Why did tournament arcs disappear from battle shonen? They used to be a staple of the genre and be a place for side characters to show off, but modern ones don't do this and instead throw everyone into a big "war" or battle royale arc where they fight jobbers.
It's because of credit card companies.
Audiences don't like them anymore, so editors discourage them.
A tournament means someone's favorite character has to lose, so now everyone gets a participation trophy or part win
People complained about them so they stopped.
It's because we live in a society. It can't be helped.
>>290846146>modern onesThat would be why. Because there are no "modern" battle shonens left. >>290846732Why the fuck are you even reading battle shonen if you don't like fights
>>290846146If I have to guess, it's likely because there are less manga with the typical battle shonen structure Dragon Ball popularized, most of them are exorcist/demon hunter stuff and it's harder to come with a tournament arc with those.
>>290846464Dandadan is a romcom

>>290846805It's a battle shonen with romcom window dressing
>>290846146>Why did tournament arcs disappear from battle shonen?
>>290846146Tournament arcs are consistently the worst part of a shonen series, so perhaps it isn't surprising to see them go. Once some series stopped including them and had actually decent episodes for most of their runtime, it's not surprising that the shows which insisted on running 10-20 episode tournaments started dropping off.
>>290848187Ah yes, I'm glad tournament arcs were dropped so that we can have a billion useless characters that do absolutely nothing instead
>>290846146You can fuck right off pretending anyone liked tournament arcs. What's next? Complaining that fillers are dead too?
>>290849610Tournament arcs were better than the villains having a million henchmen that only exist to give the side characters something to do
>>290846146>why did [thing] disappear >posts examples from recently completed series
I can't actually believe that we are having an actual quality thread were we talk about the genre of the board and not some random cgdct shit.Where were you /a/?
>>290846146Tournament arcs are good for introducing characters and fleshing them out. But they slow down the plot. I think modern writers prefer to jump right into the meat of the series rather than drag things out.
>>290846146Because it's shit especially after a hundred of iterations
>>290846146Anime pitch:Tournament TournamentA rag tag team of battle tournaments face each other one final elimination tournament, where only one can survive
>>290851601How many times something has been done has never mattered.
>>290851706Learn what a “cliché” is, retard. It absolutely does matter. People get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
>>290851750What matters is execution. People don't give a fuck how many times something has been done, they care how well it's done
>>290851872And the later executions were just mostly copying earlier ones
>>290846146Because tournament arcs slow a manga or anime plot to a crawl. Every now and again you get a good one that finds a way to keep a decent pace, but most go on for way longer than anyone cares for. Characters also end up pretty stationary and undeveloped once relegated to the audience seats while only one or two are battling.
>>290846146Because they fucking suck.>dozens of chapters of irrelevant shitter #239048 vs irrelevant shitter #968453>last fight of the first round is mc vs. his rival or some other long-awaited matchup>oh gee i wonder if this tournament will be interrupted by villains!
>>290852323And how does them fighting the villain's irrelevant fodder henchmen *not* slow the plot to a crawl?
>>290852385That's the point, to let the irrelevant shitters do something since there's no room for them in the actual plot
>>290846146Like some have said, tournament arcs can be fun, but if handled badly it can get boring soon and slow down the story for years, and they also need to have a strong reason to happen, Fairy Tail's tournament arc for example felt like a tournament for the sake of one, nothing about the Grand Magic Games was mentioned until it was convenient for Fairy Tail to regain their status as the strongest guild of the country, and as such it looks out of place in the plot.
>>290846146>>290852323>>290852385Anyone complaining about tournament arcs needs to admit that war arcs have a far worse batting average. I can think of plenty of good tournament arcs even if we stick purely to battle shonen - all three of the Budokai Tenkaichi, the Dark Tournament, the Chunin Exams, etc - but I can only think of one War Arc I thought was pretty good, Marineford. Tournaments tend to give a pretty good idea of how long they'll be, whereas War Arcs can drag on seemingly forever. Tournaments systematically eliminate shitters and the guys who persevere - the Joey Wheelers of the world - actually look impressive doing it, whereas a War Arc is usually a big participation trophy for all the useless D-tiers the author can cram in for gulp shitto points.
>>290852389Because in that case they’re fighting to accomplish some goal that advances the plot. But a tournament is just fighting for the sake of fighting.
>>290852871Should we start calling you war arc schizo because of how many times Ive seen this exact same complaint?
>>290852871>I don’t like war arcs, therefore tournament arcs are good!!!Uhhh, no anon that’s not how that works.
>>290852987Tournaments frequently are in the service of a goal that's not just fighting. >>290853028>>290853116It's more like this - the same complaints aimed at tournament arcs can be aimed at war arcs, yet tournament arcs have started to become less popular and war arcs are still around. So it can't be those specific complaints because they're all present in a more popular arc structure that if anything suffers even worse from themI think the real issue is that tournaments are pretty restrictive, once you've committed to them you're locked in (even interrupted tournaments usually happen just before the final). War arcs are a bit more malleable though that's also why I don't like them, because they don't trim the fat as efficiently as a tournament arc so they become more directionless.
>>290846146The one in bnha was pretty fucking dumb tho, anon.
>>290853300(Also an addendum - Tournament arcs are a very natural way to give you hero Vs hero matchups that would otherwise not occur. Goku Vs Krillin is not going to happen in the normal story structure, but their fight in the 22nd BT is an iconic moment in their friendship.)
They didn’t fully disappear, but pure/traditional tournament arcs became much rarer in flagship battle shonen because the genre’s priorities, pacing expectations, and thematic interests shifted. Classic ones (Dragon Ball’s World Martial Arts Tournaments, Yu Yu Hakusho’s Dark Tournament, Naruto’s Chunin Exams, Hunter x Hunter’s Heaven’s Arena, My Hero Academia’s Sports Festival) thrived as structured, relatively controlled showcases. Modern series lean harder into chaotic, high-stakes "everyone is fighting for real" formats: wars, invasions, culling games, battle royales, where side characters still get moments but often against disposable threats or in ensemble chaos.
Modern day manga readers hate this fantasy because it’s impossible for them to self insert as someone superior to their peers.
>>290853386You are a modern day manga reader and something tells me you don't have a problem with that.
>>290846146You can't fit a tournament arc in every setting.
>>290853452>implying
>>290853317Oh, yeah, the UA Sports Festival shit.>An obstacle-course race (mobility, endurance, and creative quirk use).>A cavalry battle (team-based point-stealing with headbands).>A single-elimination 1v1 tournament bracket.Hero work in the hero academia world is supposed to include rescue, support, investigation, crowd control, logistics, and non-combat utility. The Sports Festival, however, is structured and judged almost entirely around competitive fighting and physical dominance:>The final tournament is pure 1v1 combat in a ring.>Even the earlier stages reward aggressive, destructive, or high-speed abilities more than careful or specialized ones.>Characters with quirks better suited to support, analysis, or non-direct confrontation (or simply less "flashy") are at a clear disadvantage for scouting and ranking purposes.>Pro heroes are watching specifically to scout future talent, so the format effectively tells the industry (and the audience) that "strong in a fight = better hero prospect."
>>290846146Grand Magic Games will never be surpassed. What a fucking time to be reading.
>>290853532>Characters with quirks better suited to support, analysis, or non-direct confrontationshould be sidekicks or something
>>290853562the final tournament should have been with teams, but that would have been a pain in the ass to write for a hack
Maybe One Punch Man killed it. Other than manga that are nothing but battle tournaments like Records of Ragnarok, I think everything else shounen that has tried since that time has had a pretty rough time of it.
>>290853532That footrace was won by someone who wasn't even using his quirk. The issue with MHA is that until you hit the very top level quirks are borderline useless and you can just become someone superhuman by training
>>290846464Dressrosa counts as a tournament arc
>>290846820There are 6 battle shonen (and other hybrids) other than those right now in WSJ alone.
>>290853532That could have worked as a symptom of treating heroism like a spectacle and criticized like the popularity rankings and paparazzi lifestyle of pro heroes but it never is.
>>290846146I don't get it, your picture shows that multiple modern shonen like Boku no Hero and Dragon Ball Super still get tournament arcs
>>290852389It comes down to it basic concepts. A war arc conceptually gives the reader the illusion of progression and a sense of tension that things can get crazy if done well. Tournament arcs on the other hand rely on restricting the characters to a set course of actions that you now have to play out in very specific ways according to whatever rules have been put in place. If done well it's a great way to play around with matchups and power systems. If not than you risk readers getting bored waiting for the 100th cutaway to the friend audience expositioning the MC's friendly rival's new power up after an extended flashback is done to get to the good stuff. It also by name association alone tells the reader "We're just messing around for a bit, don't expect anything but aura-farming for a year."
>>290851538Where were YOU? OP is a schizo who constantly makes these threads sperging over shounen cast bloat and "war arcs". You could replace him with a bot and no one would notice a difference.
