Lara's first failed love with the prince came down to appearance. He fell for the idea of her, the beautiful mute girl, and when her transformation happened all those images he'd built up in his head just fell apart. That's probably why episode 7 with Luca accepting the mermaid part of her (fascinated by it) ended up healing that trauma for her.The second time around is different.
