This battle against the hydra is absolutely brilliant. I think it's the best portrayal of party-based RPG combat outside of video games, full stop. The way every character weaves and moves around, supporting each other in unique ways like a dance troupe, is great. The second season of Mushoku is such a weird experience. Going from season 1, the story suddenly switches to Limp Dick Academy for 12 episodes, dropping any pretense of having a plot and focusing entirely on SoL comedy (with a couple of nice moments). It wasn't a complete waste of time, but you could probably cut it in half without losing much of anything.But then the second half rolls around, and it picks up exactly where season 1 left off. The animation is superb again; the character work is superb again; everything is exactly how it was. Roxy comes back, and I fucking adore Roxy, so I'm glad they did her justice. It's all incredibly solid. But man, what the hell was that first half? No idea.Still, Rudeus' character is the highlight of the entire story. Caught up on Mushoku Tensei.I can easily see why everyone says this shit is the best. It's glorious. Watching it was just as intense as watching Re:Zero, at times even more so. I couldn't even tell which one is better - while Re:Zero has a much tighter plot structure where the ride never stops, Mushoku has far better, more mature character writing. The romance in Mushoku is leagues and bounds more interesting than whatever we get in Re:Zero. The cast has far more chemistry. Worldbuilding feels seriously impressive; you'd think Rifujin was actually trying to stand alongside Tolkien and Martin with how much attention and detail he put into his world. It's leaps and bounds more ambitious than almost any fantasy I've seen coming from Japan, with only a few exceptions.I can gush about Rudeus and how this is the best use of reincarnation as a plot device possible, but that'll be an entire wall of text.And the animation is so good.
