One of the parts that annoy me about the Higurashi anime is exactly how they shy away from monologues from the Higurashi VN to try to keep "realistic" pacing. Tons of anime don't carry if it doesn't make sense for real time and still keep monologues there, but Higurashi almost always seems to avoid that. Even though the VN even gives an excuse for this a couple of times (outright mentioning that it feels like time is standing still while the monologue happens).It just robs a lot of characterization and some scenes really relied on monologues to leave impact. Like how the scene where Keiichi decides to kill Teppei counting down to 1500 seconds is pretty famous among VN and manga readers, but it's nothing in the anime due to the lack of monologues.It also completely butchers the beginning of Minagoroshi since you don't see Rika gushing all over Satoko and going on about how important Satoko is to her since it's all in monologues due to it not being something she'd ever tell anyone else.

It's slower and there's less horror though. Compared to the VN it also still skips some big plot points.Higurashi Rei is an epilogue OVA series. It's technically not bad, but the one big cut it makes to the main epilogue story (Saikoroshi) is kind of baffling, because it's basically the main point of the story in the VN and the anime pretty much removes it for some reason. It feels kind of unnecessary in the anime, even if not bad, but is a great character conclusion in the VN.Then you have Kira, which are four light hearted OVAs, and Outbreak, a zombie movie-like one shot special sequel story that ends with a loose end cliffhanger in the anime.Then you have Higurashi Gou and Sotsu. They're the modern seasons and Gou starts as a pseudo-remake, and the first 3 arcs are all rehashes of arcs from the original series. However, it's actually a sequel. It's overall very controversial both due to questionable plot choices and the overall tone chosen by the new director that goes for exaggerated gore to the point of making violent scenes intentionally black humor, with few actual tense/horror moments. This series is also criticized because it feels like the direction of the two main characters here was chosen to set up two related characters from the author's other VN Umineko rather than because it'd make for a good Higurashi story.
