It was mostly about having as many police characters appearing on screen as possible. Kazuha was in it but I don't think she did anything other than stand pretty under Sakura trees when Heiji showed up. Which was a good scene, but not 30th anniversary level inclusion. Well she wouldn't matter in this anyway because the next day they were starting the Heiji confession case that was also not worth 30 years. And then their next appearance over a year later is just Gosho pathetically padding like the sell out he is with a build up to them needing to tell Conan and Ran they were dating, who clearly knew already at the end of the confession case and Heiji and Kazuha knew they knew but "forgot" they both knew they knew, despite it ending on them walking straight towards Ran holding hands and Conan being the one to bring Kazuha there personally and standing there the whole time right beside Kazuha.

I found it better than recent movies, but that's not a very high bar.
The promo image is definitely a misleading advertising, I was riled up for some big, cool cooperation across Japan, but most of them were there just to be there. If you replaced them with randoms, the plot would still work the same. Not like it's much of a plot, you could probably squeeze it into half an hour episode if you cut out all the fanservice padding.

When watching it live, an hour in, I was already thinking it didn't even deserve to be an hour long let alone 2. And then after like an hour and 30 minutes or so they finally get to the dramatic action/emotional drama they teased in the trailer with Sonoko in a screaming crying fit just for it to last one minute and resolve the very next scene no problem whatsoever. And it was even worse because they chose to show everyone walking out fine after the explosion before showing Ran getting them out. Why pace it in the most underwhelming way possible if your serious moment only lasts two minutes to begin with? You took a lazy payoff and made it worse.

This was such a bad special that it's even scared off loyal quiet Japanese viewers from next year's anniversary movie. Though they're bound to go see it anyway even if the writing is 10x worse than this, because they've seen all the other recent movies anyway. It's depressing to think about all the wrong people being in charge of a movie as character important as one for Shinichi and Ran.

No matter how bad 30 ends up being, at least Ran's VA won't have to feel bad seeing them degrade her character for the hundredth time. I wish this shit ended before she died but they're never going to handle the character right again anyway.

She felt Ran was becoming too inhuman by movie 17 (as in, her action was becoming too ridiculous) and it's gotten way, way more retarded since then. The only time they do anything with Ran is when she's crying to look pathetic or needs to be sidelined or is treated as a generic muscle character with red aura surrounding her as she powers up and serpentines like a snake around culprits. The only thing of worth she did in the entire 2 hour anniversary was find a hatch and kick a closed shutter gate and it wasn't even built up to. They cut backwards to it afterwards. And then they just show her going towards the camera, they didn't even show her doing it. This is the best they could do for a main character in a big celebration in 2 hours.

The problem with Ran is that they still insist she is kept in the dark, yet the cast now counts many people that know Conan=Shinichi, or at least that Conan is genius, and they all know how to fight, making any potential involvement of Ran an unnecessary complication. I legit don't think Ran is a main character anymore. I think everyone started seeing her as a low tier supporting character. After hundreds of DB/Ai fillers you also started getting versions of the detective agency cases where she just kept being "away" or never mentioned at all and it looked really empty and lonely. Kogoro and Conan would go out on cases, go to these cool places, eat dinner together, and she was gone. They never fully ditched the normal fillers with Ran or anything but she's become more and more disposable to the point she seems tertiary even in normal scenarios.

Even Gosho can sideline her in stories she could do something, like the one where Kogoro is in danger and all Ran can do is just cry about ghosts. I like the girl but when I read that my mind immediately jumped, without being able to help it, to thinking "wow that's pathetic." It was an actual serious situation with Kogoro and Ran is just completely useless and stupid. To add insult to injury Gosho even had Kogoro attempt to text help to Ran only to accidentally send it to Conan instead, giving her more time to blubber and be useless instead of trying to actually save her dad.

Easiest guess is that Shinichi and Ran will be around for more Akai family drama. Like some epic complicated reunion in London and then ShinConan is seperated from Ran for most of it. Add in some flashbacks about dumb shit that totally happened during the original London arc and that'll be enough. Anyone still coping that it'll be a smaller cast focused directly on ShinRan haven't fucking learned their lesson and somehow believes they'd ever trust a big event movie to do gangbusters relying solely on Shinichi and Ran and none of the usual suspects.

It might not lead to anything, but I feel the need to point out that Aoko's mom is a prosecutor, which is rival to Eri as defense lawyer. The dynamic is kind of similar to Yusaku being detective, and Toichi being a thief.
Kogoro and Nakamori are both comedy relief, while Yukiko and Chikage are both legend-turned-housewife. Gosho really likes reusing ideas.
However, Aoko has been seen by Ran, Sonoko, Conan, and others, and no one made a connection between their looks, whereas Kaito's similarity to Shinichi has been pointed out by Ran in chapter 156, which came out all the way back in 1997.
Yusaku's opinion on Okita is yet to be heard.

So far, the teaser only included Shinichi and Ran, Gosho may have hinted at the Conan persona being at least heavily downplayed this movie, and recent artwork by Gosho focused on Shinichi and Ran. Things might easily change as we get closer to the movie but, so far, nothing is indicating M30 suffering from cast blot beyond the characters who are in all of the movies (Conan, Ran, Kogoro, Sonoko, Agasa, Haibara, and the Detective Boys).

The two worrying things are:

1. Movie can't do too much development as they're technically non-canon. Don't expect the Shinran relationship to be celarly advanced during the movie.
2. Characterization. Not sure if his wiring has improved since but Sakurai is the person who, in the tie-in episode to Movie 17 (his first ever movie), wrote Ran as beating Kogoro to an inch of his life simply because Kogoro was drunk and not taking a case of missing chocolate-flavored sweets seriously.

After looking into it wow, the anime team seems to favor Haibara over Ran. I find that pretty sad.

Finally back home.
The movie was really enjoyable, I wasn't bored. Lots of action, and the movie only characters aren’t bad.
It’s not in my top 3, but it’s close.

I noticed that at the end of the credits, there wasn’t a teaser for the next movie. Was there none in Japan, or was the only post-credits scene Ran on an electric scooter?

They also almost completely removed her from the OP 1 remake for the 30th anniversary and replaced the Next Conan's Hint with a remake of the old next episode title screen so Haibara would be there instead and she would be gone. They've been using this since January. They're really not subtle about wishing she was gone. Like straight up they treat her like a nuisance.

I think she was a guest VA character for the movie. Either the actress personally likes CoAi so they tossed her in the background happy about it, or it was just another symptom of being a Sakurai movie and wanting to have someone notice them.

That screen practically broke a long standing tradition. In all 30 years the only time their hint pic ever excluded Ran were the ones that had no characters on it at all.
