Is Hiroshi Hamasaki one of the best anime directors? It feels like very few people know about him despite working on multiple big classics.
>>291112858Better than Shinkai at least
>>291112858>multiple big classicsAre you referring to anything else besides what's in the pic?
>>291112858Deserves the You Tried award, which is more than most, but he sucks.
>>291113089He directed an episode of SnK, lol
>>291112858I don't find the lethargic directing in those anime to be anything that special. He's not a Miyazaki or Kon.
>>291113203But he's very underrated compared to those directors relative to the quality of his output. He really should be better known than he is.
>>291112858You know anime is made by more than the director, right? It's not a one man project.>>291113241He didn't write either of the ones you posted. He also directed Terra Formars, Shigurui and Blade of the Immortal, which were all severely mediocre adaptations.Oh yeah, he also directed the Iron Man anime I guess?
>>291112858Been a long time since I've seen S;G but I rewatch Texhnolyze regularly and yeah it's pretty well-directed. People complain that it's slow (they're retarded) but it's in CONSTANT motion. It's just eminently watchable. Another great director who I've been thinking about lately is Sakurai Hiroaki, who directed most of the Di Gi Charat series, Cromartie High School, and Saiki K, which is a pretty bit triple whammy of great comedy series. I need to see more stuff by him.
>>291112858Just 2 big anime, and between those only Texh is good.
>>291113274Dumb criticism. Every creator has flops, you judge them based on their best works.
>>291112882That's a low fucking bar
>>291113622>everyone's a fucking retard in itI mean this kind of describes S;G too, though it doesn't have the big depression angle.
>>291112858He seems alright. But 2 medium-small hits isn't much for a director.
>>291113107Yeah, I've never drop a show after watching the 1st episode until I watched Texhnolyze.
>>291113842SG suffers from having an idiot plot required to set up the story, though Okabe's hijinks are enough to entertain most anime watchers.
>>291112858He's underrated I guess, never even heard of him.
>>291113622Literally too stupid to see the point of the story: the postThe entire story is about how being tied to an idea about destiny is foolish. Ran sees "the future" in the same way Laplace's demon does, through being perfectly connected to the present. But she doesn't do nearly all that she could have to prevent it. Ichise makes almost no decisions for himself, simply letting others tell him what to do and decide shit for him. He slept with the woman who wanted to poke his eye out because she wanted to. He got his limbs removed (obviously) against his will. He gets new ones put on against his will. He joins the Organo because... it's the obvious thing to do. This idea of doing what others want, resigning yourself to fate, not making your own decisions, permeates every single aspect of the story. Why does Yoshii hate the surface world? Because it has become a world of routine people, people with no passion, no interest. He comes down to Lukuss to SHAKE THINGS UP to PREVENT it from becoming like the surface. I'm sure I could write up a much better essay about it if I rewatched the show again and channeled some college English, but I haven't got the time. Either way, acting like it has "no lesson" is such a clear showing of your own lack of understanding.
>>291114313I didn't even like Okabe so the show didn't have much in the way of positive qualities to me.
>>291112858His directing style in those shows is so boring. I'm not surprised nobody knows him.
>>291112858>Kurisu's animeHe's the greatest of all time.
>>291115744He didn't design the characters or write them you know.
>>291113203>muh Miyazaki or Konyour not 13 any more
>>291112882Not even, Your Name did Steins;Gate's ending better.
>>291112858
>>291115877So what? He directed them.
>>291114669He's hit or miss. But he's also the main draw of the story, besides him there isn't anything special or notable about most of Steins;Gate.
>>291112858>the best anime directorsThat's a pretty competitive list you know.
>>291112858Is that all he made?
>>291114669Subaru was also an ass but at least he was more interesting to watch for me.
>>291112858Texhnolyze was cool at least. Doesn't look like he made anything else that I like.
>>291114045>When Ruka became a female it was a more interesting momentInteresting? I guess so. It was still a pretty bad and poorly written arc imo.
>>291112858Why did you post two garbage shows though? What else did he do?
Okabe is one of the best protagonists of all time.
>>291118379He's pretty good
>>291118379He's genuinely far more one dimensional than people take him for. His only personality trait is chuuni, even Megumin is a better character.
>>291118877>MegumemeLaughable opinion, she's a waifu from isekai slop, nothing more.
>>291112858Both of these are genuinely some of the worst paced anime outside of 100+ episode shounenshit
>>291113953SG is a big hit, not medium-small.
>>291112858>classicsI don't see any classics in that picture.
Texh has a well earned cult classic status but it doesn't surprise me that this guy is unknown if those are his most popular anime
>>291112858I'll get around to texnolyze one day
>>291112858S;G is slop. Texh is good but nobody knows about it.
>>291115744Mayuri is best girl tho
>>291112858I don't know if it's his fault or not but those anime were boring as hell
>>291115345Yeah that's what I was saying. People really think this guy is underrated when S;G is famous for having 12 episodes of hardly anything interesting happening?
>>291112858He's peak
>>291114313>SG suffers from having an idiot plotThis, the moron actually had to jumpstart the plot by giving one of the villains the time machine, otherwise the plot doesn't even happen.
>>291114027I thought Texhnolyze was okay but I could not get through the first episode of Steins;Gate. I can't even believe it's possible to write such a boring first episode.
>>291122569That's true but keep in mind this is the director you're talking about. He's not in charge of any of the writing decisions.
>>291115918He quite literally is, anon. Thats why he finds the slow and methodic directing of Texhnolyze ''lethargic''. Lethargic is a new meme word the kids use to sound like adults, you'll start seeing it around a lot more often.
>>291112858How many people outside of 4chan know about texhnolyze? Like 20?
>>291122627I guess? At the least then he could've made the series more interesting instead of a pacing nightmare.
>>291122701Most people who consider chinese cartoons as their hobby and are +18 yo know about it. Most haven't seen it.
>>291112858He seems decent tier. Not the best.
>>291115918Meh, Studio Ghibli's output btfos the two shows OP posted. I don't need to justify anything.
>>291112858>multiple big classicsI know 2 is technically multiple but come on OP.
>>291122627I guess he did the best he could out of a mid script then
>>291122701Good, glad to know nobody else has to suffer with watching all that shit.
>>291118379Not even better than Rudeus
>>291112858>Reddit;Gate>best anime director
El psy congroo
Texhnolyze has a bunch of genuinely terrible, laughable directing. Which has nothing to do with being slow. It's poorly made.
>>291112858With that kind of output it's probably for the best that he's forgotten.
>>291112858So the worst ironic weeb shit around, and an anime you only ever see in 3x3 threads. Woooooow.
>>291112858S;G had an awful first episode
>>291113203I mean neither of those come even close to Nausicaa or Perfect Blue, yeah. He just seems like an average director to me, not exceptional.
>>291118379Watch more than 5 anime.
>>291124824It's not just the first episode that was awful...
His style is definitely more of a slow paced kind of anime
>>291113107TPBP, haven't seen anything remarkable at all from what he's made.
>>291125401I dropped s;g after 4 episodes. Everything I've heard about the show tells me that I made the right decision.
>>291113390This
>>291112858One of the best might be exaggerating. He's fine.
>>291125401>>291126065I stuck out with the whole anime and only the last couple episodes were enjoyable. All of the rest was just maid cafes and dating routes with a thriller coat of paint.
>>291112858>time travel for retardsNo thanks fag
Hamasaki's directing is a personal favorite of mine. The recent Mugen no Juunin adaptation was cut and truncated to shit but it was still really nice to watch because of the scene by scene direction.
>>291112858I wasn't impressed with either of those anime, directing and otherwise.
>>291112858>reddit and pseudNice filmography, lol
bro's name is hiroshima nagasaki :skull:
>>291122617Better boring than a complete nonsense episode. Anyone/everyone can skip the first episode of Texhnolyze and still end up with the same story/experience. Anyone who's seen the first episode of Texhnolyze knows this for a fact. Because the entire episode exists only to waste your time.
EL
>>291112858Neither of those anime have particularly good directing.
>>291134123This. Steins;Gate first half is famously boring. A good director could have done much better to make the story flow well.
>>291134843Can't fix the MC being a massive faggot though
>>291112858Satoshi Kon's works mog.
>>291131747>Better boring than a complete nonsense episode. The greatest sin a piece of media can commit is being boring.
>>291136074This, anyone who thinks the directing in OP's shows is one the level of something like perfect blue or cowboy bebop are memeing.
>>291113152Was it pre- or post-basement? This is important.
>>291136471>>291136074who doesnt he mog
>>291112858Texhnolyze has my favorite first episode ever. It blew my mind how good it was.
>>291137678post basement so it's garbage just like the rest of the shit this director did.
>>291112858I see one cult show and one reddit-core slop. Not the greatest record.
>>291130668kek
>>291112858He helped create Steins;Gate so that makes him overrated.
>>291125601Yeah, very slow paced indeed.
>>291122326Mayuri sex
>>291112858This guy's work doesn't come close to any of the best anime directors.
>>291113390>Texh>big anime
>>291112858He does a decent job with atmosphere, which counts for something. That's probably his biggest strength.
>>291112858Texhnolyze is the only decent thing he worked on.
>>291118379>annoying twit>best protagonist of all timeGet taste retard.
Honestly I'm starting to assume people that can't appreciate S;G at all/ call it outright bad are very very underage. I mean that unironically. They're the type of underage that are so incredibly young that they can't appreciate the value of ordinary happiness(one of S;G top core themes)
>>291112858He is truly one of the hacks of all time.
>>291145471Who cares about the themes when the story itself isn't well directed and arguably not well written either.
>>291145969All I'm saying is that those who hate it for the first half being "boring" haven't even turned 18 yet
>>291146029Even people who are fans of Steins;Gate say that the first half is boring. Now imagine watching all of that except you end up not enjoying the second half either. Does that give you some idea of the dissatisfaction I feel towards this show?
>>291146196>Even people who are fans of Steins;Gate say that the first half is boringFinding something boring does not automatically equal dissatisfaction though. I'm talking about the children who actually drop it before it gets plot heavy for that reason alone
>>291146280You can feel however you want about it, if you're a fan you're a fan. Personally I don't blame anyone for dropping that anime and it didn't really feel worth the journey.
>>291142894>>291142894>>291142894>>291142894
>>291112858Nobody with a working brain thinks this selection measures up to Ghibli or prime Tomino or any number of other influential directors.
>>291145471S;g is outright bad, yes.
>>291112858texh carries this picture so hard
>>291145225I swear only manchildren like Okabe or think he's some kind of great protagonist.
>>291112858The word multiple is doing a lot of work there
>>291112858Two mediocre sci-fi shows
>>291112858None of these are better than GitS in directing or writing.
>>291150660Yeah this director is just mid, I'm not surprised nobody knows him. There isn't anything notable directing-wise in S;G.
>>291112882I don't think any of the shit this guy seems to have made is better than Your Name.
