Episode 12 roughly goes like this:Mari arrives on Okishima and encounters the anglerfish that is about to disappear, with Lisa standing nearby, unable to do anything.Lisa gives Mari a long lecture, but she doesn’t stop her from going to Lara.Mari eventually reaches Lara, who is in her mermaid form — and she looks absolutely gorgeous!Lara tells Mari not to come any closer because she might accidentally kill her.Lara then intends to use the fish sword to kill herself and break the mermaid curse, because she doesn’t want to kill Mari.“There can be no ending for a mermaid and a human!”But Mari doesn’t care and tells Lara:“You were born to love, weren’t you?”At that moment, the fish sword pierces through Mari and swallows an orb that seems to contain Mari’s soul.Lara breaks down crying over Mari’s death. She starts smashing the fish sword and destroys half of it.Then the fish sword opens its huge mouth and swallows Lara as well.Inside the fish sword, Lara searches for Mari, but the inside is filled with spikes that surround and trap her.Her memories with Mari begin flashing before her again, and her “princess power” starts shining. She breaks all of the spikes.Lara rushes toward Mari with all her strength and grabs her in an embrace.Then the fish sword explodes, sending the two of them flying into the air, and they are saved.Six months later, Lara says goodbye to Lisa and receives her mother’s ring from her.In the end, Lara says that she wants to live on her own, so she leaves the Amatsu household.Lara and Mari go to the station together. Lara gets on the train, and Mari runs after the train for a while.The final shot shows Mari’s profile.And that’s the end of the series.Yes, that’s right. The title Sayonara Lara literally means that they really do say goodbye.

The only thing I’ll say is that the spoilers make it feel like you could jump straight to episode 12 now without learning anything about what happens in 11, which is suspicious.Episode 11 should give us context as to what Mari needs to do, but it doesn’t seem like anything in Mari’s plan actually changes based on how it’s described in the finale.
