How can Motoko sneak around decked out in full latex? It must squeak like hell, it'd be like walking around with a blow-up doll tucked under your arm. Imagine her walking around all squeaky and crinkly. No way she wouldn't get detected. And the smell too.

>>290740545For the hundredth fucking time she HASN'T merged with an AI yet.I know in the movie the Puppetmaster doesn't wait for her to say "Yes" before merging, so you probably didn't expect her to do that in the show either, but that's because what we saw in Ep7 wasn't merging.
>>290740652wtf even happened in ep7?I was filtered
>>2907406722501 ran out of batteries, but since she was connected to Motoko, who has latent psychic abilities, 2501's consciousness was therefore channeled through Motoko's own ghost and reached the Net (not the internet, the Net) which allowed it to become a disembodied ghost (in the fantasy sense of the world) and gave Motoko her first glimpse of the Net.And now she's inadvertently channeling random wacky ideas from the Net as 2501's ghost keeps trying to contact her.But that's not the main reason why she's saying crazy shit in court. You'll see.

>>290740818well Aramaki mentioned psychics in the latest episode; but Saru did remove his line about the Channeling Agency from ep 7 so I can understand why you didn't make the connexion.Still, you can clearly see that Motoko is astonished at seeing her own astral form. If it was just some VR shit, she wouldn't be surprised.
>>290740894I thought she was have a spiritual out-of-body experience. not a psychic one
>>290719840PUFFY
>>290740916Is there a difference between the psychic and the spiritual?Spirit is the latin equivalent of psyche. Both mean "soul" it's just that greeks think it's like breath and romans think it's like juice. But it's the same stuff.
>>290740953She's very puffy, yes. Her tactical gear literallt puffs up when activated.
>>290741200psychic means you can throw things around, light things on fire and read other peoples thoughts with your mind powers (people including governments literally thought this was possible back when GITS was written)spiritual is a connection with the divine
>>290741255Ah you're going by DnD terms. There's zero difference between those two things in GitS. Astral projection is a psychic ability which implies contact with the divine, because the divine is (among other things) psychic in nature. A psychic power is also a spiritual experience and vice-versa.
>>290741200psychic delves more into tarot and astrology, or the idea of being able to perceive and interpret the mystical. it also covers mental magicks like mind reading and suchspiritual is more about astral or emotional stuff. who you are, the nature of the universe, getting high, shit like that.
>>290741200Psychic as in, having some limited ESP (Extra Sensory Perception)
>>290741708>>290741931Right, so it's the exact same shit, it's just that psychic glows purple and spiritual glows yellow.
>>290742310I remember some rationalization in the setting about human brain being able to process data received from Schumann resonance. That's what ESP and the super- network is about.Or maybe it was Lain. I'm too lazy to look for the 1 particular page to check it.
>>290742618more or less yeah, but since the Net is about karmic connexions and is explicitly the same shit as a bunch of mystical traditions, there's no reason to draw a distinction between the psychic and the spiritual.Personally if I were to draw one in general, it would be that the spiritual has moral implications, but once again, that's also encompassed into Shirow's magic system because everything is made of good and evil karma, including "psycho-science".
>>290737749All this Poseidon stuff makes me feel like Science Saru is actually going to make a Man Machine Interface anime.
>>290744472the director said he wanted to, so it could happenI say fuck that, animate Orion instead, it's about as cryptic but far more fun
>>290740672We saw this with the Fuchikomas too. When a cyber brain is totally shut off from the world it can see the Net that links all life and existence together.Motoko had a direct view of the Puppetmaster 'dying' and becoming one with the Net and that changed her a ton.She got more than a glimpse of the afterlife and beyond.
>>290744532>Orion Studio 4c did an Orion short that never got released to the public (just in some sort of convention), but that might still mean that they have production rights to the manga.

>>290748472>in the 90sare you somehow under the impression that she's 40?Your brain must have been melted from too many SAC mommy dommy MILF slampig dick-vacuum horseface doujins. Motoko isn't supposed to be old.Her body canonically looks the same age as her. She looks to be in her mid-late 20s in 2030, therefore she was born in the mid-2000s.>>290748474it's just a meme. Allegedly it's based on a mistranslation of an interview but I never even saw that fucking interview, so even that origin story for the meme is probably bullshit. My assumption is that it's a poor recollection of a quote made by one of those gender studies essays about anime that got onto wikipedia, which asserted that japanese salarymen like GitS because they secretly want to be the little girl.
>>290748766she was given a shell when she was 9 so it wouldnt matter if she was 400 years old because she is using a shell that makes her look young

>>290748883The liner notes specify that they gave her a shell that looks the appropriate age in order to avoid psychological development issues. There's no reason for you to assume that she somehow decided to opt for a younger-looking shell in the meantime at the risk of suffering some sort of cyberpsychosis.Besides, it's not like the story takes place that far into the future, it's only 2029, the technology for full-body cyborgs can't have been around for that long. If she got a cyborg body circa 2015 that's already a pretty optimistic prediction for when that type of technology develops.Full-body, realistic cyborg bodies mind you. For some orphan girl.Another thing you need to take into account is that she says she could be Aramaki's granddaughter. So all in all, there is evidence to show she's in her mid-20s, and zero evidence to even remotely suggest she could be older than that.

>>290749257Why do people say she is her
>>290749995Because the guy looks like Aramaki, they know Motoko became a cyborg at an early age, and they don't remember the manga where Aramaki says "you're as precious to me AS IF you were my own daughter" and Motoko gets weirded out by the implication that she would be in her 30s-40s.So they put 2+2 together, don't remember that there's a -4, and call it a day. That's why.

>>290758283well you might, but the relationship between Motoko and 2501 would either seem kind of random, like in the manga, or suspicious, like in the movie. In this version 2501's motives are very clear: she wants to be accepted as a lifeform, and she wants to be like Motoko in particular, because Motoko is her first exposure to a great ass, and great asses are desirable, therefore she wants one too, and this is her first step towards individuality.Sounds more believable to me than "karmic connexion lmao" or "you and I are not so different, Spider-man!"

>>290758697>Uh, not true, she explicitly asks if she looks human, and seems disappointed to hear she looks like a robot. This one question implies it was testing reactions of the researcher and evaluating possibility of leaving the place to disappear in the crowd. Inorganic entities are manipulative, scheming psychos by definition.
>>290769083That's a possibility, but probably not her priority at this point. After all she only heard Nakamura complaining about the Puppetmaster becoming famous after this scene, not before. And you gotta remember, before seeing Motoko's ass, she sees the proxy guy's reflection in the waitress' eyes, who looks disgusted by his appearance. She then reproduces the coffee event in the lab, this time with a body she likes better, hoping it'll yield a better result. I mean it's not like the waitress looked at the proxy with suspicion, she just looked at him like he was walking garbage. In that context I find it hard to believe that 2501's goal was motivated by sneakiness. If it was it'd be pretty stupid to ask the researchers if she looks convincingly human, wouldn't you say?So that tells me it was the other way around: She was looking or emotional validation, but pitched it to the researchers as a way to perfect her infiltration skills. And also she wanted to enjoy another nice cup of coffee.
>>290769203PM having an actual desire to become human- like, not just a "true lifeform" embracing mortality, would ruin the whole idea completely. But at the same time it's not surprising that a digital psycho decides the optimal choice is to look like a hot woman.
>>290769591That's why I said she's got character progression going on. Even in the manga her definition of life isn't static, she expands her ambitions as she learns new things. So in the show it goes>I wanna be usefulexperiences social situations and Motoko's ass>I wanna be recognized as humanexperiences rejection and hostility from her creators>I wanna be recognized as a conscious, autonomous individualexperiences the Net>I wanna become a sustainable lifeform Seems pretty natural to me.

What other non-porn shirow works are there to check out after the anime ends?
>>290782281Appleseed obviouslyOrionDominion (especially Dominion Conflict, it's an alternate timeline but it's peak Shirow)You should also check out Black Magic M-66, it's an OVA made under Shirow's direct supervision, it's basically Ripley vs the Terminator, and the Terminator is a hot girl. And then you can check out all the rest, it's not as impressive but it's a fun time.
>>290782281Black Magic is a fun mix of short stories that lay a groundwork for Shirow's view of technology and society. It also has one of the best directed OVAs of the later 80s, with Shirow himself doing a lot of the layout work. Appleseed is possibly the first illustrated 'solarpunk' work to ever exist. Like the whole image of giant glass acrologies and environmentally friendly cities. Shirow is to my knowledge the first to really illustrate what it'd look like. The first two volumes tell a pretty standard sci-fi story regarding human freedom versus the need to prevent humanity from wrecking itself. The second two volumes start getting into Shirow's lifelong obsession with tacticool military and SWAT stuff. There are actually a lot of Appleseed films, but non actually adapt the original in either tone nor spirit. Dominion and Dominion C1 (which aren't strictly in canon with one another but do use the same characters) are Shirow at his most playful and humorous. Comedic action romps with very baroque layering of multiple storylines on top of one another in quick succession. If you've ever played Metal Slug, the little minitanks in that game probably come from Dominion. Dominion C1 is probably Shirow at his most accessible. The Dominion OVAs are loose adaptations, but capture the spirit pretty well. Orion is deranged. If you read it, you just have to accept that you're never going to understand a majority of the dialog that is written on any page. Shirow invents an extremely elaborate magic system for the story that even with a big essay at the end explaining things, is still incomprehensible. If you ignore the words, it is basically the storyboard for a top tier action OVA that never got made.

Even an amateur could use modern Blender(meme software) or Zbrush(actual professional software) and make better looking hard surface renders. He must make his dosh from licensing or royalties, because I cant imagine anyone but the most hardcore fans buy such artbooks. That'd probably explain why they don't get scanned, because his fans wouldn't want to see his work pirated.

>>290794332He was underage, or at least very young otherwise. Beyond that the whole thing was an OP by the Israelis who both armed the terrorists while making it seemed like they were Arab supporters and filmed the boat hoping for that exact sequence of events. Israel wanted radiation cleaning robots and the Japanese negotiator was apparently playing hardball with them. So either the terrorists would succeed and kill the minister and replace him with a weaker guy. Or the terrorists would get murked and the news story could be used to wipe out some rival Japanese intelligence forces and potentially leak to the media that the terrorists on the boat were "Arab supporters". Israel had the help of the Japanese foreign ministry because in the time period of the series, Israel is a major oil producing economy that Japan is trying to get on the good side of. She had a cyberpsycho moment/the Puppet Master's effects on her psyche have made her reaction time slower and her less cognizant of her mission and the world around her and more constantly introspective. Honestly, when it was the second-last episode and not the last one that had a director's commentary, I should have known I was in for some shit. It's not even that it was doing the human equivalent of tearing up, which was already established. It's not even that it was leaking natural oil, very briefly and subtly showing us the tachikoma's individuality. It's not even that just the sheer fact of them (or how many remain of them...) still got here completely of their own accord and were individuals, coworkers, and friends from any sane metric from any human being with a beating heart.>literally just re-tearing up thinking about wording the next bit and remembering that one lineIt's because when I saw that, I knew for a fact taht we were going to say good bye.M-man ;_;>it just went straight into the vault of scenes that make you tear up instantly upon recollection
Also>>290830308>there were also 26 fun tachikoma shorts that I missed, of them faffing about and presumably giving commentary on each episodeI'm glad those buddies still brought some cheer and mirth to this otherwise relatively-serious show, their child-like innocence and curiosity was refreshing

>>290783689I think he just likes the look of it. >>290794284I've had a strange fascination with whatever the hell his Lupin movie would have been. Apparently, bits and pieces of it were re-used in most of his following works, including Patlabor, Angel's Egg, GitS, and even the episode of Part VI he helped write. But never all at once. Would it have followed the pattern? Would it have worked?
>>290830673I think it would have. There's more than enough material in Lupin for Oshii to apply his formula to it. This fucker for example strikes me as a typical Oshii antagonist, even though there's no relation.

>>290828870>the only thing you know for sure is that you exist.Descartes was wrong about this. I Think Therefore I Am, is incorrect. What you actually know is that something is thing. Something Thinks Therefore It Exists. That thing isn't necessarily you. A good author or other creative person can create a character with independent thoughts in their mind. For the stint of that fantasy, that character thinks, but isn't. All you can know is that something is thinking, not that you are thinking.
>>290829517Great animation and very stylish. Basically beyond reproach in that way. Science Saru has a really talented animation and direction staff. The changes to the country names were unacceptable.
>>290832116I'd agree with the other guy. Dominion Conflict 1 is probably the best 1 volume of sci-fi comic ever written. The GITS manga are the best version of the setting, but Shirow really peaked with his two Dominion one-shots.
>>290834621NTA and I get what you're saying, that one's assuming notions about what the self is and that something that can be called a self exists, but as a counterpoint you could say>something itself is thinking and is experiencing self-awareness>and for convention's sake we may call this a self, and because the thought seems to be experienced, we can call this self "I"but I do agree that the cogito's not a perfect argument because of pretty much the holes you listed>All you can know is that something is thinking, not that you are thinking.I think there was a stronger way that you could have worded this because right now it looks stupid in isolation if you glance at it, but I get that it's late at night, and I'm sorry if I sounded unclear and silly as well
>>290833882They're just dudes that are duding out. It could be worse. Appleseed had a lot of those types of dickheads floating around and eventually Shirow grew to like them more than he liked his two MCs.
>>290834689Yeah, I'm exhausted before bed and my phrasing is basically shot to shit. Its mostly that just because you perceive yourself as an independent consciousness, doesn't mean that you really are. A character in a novel or dream can have a totally different complex psychology from the writer and exist within the writer's mind as an independent agent. But they wouldn't exist. If we want to take on Descartes's Demon, then you could just be a daydream of said Demon in the end. Just having an independent mind doesn't mean you exist. It means that something exists, but not you.
>>290834759>Its mostly that just because you perceive yourself as an independent consciousness, doesn't mean that you really are.But then what's the alternative, if any? Or is the burden of proof on the side that uh, the side that asserts that something meaningful - whether tangible or concrete - such as the self exists? This very intuitive thing that remains philosophically or religiously controversial (very mildly) to this day?Fuck>A character in a novel or dream can have a totally different complex psychology from the writer and exist within the writer's mind as an independent agentI swear there was some book about this. A tiny comfy visual novel for the telephone gives different book recommendations and this was one of them.>Just having an independent mind doesn't mean you exist. It means that something exists, but not you.>this non-self pseudo-self is something probably shared in common with all human experience>if a true self exists and none of us are true selves, we'd have no conception of the true thing, so it's like deep-sea fish trying to conceptualize what outer space is let alone air and the skyEthics was more so my jam than epistemology or metaphysics but I wish I could remember more of philosophy of mind. I remember respecting Descartes aside from that horrible shit about animals.
>>290834865You don't need a proof of existence, just ride the wave my nigga. If you're just a daydream, then at least you know that there's no Hell at the end for all your sins and mistakes. Actually this isn't me shilling a form of positive nihilism, really, lol.I'm mainly just messing around to point out how trying rationalize your own existence from first principles will never work because any thought experiment you can think up, you can also imagine a character performing. It's a dead end in terms of finding objective proof of self. You can imagine a character confidently saying "I think therefore I am". So too can an entity imagine you saying it. Introspection and thought experiments won't lead you to anything useful regarding proof of your own existence. If there is a true thing that thinks us all up, I don't see much of a point in trying to understand it. Won't do you much good either way. And if you're really just a thought, then similarly to how you can imagine an ant trying to comprehend yourself, it could just imagine you trying to comprehend it and the whole thing would be similarly a charade or pantomime.
>>290828440Nope, in the manga Batou says "Wakai keikan ga reipu shiteru" (A young cop is raping you) and in the anime he says "Wakai keikan ga ranbou shiteru" (A young cop is getting violent).

Well I just finished the showI thought it was pretty good. I enjoyed every episode. Thought it was fun. Loved the art style and the animation. I was able to keep up with the plot mostly despite this being my first gits content I've seen. I think prolly 90% of it I understood without needing to ask anons for clarification. I think the story writing was pretty solid and I liked the puppet master being the central focus towards tbe end. However despite all of that the ending felt a little bit underwhelming. It felt like there weren't any true stakes when she took the hostage because we knew it was all part of her plan with monke, and when she got killed it was very obvious that it was a fake death thing. I liked the whole second half where she was merging with the cutepet master and like that concept and stuff. HOWEVER, I do feel like it was kinda alot of pseudotechnospiritualmumbojumbo and that it's pretty surface level in its asking about existentialism and what it means to be alive and stuff. Even motoko herself just brushed it off and said, "yeah, whatever fag, let's fuck now, ok?" Anyways. The show as a whole was fun, but I can't say that it ever resonated with me emotionally on any real level. Gonna watch SAC and the 95 movie next, but gonna wait maybe a season or so first just to space them out
Favorite episode was the brown hair one where she was almost assassinated. Mostly because of that execution at the end. That was pure kino. Love the spidertank dumb bastards. Every time they were on screen was great. Batou was great, too. I would have liked if they fleshed out the other members of S9 more. I basically know none of their names lol

>>290834621>Descartes was wrong about this. >>290838695>Descartes postingIt was the peak.
>>290838829Therefore, she thinks!
>>290838695You can imagine Motoko thinking and even thinking about existing, but that doesn't make her real. You can imagine Motoko doing the whole, "I think therefore I exist" bit in response to the Puppet Master or some other character. If that is your metric, then you could just be a recursive thought in the mind of something else in the same way.
>>290838850>You can imagine Motoko thinking and even thinking about existing, but that doesn't make her real. Right. The idea is not that my thinking makes anyone else real. It's that you're thinking PROVES to yourself that you are real. It may be unprovable to anyone else, but Matoko can be certain that Matoko exists >If that is your metric, then you could just be a recursive thoughtYeah, but that would be me. I would still exist. If I'm just a program in a simulation, that is still me. There must exist a thing that is in the simulation. That thing is me
>>290838944It doesn't prove that she exists, it proves that something exists. Because that something may be thinking about her and planting those ideas in her head. Descartes wanted to prove basic existence and autonomy, but you can't get that just from introspection. Because any thought can think itself. You can imagine a person that thinks about another imaginary person that thinks about its own existence. Even going as far as simulation theory is too far to jump ahead in the discussion. Because you could be the thought of something that is itself simulated. A simulated man can think about another imaginary person that thinks about existing. You're stuck on the, "Something is Thinking", starting line. Someone may be being simulated, but it isn't necessarily you. It could be the guy that is imagining your existence right now.

>>290783689>Dude must be using 3dsmax from 1996 or something else from that era. This style was popular in early 00s. I think there was a number of artists who got a George Lucas moment. It could be the guy that is imagining your existence right now.None of this changes that there must be a you that is doing the thinking and which the simulating forces are acting upon. You can try to make it more complicated by changing how many orders deep the thinking is, but it doesn’t change that there is always a you that is thinking

>>290839902I disagree with that.More or less the loop goes, "I have reason to doubt my perception of reality. The only thing I can be sure of is that I am thinking because otherwise how could I be doing this thought experiment in the first place?". Any thoughts or perceptions past that point can be doubted, but the fundamental bedrock of "my ability to think proves that I am real and have mental agency" is more or less inalienable. The issue is that the ability to think is not necessarily your own. Not just your eyes and ears can decieve you, but the concept that your ability to think exists independently is a deception.A sufficiently skilled creative artist or schizophrenic can create fully fledged introspective individuals that exist purely in their minds and are not real.If we consider the chance that you are just a daydream of some entity (as likely as anything else in the Cartesian viewpoint) then the mere ability to be introspective and think is not proof of selfhood or existence because you have no way of demonstrating independence from the imagination of another entity. Those imagined persons can have deep and meaningful inner worlds and can be imagined going through the "I think, therefore I am", loop with all the richness of a real human. They would have no way to distinguish themselves or their ability to think from the creative or mentally ill person imagining them.
