I'm rewatching what Rowan says about Lara's heart blade in the same scene that Lara thinks about Mari. It seems to me like he's saying that the piercing and devouring of the soul is a consequence of the failed relationship with the prince, but it isn't intrinsically how the light stuff works. He also earlier says that the blade isn't the only form the light can take. So the failed relationship put Lara on this path, and as far as he's concerned/aware, Lara can't go back and do things properly and the only way to fix things is to use the fish blade like a blade and pierce the loved one. I've seen some people saying they think this is what always happens, but it doesn't seem like it. So what I expect to happen is Lara and Mari's meetup will prove him wrong, that Lara can go back and have things happen properly. Maybe Mari will say she's fine with being sacrificed to the fish blade (which I've seen thrown around here), but kind of like with Lara stopping the fish blade from hurting the prince before, something will happen to stop it and transform the blade into the light proper. Maybe Lara will kiss Mari right before the blade hits, and it will shatter into light (like in the previous flashback), bathing them in the light.
