While DM is among my favorite manga of all time, I can see why it's not as catchy early on. It also takes a while until it sinks in that there's an actual well constructed grand story in the making. I'm not judging here, just laying out why things may appeal to broader audiences early on, which factors into making it explode. Look at SxF, which has an awesome initial setup and premise, before it settles into meandering around with mostly holding patterns in terms of progression, but it was enough to let it coast into popularity. A strong initial impression counts for so much.Even in the DM manga, it only slowly creeps on you how things gradually but continuously get better in almost every way, especially in the second half. At least that's my rough thoughts about it. I still think the anime should have been bigger than it was, but I'm biased. Maybe it was timing, maybe marketing, who knows. But hey, it warranted the second season to cover the rest of the story and if Trigger doesn't fuck it up, we'll end up having a blast and a fucking great adaption of one of my favorite stories. If that happens, I can live with it not getting the accolades it (IMO) deserves.

Might also help that he is aware of how Succubi work and maybe even the fact that the Marcille Succ was a dead ringer for his Shapeshifter Marcille and that set off some alarms.
