Yes, it's been the romance triangle for a good while now, but thats a consequence of the people involved. The actual problem that they're trying to address is making Yami feel wanted and welcome when she's internalized self-hatred and doubt extremely deeply. Part of the mixup here is that the romance is so much more interesting and enticing to watch unfold, but it truly isn't the point yet, I think. That's why Yami calling Yuu was less of a love story and more of a trauma dump with an emotionally aggressive end, and why Hikari's selfishness looks like it's more about not letting Yuu be the one that does that healing. Hikari wants her friend back, and Yuu is making it more difficult.
