers, whom she wishes to have closer relationships with, as a result of her being so different from everyone else, having been born without social skills, and her lack of emotional intelligence resulting in her trying to bottle up these feelings, instead of addressing them properly, causing her to eventually lose control, lash out against the world, and create the alternate world as a vent to her frustrations, and fulfilment of her deepest desires, despite the fact that in the process she effectively erases herself from existence and replaces herself with a completely different person whose life she wishes she had. Thus the creation of the alternate world itself is meant to be viewed as a bad thing from original Yukis perspective, as it was an ultimately bad outcome for her (she no longer exists), brought forth by a desperate attempt to fulfil her desires.

>>290630492>The Sighs episodes are just completely pointlessHow are they pointless? They show character development for everyone involved, you can see how low Haruhi can fall when she's just being enabled in a setting that feeds into a god complex, this is also where you can see Kyon deeply cares for her, he wanted to beat her ass for her own sake. It's a good arc that highlights how Koizumi, Mikuru and Nagato are a bit at odds and also creates some conflict and tension between Haruhi and Kyon, without that Kyon's choice to go back doesn't have as much weight as it does in Disappearance.

the cute
>>290633052Your alt Yuki interpretation is correct but people will still naturally "anthropomorphize" her further and it's fine and healthy to do what, the opposite would be weird
>>290633052I know Yuki's decision is wrong, of course. I guess I didn't think she had much in regards to desire. I had interpreted her "malfunction" as a sort of data leak resulting from the 600 years of the time loop. Thinking back on it though, she did have an interest in computer games. I suppose I took the latter half of "humanoid interface" more seriously than the former. Alt Yuki is just so tragically cute though!>>290635517I agree, that character development is good, but it only happens in the last episode of the arc. The whole thing reeks of a tell-don't-show mentality. We already know the making of their film was a shitshow because we've seen it already, it speaks for itself, and we know Haruhi probably bossed everyone around and had few concrete ideas because she's Haruhi.
>>290635935>tell-don't-showInterestingly enough I feel like Haruhi is one of the more "show don't tell" anime around, there's a lot to be interpreted about what Haruhi's antics mean to Kyon and herself and how she grows as a person. Yes you'll get some verbal confirmation at some point (eg Kyon's big speech scene in Disappearance, or when he explains exactly what Haruhi seeks in Indignation) but it usually comes after a while and observant watchers can already pick it up. This and Kyon sometimes adding his own spin on the commentary too.As for this movie arc I think rather than being redundant, it's a pretty big defining conflict moment. This is what Haruhi at her worse could become, a self centered person who sees others as means to an end, objects for her amusement. This goes a bit deeper in that direction than the simple escapism of the Melancholy dream sequence. While I think the anime added a LOT by having the actual movie be broadcast as episode 0 without any context, these are 2 different stories when you think about it.

>>290636042Indignation? Am I forgetting something? I'm liable for it, I try to take shows slow and not binge them.I can see your point about their movie and its making being 2 different stories, I just wish the latter had more going on. Perhaps I was disgruntled by how weak I found the Endless 8 payoff to be, but I wish there was more going on. In the last Sigh episode, it's made clear that all the extraordinary cast members have their own views regarding Haruhi that they'd assert over the others, and that they're kind of at-odds. I would have liked to see more of that, it feels like such a tease. In retrospect, I was probably spoiled by how great of a finale Season 1 had. I think it stuck the landing better than most shows I've seen
>>290636314>IndignationThat's an unadapted book, the 8th (the anime is around the 5th-6th).>Endless 8 payoffYeah, it's a single story, not an entire ARC. I think the payoff is nice and in tune with what the rest of the anime is about: you should just go out and do something, anything, even something silly (that's why Kyon plays poker at the end and says "I'll remember to bet next time"). It's just not "8 episodes" nice. The way I see it, season 2 has strong moments but it kind of requires Disappearance to be a cohesive whole, without that it's more like a season 1.5 with added stories here and there. It's required for Disappearance to work because you want Haruhi to show her worst sides before making Kyon miss her.
>>290636314>I was disgruntled by how weak I found the Endless 8 payoff to beThe real payoff for Endless 8 is the movie.
>>290625593>stares back
>>290636377I think I was disappointed with what finally broke the loop. I was seriously paying attention to any loose end in the dialogue, trying to figure out "What's she been saying all this time?" I thought maybe there'd be something notable about the bugs, that butterfly from one of the walkouts, hell even her reaction to Yuki's masks. I suppose she'd never studied with other students before, but from the way things were going I expected Kyon to suggest something active and fun.I think Haruhi should maybe have been a tad more annoying in Sighs, or maybe I think there's just a lot less opportunity than season 1 for there to be conflict where botha) Haruhi is domineering and headstrong to Kyon's annoyance, andb) there's enough implied space between conflicts that I can believe things could blow over.In essence, a question of pacing.I also think the Season 1 finale did a lot better than Disappearance concerning Kyon admitting his enjoyment of Haruhi. In a sort of cross-examination style setting like in Disappearance, I want something that digs a little deeper. I think for the way he comes to realize his destiny in the Season 1 finale, they nailed it.
>>290635935Telltale signs that Yuki had desires are a) the fact she takes off her glasses after Kyons compliments her how she looks better without them, and b) the following exchange from the climax of MelancholyYUKI.N> We wish for you to return to this world. Haruhi Suzumiya is a vital observation subject. An important being that may never be born into this universe again. I also individually feel that I want you to return. The letters were fading. The frail cursor slowly produced words. YUKI.N> Another visit to the library wouldOf course there are other moments, like the aforementioned Day of Sagittarius, as well as her quite blatant expressions of emotion during Endless Eight, but the critical part about these 2 is that they happened in the first LN, and thus serve as a sort of foundation to her character, with the quote above serving as the foundation for why she left alternate Yuki with the memory of the library, because that memory had meant a lot to her.But I am curious of whether you were actually aware of this quote, because the dub Im pretty sure doesnt translate the text she is writing on the computer screen, and Ive seen at least 1 sub that doesnt bother putting up translations, so you might of missed that.>>290635930I know, I know, I just get quite anxious whenever someone only talks about alternate Yuki in the context of Disappearance, as it can very easily mean that they are disregarding original Yukis value as a person/character, which I feel a duty to quickly correct, the fact that alternate Yuki has her own struggles separate from the ones original Yuki has is perhaps the single most important difference between the 2, even more so than their different personalities, and adds to the overall differences between the original world and alternate world that feed into Kyons epiphany, but ultimately alternate Yuki is a side character, whereas original Yuki is a main character, so obviously the latters struggle is more pertinent to the story
>>290637106>I think I was disappointed with what finally broke the loopIf you look at it like "the solution is homework" then I agree with you, but I'd argue the solution would've been more or less ANYTHING as long as Kyon got his head out of his ass and lead something instead of just following.>I also think the Season 1 finale did a lot better than Disappearance concerning Kyon admitting his enjoyment of HaruhiIt's kind of interesting how the two scenes are pretty similar, in a mirrored way maybe. In the season 1 finale Kyon is trying to convince Haruhi there's something worth in the real world, but in Disappearance Kyon is just trying to admit something to himself. Something he denied but very unconvincingly when you think about it, just looking at his visceral reaction to the new world and any chance he has to fix it.I guess you're right that it doesn't explore WHAT makes it fun and worthwhile since Kyon just says "man that's fun, obviously it is". But just like other aspects of Haruhi I'd say it's implied well enough, you can say he values the things they *really* did, better than even an idealized version of them (like how OG Yuki is more valuable than Disappearance Yuki). It's not explicitly discussed but I've always felt that. Just like how Haruhi is actually not really interesting in the supernatural, it's more about self actualization.
>>290637106>>290637247The entire point of Kyons arc in Disappearance is IMO summarized by what he says to alternate Yuki right after he hands back the invitation letter to her.But you know, Nagato...I already belonged here to begin with. That's why there's no point in me enrolling. After all...After all, I'm a member of the SOS Brigade first and foremost! That is, Kyons arc in Disappearance is about him accepting/embracing where his place in the world is/where he belongs to, throughout the tv show, Kyon has been a reluctant protagonist, believing how a normal guy like him has no business being forced into the situation he is in, and Disappearance is all about him embracing the fact how him being a member of the SoS brigade is exactly where he belongs to, and thus becoming an active protagonist. And considering the following quotes from Tanigawa, I believe how this is the correct interpretation.Tanigawa: For me, I felt that I thought up a very honest story. Until this story, Kyon’s identity was always wavering, but now there’s a story that fortifies it. I felt it was a story the Haruhi Suzumiya series needed but I didn’t know if it would be interesting or not. Even now I don’t know for sure.Tanigawa: I made the decision for Kyon to finally become the protagonist in Disappearance.
>>290637216>YUKI.N> Another visit to the library wouldThat really was a formative experience for Yuki. That's how she projects happiness in Disappearance as well. Love that.>>290637449>After all, I'm a member of the SOS Brigade first and foremost!Yeah that links with Kyon valuing his "real" lived experiences more than anything else.If Haruhi (the character, and arguably the series) is about self actualization, Kyon in Disappearance would be more about self affirmation. He's always been in that hazy fog of denial and he's dragged and forced to reaffirm what everything means to him. Identity really is a big part of that movie.
>>290637216You're right, I did miss that. I foolishly assumed what she would have been writing would only be pertinent to the given situation.>>290637247I agree that the solution could have been anything. I grew pretty frustrated with Kyon during the Endless 8, since if he knows they've been stuck for centuries, he should logically have tried to do something totally crazy at some point, since he has the mental safety net of the possibility of an awkward situation being erased.>>290637449Yes, it's about Kyon accepting that he is a proud member of the club.Still... my heart melted when alt Yuki came close to tears, pathetically trying to take her form back. It's so sad! I choose to view it (in a bigger picture way) as her feeling rejected on the basis of wanting to be normal, until Kyon promises the real Yuki that he'll never give up on her at the end. Of course alt Yuki isn't as important as the real deal, but she's still sort of an expression of the real Yuki's desires, if that makes any sense.
>>290639352>he should logically have tried to do something totally crazy at some point, since he has the mental safety net of the possibility of an awkward situation being erasedYeah he was in a no-loss situation, but the point was him being too passive I guess.>she's still sort of an expression of the real Yuki's desiresAgreed, I don't think you can completely separate her from the real Yuki's identity. It's more like a twisted version of it, beautiful in her own way. But when you think about it, Kyon has gotten no less intimate with the real Yuki than he did with the alt one. The final scene on the rooftop and Yuki's "thank you" are incredibly important moments for Yuki, probably not second even to the library visit.
