Does anybody else feel weeb imposter syndrome?
Like you've seen stuff that you know is niche by definition but the more you watch the less niche it feels.
>It got a DVD release in 2003 or something so how could it be niche?

You've only watched the top animes and read the most popular mangas of the 70s so of course you aren't really watching niche stuff but then you realize 70% of animanga public has no reason to go anywhere before 2018.
What is some animanga you wish to see to feel more informed about the medium?
>>
If you don't learn Japanese you will always be a secondary to weebs.
To the Japanese themselves, you will ALWAYS be a secondary tourist regardless of what you do.

>>
>>291141839
high levels of self awareness is detrimental to the success of the individual, but i digress. You're just throwing random non-insults at me. If you thought about it for 3 seconds, liking product of society but disliking the society where it came from is common. Indian food, russian military equipment, hollywood movies.
>>
>>291141869
Its also that these people are in an identity crisis. They have mostly nothing going on in their lives and no real personality so they define themselves by what they consume and its sickening because they themselves become kind of a passive subject of their own identity: i.e. "since im a weeb i gotta watch what the other weebs are watching". They dont really like anime they just want to fit in. If you recommend something truly niche and unpopular they'll just laugh at you. They have no interest in anime beyond the social aspect they can extract from it.

These are mostly the same kind of people that love to go on an on about the evils of capitalism and they dont really notice their entire identity is a product thats sold to them.

Tbh I am afraid that I am falling in this trap. >>
>>291142026
It's not that I'm against fandoms really but stuff like anime, manga, movies, comics etc, this kind of consumption based hobby is, for all intents, done solo. At best it's something we do by ourselves in parallel, but it is still a solo activity. We can discuss what we watched but the act of watching it should be the draw. Fandoms existed because we shared an interest, now it feels like the interest exists for the sake of a fandom.

It's weird looking at it through the eyes of an older fag. People of my era are used to there not even really being much of an online to discuss on in the first place. Yeah you had old internet discussion groups but those were very much not the same. Though the more things change the more they sometimes stay the same.

>You don't have weeb imposter syndrome, you are a genuine tourist.
OP here, I thought this thread would be dead by now.
Is just, I don't want to say stupid uninformed shit when asked questions. I'm kinda obsessed since I was a teen to know a lot about something. From subcultures to lolcows to anime.

For example, where did the overused "Sad backstory as introduction" cliche started in shonen?
I'd say that in Tetsuwan Atom since is the beginning of the plot but it was very utilitarian in it's use. So probably Dororo is the earliest strongest example of a shonen where the sad backstory drives the plot.
But most Nekketsu Shonen didn't took that route as up to the late 80s and even mid 90s many manga protagonists were still introduced as already very strong and skilled and most sad backstories served the same utilitarian purpose as in Tetsuwan Atom, some had to learn they weren't the hot shit they thought at the beginning like Sakuragi Hanamichi but most stress came after the introduction and as an outside force.
Then in 1995 you get the triple whammy of Rurouni Kenshin, Evangelion and Gold Experience.

But that only applies if you are ignorant about the influence of Shoujo in Shonen which used that much earlier as well as World Masterpiece Theater.

So you need to look more and more content to know more context to fully grasp what you're watching even if it's as vapid as "Sad backstory cliche in shonenshit".
>>

>It's weird looking at it through the eyes of an older fag.

Frankly I don't know how we reach this, I think i framed it incorrectly in the OP.

What I meant to say was that no matter how niche I find a new series I realize it never truly was but it also feels strange because it absolutely is for most people and I feel sad, I would feel sad if I were them.

Normalfags are also not averse to older anime, provided they are exposed to it in the proper setting and by people they trust. If you really want to remedy this set up a Youtube or Tiktok, or maybe start local screenings of older stuff in your area.

I like some niche things like Karas and Vatican Miracle Examiners

You're reading some kind of paternalistic/sick intent that isn't there in the post. You yourself were exposed to anime within the setting of /a/, and you likely trust the recommendations of anons over so-called "normalfags". Sure, not everyone stakes their whole media consumption habits on anime (and they likely have other things going on in their lives), but what can you do?

To normalfags K-on is more popular than Hellsing and most of Gundam.

Hellsing Abridged is what most faggots are familiar with, as much as it butchers the original. I don't really think most people know about K-On besides recognizing the girls. For Gundam, I'm kind of just going based on how everything else seems to reference it and the sales of merch. This entire conversation isn't my point anyway

real otaku in japan don't into things that feels "otaku like" they just read and watch whatever they like usually stuff advertised to them on tv or just past works they find interesting at video stores (online too) but those who are in it for identity run after what they consider "otakucore" a bunch of aesthetic addicts. That's how you get a ton of people claiming to like a certain anime or manga but when you talk to them about it or when they measure it up with how they LOVE to represent themselves as "otakucore" it becomes apparent they're were in it for identity masquerading
>>
>>291145785
It feels harder to avoid. You kind of have to go out of the way to NOT interact with the greater audience if you're looking for things at all. Even the act of trying to find a picture or a wallpaper runs too much risk of engagement.

According to Japan apparently real otaku, those old school guys, are extinct and or nearly extinct. Even in Japan, or should I say especially in Japan the Nu otaku who do it for at least partial identity reasons if not fully for identity reasons are super prevalent. Those who remember days seem to dislike old school otaku. Heck many old school otaku have become Nu otaku because they can socialize about anime out in the open.

I wish it were that easy. as someone who grew up with and being into nerd shit I can't help but find it a bit frustrating watching the new school audience flaunt their power levels but somehow still have a low one when it comes to actually understanding stuff. They'll proudly and loudly go on about the MCU but never read a comic, they don't know or refuse to watch any anime that's older than now. And it's not like I want to go up and say NAME FIVE IN BETWEEN ANIMATORS to catch them out anything like that but I can't help but feel like current audiences will just consume whatever you tell them too. They like what's popular because it's popular. Like look at Dungeons and Dragons. You have people playing watered down versions just because they saw it on popular show or online group plays. I dunno anymore. Maybe It is just sour grapes but watching what was once only really sanctuary collapse is frustrating.
>>

to add to this OP posts like this one >>291146427
reminded me of a youtuber who is obsessed with identity aesthetics or "otakucore". just like OP here he is obsessed about being perceived as knowledgeable to that extent that be made a anime con panel about DND and it's influence on anime high fantasy genre the catch here is that the guy NEVER play DND and DOESN'T even know how to play it. you see why i asked if you even watched andor read what you mention on that post. this is a direct effect of identity masquerading + youtube video essays it leads to disingenuous search of knowledge

>>
>>291149939
I don't know man, I just think it's cool knowing why things are the way they are. The context, the Zeitgeist, and that legitimately makes it more fun.
The more you watch the better but you don't have to watch everything to get a basic pattern recognition.
For example, I have a massive Leiji Matsumoto blindspot but when I watched Interestella 5555 for the first time you can tell the retro style being based specifically on late 70s, yet because of the specific type of blurriness and how it tackled the curves on Beryl's design you can pinpoint the actual production in late 2002 to mid 2004 but with a very 2003 feeling.
And that made watching it so much more interesting that if I had not known that.

Like the people who claimed the style of the new TGiTS anime was 90s styled when it clearly was 1987 to 1989, as most characters design changed to the 90s more common styles very early in the decade with Tenchi Muyo!, Nadia and Future GPX
