I feel like this chapter didn't have an ending 'hook'. I feel like that's not quite the right word, but it seems like it's just trying to explain the world outright.

There are a lot of interesting angles that could be explored here.I agree that it didn't feel quite as definitive and closed in it's own story as the last two chapters, but I still liked it.

They spoke about breaking down high energy materials and went on to consume nuclear warheads. The energy density there is ridiculously high... from a thermodynamics perspective it's frankly just kind of insane to blithely say that you're gonna eat some enriched radioisotopes and break them down for energy. To what fucking end, and by what mechanism? How are you gonna store billions of calories worth of energy in a more stable form? You would have to expand your mass by orders of magnitude. This chapter was cute, the girls were cute, I think it was obvious from the beginning that one of the chapters of Fragments of the Layered City would end up being about the Machine evolution study society, but to be completely honest I think so far I liked this chapter the least, the machines getting hobies instead of jobs does explain some of the later chaotic developments of the City, but it does feel like we only got to see a really tiny fragment here. I do like how the ending page ties into SSR though.I know there was someone keeping track of the camera dates in SSR, do we know when exactly the Machine evolution study society was around?Also I feel like with this chapter tkmiz didn't get the scale of the city quite right compared to how massive and detailed it felt in SSR pic related for comparison.
