Mushoku Tensei
>Original run November 22, 2012 -

what the fuck
where does all this "grandfather of Isekai" pedestal bullshit for mushoku tensei even fucking come from???
I should have known all those faggots were lying

Even rezeros anime was long before mushoku tensei
On that note konosuba wn started a mere month after MT, it also got it's anime way earlier too though
>>
>>290834631
MT is the series that popularized all the major isekai tropes the generic isekaislop all use. Re:Zero is more unique.

>Timeloop respawn game mechanic is unique

>where does all this "grandfather of Isekai" pedestal bullshit for mushoku tensei even fucking come from???

Its because it held the #1 spot in Narou for a while, and narou authors says reading MT that's on the top of Narou inspired them to write their own stories and publish them on Narou.
The time when MT was #1 in Narou is the so-called Golden Age of Narou by many, and so, it made its way into the zeitgeist.

Its SAO, actually.
That's why there's a lot of literally me OP protagonists in isekai, but femdom-dog MCs like Saito that gets whipped by their heroine is nowhere to be found.
>>
>>290834631
>grandfather of Isekai"
nobody says that
>>
>>290834984
No, it's ZnT. The literally me OP protagonists come from writers making Saito less of a masochistic pussy in the ZnT fanfiction on Narou before it switched to original works only.

This. Re:Zero came out closely before and Konosuba almost the same time, but they didn't have what it takes to be #1, so MT became the grandfather of isekai. Simple as.
>>
>>290834631
Who knows, really it was a friendship of isekai since a lot of the big popular isekai writers were in a writing group together and still hang out irl.
>>
>>290834631
setting aside comments, zero is teni, and mushoku is obviously tensei
at least for that there's a difference
also supposedly zero author is a mushoku fan
>>
>>290835026
MCs like Kirito is still popping out today in isekai, that's how strong Kirito left his mark. Even that Isekai Cheat Slayer manga parodied Kirito as the leader of isekai characters, but Saito is not even relevant at all.
>>
>>290834795
no it didn't, that shit was already so overdone there were a thousand copy-paste examples and a hundred parodies and deconstructions
children like you can't imagine how oversaturated iseaki already was at that point because of the exponential bloat since
>>

Just from using the anime airing time you know is bait. With that said.
I think it started with ZnT. It wasn't the first summoned to another world, but it was the most popular at that time. It still has the battle school harem elements from that time.
Many people were pissed about Saitou being a pussy so they started to write fanfics.
Those fanfics inspired fantasy worlds and MT was the best at that time, it alsonmade a full reincarnation instead of summoning.
Next gen was SAO which used the skills and stat screens.
After that was ReZero and Konosuba, mixing fantasy and statscreen, one for serious and the other for comedies.
>>

>>
>>290835243

>>
>>290835173
Tensei means reincarnation. As in being actually reincarnated in another world from the start all over. Re:Zero is not reincarnation, the MC just got transported. In isekai, there's the transported-type and reincarnated-type.
>>
>>290835282
Playing a videogame and then playing a different videogame is not being transported into another world.
It fits better with the other video game series like .hack, Bofuri, and Shangrila Frontier.
>>

>>

It all comes from retarded secondaries and nuweebs that don't know Zero no Tsukaima and the troves of fanfiction written about it was the true progenitor of the modern isekai
>>
>>290834848
Subaru is a loser, a genuine actual loser forced to legitimately face his worst attributes and reflect on them. He is constantly shown to be a loser through loop after loop, unlike pretty much every other isekai where the audience is often just explicitly told the protagonist 'was a loser' but then just magically gets everything handed to them and solves every problem because the universe is hand crafted to be dumber than the protagonist, it's a classic case where the main character can never be smarter than the author... Which tracks because almost all isekai are written by either hacks or teenagers who going to become hacks.

>>290834631
A lot of people in the West don't understand the actual timeline of events when it comes to isekai. Here's how it actually was
>20th century - pre-isekai
These were your Dunbines, Escaflownes, Rayearths, etc. They were, for all intents and purposes, isekai stories. The word itself probably started being used in this way thanks to Isekai no Yuushi, a fairly popular novel from 1981. However, they still didn't have a lot of the more gamey tropes we see in modern isekai.
>2000s - Zero no Tsukaima, and the rise of Narou
This is the actual starting point for isekai. Zero no Tsukaima set the ground rules for isekai tone and theming. It was also massively, MASSIVELY popular. Narou, on the other hand, was a fanfiction website that gained popularity around the same time. The website was flooded with Zero no Tsukaima fanfiction. Everyone wanted to have their own take on Zeroma's story, and especially the protagonist. The writers were also huge nerds, so they started putting video game logic into their isekai (especially DQ), because that was their main reference for fantasy. It's where we start seeing all the familiar names - Tappei Nagatsuki, for example, started as a fanfiction writer for Zeroma before he decided to write Re:Zero.
>2010s - the golden age
This is when all the important modern titles start to come up. Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, Konosuba, Tensura, Overlord etc. All of them started in 2010-2013, written by people already swimming in the seas of post-Zeroma isekai. It's very obvious if you actually read/watch them - Re:Zero begins with Subaru making fun of the "usual" isekai tropes *(already set in stone by then), and Konosuba lampoons the genre even more. This is also when SAO actually starts being a thing - it existed as a self-published novel since 2004, but the LN only started in 2009.
And of course, all of these titles got massively popular anime adaptations, especially SAO, which was the first to go mainstream in the West.

Mushoku Tensei is just head and shoulders above everything else anon, nothing quite like it has been written really.
There existed some very mediocre isekai series in the past, series that didn’t even manage to surpass MT’s mediocre arcs.
You see when it comes to isekai there was first the dark age.
Twelve kingdoms, escaflowne etc.
These are all works that were mediocre to the core, absolutely unremarkable series made for the female audience forgotten in like a few years and nobody even talked about them for ages. Do you notice how you have to constantly barge in MT threads and remind MTchads how their inferior series also exist? This is because they’re inferior and if you made a thread about them they would die quite fast. In fact they wouldn’t even get like 2 replies. I know this is a hard pill to swallow.

But anyhow, before Mushoku Tensei there was the dark age of isekai. Works such as I mentioned above were frankly trash and nobody took them seriously.
Then came the age of shousetuka ni narou: leadale no daichi nite, Meikyuu harem, Re monster and some new narou series started sprouting but also not many people gave a rats ass about those. Because they had this one gimmick and bam author wrote themselves into a corner they quickly devolved into cheap fast food type shlock. Nobody even cared how they would end and most of them never did end either or ended in a way that was awful.

But then came the light of civilization so to say. Came MT which was like the Roman Empire civilizing all the barbarian savages. It opened the gate. It opened the way.
Sadly of course, even after it showed others the way none of them managed to surpass MT which stayed as a masterpiece to this day.

Just ecelebs being wrong and normalfags parroting them as usual. You need to remember the entirety of anitube had its breakthrough by hating on SAO in particular and LN adaptations in general. There was never a genuine interest in the west to understand isekai and narou, at least not in mainstream discourse. Just people spreading hate and misinformation for profit and people who refuse to engage with the genre in good faith because they were told they shouldn't.

I dislike narou, but alas I'm stuck with various chinese cartoons related to moon culture.
It's like trying to avoid gacha and toobers, you can attempt but cancer will still leak.
For me at least it's sort of interesting looking at what the authors are outside of their series and how it can tie in. I will only add some things that didn't seem posted.
Since fags like to mention it, I'll add in SAO despite being an outlier.
SAO author - 70s birth, shit at games, worse than nintendokiddy /v/ermin, made porn that was essentially a draft of SAO, and two dudes double penetrate the girl the MC was with while he looks on regretting being helpless or something.

Mushoku author - At 13 played arcade fighting games(like Melty) at near tournament level and built 90s PC's, both traits he gave his char (PC thing may not be shown anime wise, along with emulation roms etc), though he got through uni, was one of the leaders in a community, probably married, and a related game company allowed gameplay to be shown in the series.

Rezero author - Likely bad at fighting games though probably likes its skilled players, has Nasu history and probably didn't do well trying Melty.

Slime author - Probably some arcade history, lets a slime do stupid amounts of things that might as well be GPT with physical abilities to nuke or whatever, author himself ended up making his own company.

Overlord author - MMOfag(aka glorified chatroom) salaryman, would at least guess he's Nintendo tier.

Other mentions I guess. Hi Score Girl's author would lose to Mushoku's in game matches. Can I ask most fans/haters to play those games at a decent level or build a 90s PC? Nope, not even moot built such at the age, a man who worked for Google, moved to Japan, married and had a kid there. Which kind of puts into question how well they can judge things, sadly I suppose. I myself mostly stop caring to comment about Mushoku segments after muh broken penor got added though, but I am aware of the rest of the content.
>>
>>290843820
For the char it is interesting how various things get omitted from comments, like how he was bullied because he was helping people, how he saved two kids before isekai, how mana to make less than a cup of water made him pass out and how he constantly trained against it, how he learned multiple languages, how he always got involved with (combat)teachers/books for various things he became capable of etc, was also involved with uni research, always in an easy death state wanting to protect family, has a physically weak body that can't be overcome birth wise, never has sex with anyone but his wives, can be entrusted with children of his friends and obviously his own, and whatever else. Would note though, various things got added as stupidly stronger opponents appeared.
Do I think the Mushoku author is good? No, he's decent though, would like to see non narou/isekai but don't really care to. Nor do I decide to compare him against something like Dunbine, 90s isekai, or Tsukaima, they're just different eras.

Since they got mentioned, I'll also add in DBZ fans. They're obviously a cancerous presence, nothing really needs to be added and they easily should just be ignored, but anyway. When Toriyama's death happened, another death announcement that happened nearly the same time was Tarako. Toriyama was a fan of her work, he made art of her char as well. Goku and her character were even broadcast for the same animation. Despite this such "fans" can often never watch/read DB with young Goku, and called Tarako worthless while saying her death should be ignored in comparison.
I can also bring in fighting games, like with Mushoku. Mushoku's author has Capcom, ArcSys(as shown in the anime), and other companies for what he played. Ex Capcom made their beloved Budokai, ArcSys made FighterZ. These same people of "great judgement" may then whine about Mushoku. Their artist made the style in the 70s as well, it's bizarre how much they latch onto it and even fap to it.

let me guess, you think that isekai means reincarnated into anothe world, and despite even redditors trying to convince you that isekai simply means other world and that tensei means reincarnation, you still cling to your own stupid definition that isekai means reincarnation, and since subaru didn't reincarnate there, it can't be isekai, because you're that stupid.

MT's WN current all-time narou ranking is merely #3 now though, despite the WN still being mostly canonically valid except for some LN-additions that don't really touch much upon the main story, yet lost to a non-canon abandoned beta-version draft from the same era (might catch up to it again, maybe) and a fu/ck/ing food-porn isekai that only started when the golden narou era was already pretty much over.

Around 2011-2015, but the core of it was around 2013. Basically everything related to Log Horizon. Yes, Log Horizon (MaoYuu deserves some credit as well). Log Horizon got published as a LN in 2011. But let's take a look first for why SAO did not "inspire" anything:

SAO got the royal treatment of the fucking "god of editors" Miki being involved while being published in Dengeki Bunko, which at the time was basically the Weekly Shounen Jump of Light Novels: You get in, you'll make it big for sure. And SAO got there because of some writing contest (basically one of the most orthodox ways to get an "in") where SAO's author made a connection with Miki who only THEN looked at SAO's author's personal website and instantly catapulted SAO into the winning rails, getting advertised in that one huge magazine (was it Megami or NewType? I don't remember) along with Toaru and Typemoon. Absolutely no one would think "yup, I can do that as well by... publishing on an aggregator platform somehow!" That whole bit about
>b-but SAO was a WN too so it's MUH true beginning of isekai!
Is all just historical revision after the fact.

Unlike with SAO, Log Horizon's WN on Narou receiving a Light Novel version looked far more natural and "grassroots" that can be imitated, with a more realistic prospect of a publisher, Enterbrain, although it's also not as simple as that, as the author's previous work MaoYuu was also published on Enterbrain previously after their editors found it posted as a play on 2ch. Still, what Log Horizon did is much easier to imitate, when it got published as a LN in 2011 it caused the first wave on narou in 2011-2012. Then it caused the second wave in 2013+ when Log Horizon's anime was announced and aired.
The reason SAO is falsely credited is because the Log Horizon LN started close to the time when SAO's anime started. Also both Dengeki Bunko and Enterbrain are properties of Kadokawa subsidiaries while Kadokawa was known to invest into isekai the most.

It kinda depends. If for example the world was set like 1 million years later or earlier, when the climate and the creatures and the available resources are so utterly different, then it really might just be isekai.
But if it's only 50 or 100 years later, or perhaps even 1000 years, and civilization that descended from current civilization still is around, no matter how degraded it would be, then no.
Ideally, the less ruins from our era are around, the better.

Your retarded logic aside, MT's LN is vastly superior to the WN in every aspect. There is basically no reason to read the WN if you can either buy the LN or simply watch the anime. No clue what sort of crack you're smoking to imply that WN holds just as well.
Nowadays any person that gets into it (or even Slime) through the anime won't go to fucking Narou of all places to read it and will instead buy the physical book with plenty of extra content and beautiful illustrations that also has an ending now since MT's webnovel ended 11 years ago.

For me SAO's influence seems more along the lines of legitimizing/popularizing web novels, at a time where isekai was already a popular trend. As much as people talk about SAO's influence on the genre, there's very few series you could call an SAO clone. There's an obvious formula to modern isekai and SAO has very little in common with any of it.

Kuro no Maou actually debuted on Narou several months before Mushoku Tensei did, making it older than Mushoku Tensei

Kuro no Maou Chapter 1 first debuted on May 14, 2011 and Kuro no Maou was already on Chapter 298 before Mushoku Tensei Chapter 1 first appeared on Narou on November 22, 2012

In other words, 298 chapters of Kuro no Maou content was available to read on Narou before Mushoku Tensei even existed on Narou.

Why do Mushoku Tensei fags love spreading the lie that their work is the father or grandfather of isekai when works like Kuro no Maou exist?

You Mushoku Tensei newfags think nobody will ever bother going to the Narou website in order to discover the bullshit lies you love spreading?

Taketori Monogatari, or "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," is a story dating back to the 10th century, making it over a thousand years old.
Taketori Monogatari is the oldest surviving Japanese work of fiction.

It's about a girl who goes to a world different from her own. Princess Kaguya leaves her world (the Moon), arrives on Earth, and lives among humans. She has adventures, meets several suitors, and then returns to her world after making many friends, gaining a family, and becoming a princess in the new world she visited.
Basically, the first known work of Japanese fiction is an isekai, and a reverse isekai, at that.
>>
I don't get what's even the point of looking for "the grandfather of Isekai" when this trope is ancient and ubiquitous around the world. It's just a convenient plot device that lets you write the protagonist who knows nothing just like the reader, while also isolating him from the rest of the world (so you don't have to worry about his past and family).
But in the modern era, isekai became so popular because it provides a rationale for the adventures to come. It is obvious that to have a fantastic adventure, a person from the real world needs to fall out of the ordinary routine and leave the homeland. A folklore hero could meet an elf in the forest. The hero of a Greek epic had to sail to the other side of the sea. Adventurers of the Renaissance had their adventures on another continent or lost in unknown seas. An explorer of the early 20th century could still hope to find a lost island or something. The hero of early science fiction could to fly to inhabited but unexplored worlds. But all of that is passe now. The modern world has been so studied and measured that the author no longer hopes to reach unknown lands by any known means, and therefore throws his hero somewhere and somehow, don't think too hard about it. That's why isekai became so ubiquitous.

A brief addendum to this: the videogame tropes (DQ homages specifically) were present in early pre-Narou isekai. Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru was an incredibly popular pre-Narou isekai, and was a huge send-up to RPGs of the 80s. It's also most likely the reason mecha ended up in 90s exemplars like Escaflowne and (especially) Rayearth.

Naroufags brought the DQ references back as outright story pillars either out of homage, intellectual laziness, or both.

>SAO's influence seems more along the lines of legitimizing/popularizing web novels
Is there anything indicating that that is the case? It seems more like people insist on it solely because SAO used to have a self-published WN and happened to become popular. That's it, that's literally all of the "evidence" for it. No author's ever citing SAO as their inspiration, no nothing. And like you already correctly pointed out (as one of the very few who did) SAO's contents did not get used as an inspiration either, since it's closer to 2000s battle-harems-with-predecided-one-sole-winner-with-the-rest-being-loser-orbiters and the whole survival/battle-royale thing that also was popular in the 2000s. But nothing indicating of isekai, not even the "game elements" aspect which is usually credited to IRL /v/idya or /tg/ such as Dragon Quest, Ultima, D&D (version with pig orcs), etc. by isekai authors.

ZnT was one of the pillars of unreasonable abusive kugiRie tsundere. Isekai completely and utterly killed this notion off, leaving only some milder tsundere behind.
Like, seriously, after isekai the whole violent tsundere aspect just got completely and utterly killed off. When I rewatch 2000s anime I see those tsundere, but they are nowhere to be seen in isekai. If ZnT really was that significant origin of isekai then don't you think they'd have kept that? Or do you think that 99% of the ZnT fanbase secretly hated this aspect all this time?
