Every single time someone on this board recommends a "deep" or "mind-bending" anime, it's literally just Lain, Ergo Proxy, or Evangelion. It's hilarious how shallow the collective memory here actually is. Zero directors after 2000 had the guts to drop an audience into a completely nonsensical world with zero hand-holding and actual artistic direction. As a matter of fact most of the people here are nothing but zoomers who can't name any other work other than the usual names like ergo proxy or lain.
>>290958937Insanely ironic to choose Angel's Egg as the thread image.
>>290958937experimental anime is alive and more common than ever, even more so outside the industryAngel's Egg is more casual than Ergo Proxy and even more well known, it literally played on cinemas all over the US a few months agolurk more newfag
>>290958937Yuusha no Rokkotsu was far more experimental than any of that slop and came out last season.
>>290959127I just realized Yuusha no Rokkotsu is not the same as Rokka no Yuusha
I think Japan is just like:>Sure, we'll make them like they used to, at the cost of two things now: Patience and the overall length of the final product.
>>290958937I prefer more recent sci-fi over Lain and Ergo Proxy which have not aged well in their ideas. I will not list them.
>>290958937Why do you imagine experimental anime was somehow popular with mainstream audiences at any time?
>>290958937>Experimental animepost 13 and 3/4 examples
>>290958937They're hit or miss. I didn't like Lain while I liked Ergo Proxy. Do we consider Kuuchuu Buranko deep? Because I liked that too.
>>290958937Just make an indie anime with what you want?
>>290959073came here to say this, the entire subtext gets loredumped in a monologe near the end of the story lmao
>>290958937I dunno. Like, it explains a lot, but I think the fact that Sonny Boy was so well-received shows that there's interest that can be cultivated, even though it's not there right now.
>>290958937Experimental and deep are not synonyms. Anime as a whole is dead though and yes this board is mostly entry level.
>>290958937Texhnolyze literally begins with stream of conscious nonsense about a guy falling down stairs which tells you next to nothing about anything.
>>290958937The last time I failed to comprehend what I was watching was Needy Girl Overdose last season
>>290958937Why do burgers hate narration? Character monologue and director commentary are core elements in every medium. Even abstract paintings at the museum will have cards explain what they meant next to them. To not use all narrative tools available to you to communicate your message is dumb, not artsy. I do love the implication nonsensical and deep are the same, really shows the level of intelectual discussion we can expect here. Either way, the reason the same "deep" shows get recommended all the time is because normalfags don't really care about experimental animation or complex storytelling. They just want something safe and frictionless that grants them access to the in-group. Haruhi is more experimental than Angel's Egg but you can't pretend to be an intelectual by posting about a colorful harem LN adaptation the same you can with a spooky loli peeing in the river.
>>290963775As a fan of the game I planned to second monitor this show while I was raiding, after 2 episodes I was so fucking lost sue to how surreal it was, I need to go back and sit down to watch it at some point
>>290964407NTA but I consider animation a form of art and that as such it should speak to my soul; as corny as that may sound. That's why I don't like modern abstract. It resonates as the product of a perverted sicko with a way with words to bs himself out of being creative. The old 'experimental' anime I've watched were mostly adult oriented non echi products, and those are rare in the industry. The only ones to come to mind this season are the smoking cats show and the smoking supermarket hole show. I will check out Haruhi, because I'm always on the look out for good exp recs from fellow anons. Would you consider 'Otaku no video' or 'Girl's last tour' experimental? The former has these eerie faux documentary clips and the latter feels uniquely dreamlike all the way trough.
Walpurgisnacht is experimental, you'd need 3 watches to understand it
>>290965130Haruhi isn't experimental at all, the director is just a pseud faggot who thought 8 of the same episode was more important than 7 more episodes adapted from the novel.
>>290959127>isekaiShame. At least it sounds like it tried to do something genuinely unique with the setting.
>>290963098>Do we consider Kuuchuu Buranko deep? Most anons don't seem to even remember it. Hell, Mononoke seems forgotten also.
>>290965130>the product of a perverted sicko with a way with words to bs himselfIs what all good art is. It is up to you if something "speaks to your soul" or not. It is fine if corporate, safe for work products are what resonates with you but that really has nothing to do with the quality of the piece or their creator.
>>290958937boku no pico
>>290958937>>>/wsr/
>>290959073OP literally thinks that no dialogue = deep.
>>290963568>stream of consciousnessthere is no fucking narration and almost no internal monologue wtf are you talking about
>>290963098>Do we consider Kuuchuu Buranko deep?Somewhat experimental maybe, but I don't know about "deep" in the sense that OP clearly means. That's the issue with these kinds of descriptions. Anyway you're not going to get a truly experimental anime made in the 12-episode traditional anime studio system. It's like expecting a Christopher Nolan film to be avant garde, or Imagine Dragons to release a krautrock album.
>>290967542>>Anyway you're not going to get a truly experimental anime made in the 12-episode traditional anime studio systemPopteppic. Maybe Gyaru to Kyouryuu. That live broadcast mocapped idol show. Straight Title Robot Anime.
>>290967856Aoi Shouta's stuff is definitely out there but I'd say it's more surrealist/Dadaist than experimental as OP means it, in the same way I wouldn't call something like Smiling Friends or Midnight Gospel experimental.
>>290968079>experimental as OP means itIf OP isn't going to use the conventional definition of words or at least provide the one he is using then he can't expect much help.
>>290968353He's presumably conflating experimental as a whole with purely avant-garde or non-narrative works. For more film comparisons it's like Eisenstein versus Vertov. However, OP is clearly stupid and this is a stealth rec thread so there's not much point in us trying to work out his opinions for him.
>>290967542>but I don't know about "deep" in the sense that OP clearly meansI think guys like OP would like it if it had been made in 1989 and not 2009.
