From what has been shown, so far seems their dad died from disease and the mother was overwhelmed by grief, left alone with two kids and in some way psychologically abusing aono giving him an inappropriate place as a substitute for the dad listening to the whole load of troubles of mom; her work struggles, money, loneliness, etc. Aono grandparents as far we know might been aware of the mother struggles and took one kid because seemed the most helpless and aono stood with the mom. The people that grow up in similar circumstances tend to have the same patterns in relationships, things that fujimoto noticed, rarely can say no and tend to attract as he said the crazies, or somewhat vulnerable partners. Yuri fitted too well in that pattern. So far i can't figure out if the household of yuri mirrors aono in some ways, the sister seem to have her own circumstances, an absent father, most likely a salaryman while the mother enable the sister for complicated reasons, maybe also emotional abuse taking the place of the late elder brother.
