40-year-old boomer here, and I want you all to know that I miss my 80s and 90s romcom anime. Modern romcoms just don't hit the same way.
Kimagure Orange Road is the exact same garbage as the average modern romcom. 90% repetitive will they won't they.
>>291245173Yeah the story beats are no better than modern romcomslop but KOR has Ayukawa and modern ones don't
>>291245145Fellow 40-ish Japanimation boomer hereWhat's your opinion on the new Ranma 1/2 series?
>>291245173KOR has humour. You're not supposed to read it expecting a serial story. It's effectively a gag manga. It's like expecting narrative development in Peanuts>>291245409It's a better, but sadly more censored, adaptation of the manga, but part of the charm of Ranma 1/2 was how episodic it was
I understand, despite being a millenial in my 30s.Though that one anime, "Insomniacs after school", did give me fairly charming and even enlightening vibes despite not being for my gen anymore..
>>291245799That show was great. Shame that it was only 1 cours
>>291245145I recently watched Kimagure Orange Road and honestly the first opening was the best part of the show. If it had gags they failed to be funny>>291245915Insomniacs After School was really good, you should also check out the author's other mangas they're pretty good too and not as melodramatic
>>291245967I will for this panel alone
The last anime I watched where I could squint at it and distort it into the 80's style romcom was School Rumble and that was like 20 years ago now.
>>291245145Please boomer-sensei, recommend me all the romcoms you can
>>291245145I doubt any of the youngsters will like it. They won't find it funny and the romance goes nowhere. Too slow for the newer generations.
>>291245145Madoka's supremacy is established so firmly and quickly that I can understand people not wanting to put up with weekly hijinks
>>291247412some of them can probably still appreciate how homegrown and handpicked it looks, different mood than the ultra processed digital stuff they're used to
>>291245145YeahSlice of life Anime has become way too "caricaturized"Modern slice of life feel like a satire of life played by anime mascots.Older anime like pic felt like it had real characters that had to attend school, had to do their homework, see their parents struggling to make ends meet, dealt with coming of age and such.I wonder why the tone change..
>>291245145>I miss my 80s and 90s romcom anime. Modern romcoms just don't hit the same way.Lol at posting this and posting KOR of all things. It's like the absolute worst example of how to not do a romcom series. It's pretty much a pure vaporwave-core SoL with no actual romance beyond the first couple of episodes and barely even any comedy.>see their parents struggling to make ends meet, dealt with coming of age and such.Even all that stuff is 'fake' in this particular series though. It's not even like a harem anime or magical girl show that actually deals with the life problems of the individual characters, every episode will start with a fakeout premise that will pretend to do something, and without fail it will shown to be a nothing-burger misunderstanding by the end of the episode and nothing interesting will occur. This just continually happens for several dozen odd episodes.
>>291245799It's a nice, cozy story. And I normally don't like high school shit anymore.>>291245915It was enough to tell its full story, doesn't need more.
>>291245145Hey man, in your opinion: if I love Maison Ikkoku, will I like KOR? Dedicing on whether I should start it.
>>291250495>I love Maison Ikkoku, will I like KOR?In my honest opinion, liking Maison Ikkoku a lot is a strong sign that you would likely end up hating KOR.KOR is really not doing the long burn romantic progression Maison Ikkoku pulls off; it'll start off immediately implying a ton of interesting stuff is going on, and will then just spend the whole time constantly teasing you while a shit load of absolutely fuck all happens. Spoiler alert: nothing happens in any of the characters lives until the absolute last episode and you don't even get any real insight into them as people the whole time. The 'correct' way to watch KOR if you really wanted to get satisfaction out of it IMO would be to watch the first four episodes of the series, then the last 2, skipping everything else, then watching the OVA/films.
>>291250495Aesthetically for sure, story-wise only if you know what you're getting into. From what I've seen most MI fans hate KOR with passion because "nothing happens" which is kinda ironic given they like MI so much. To its defense I'll say:>48 episodes vs 96 episodes>story spans less than a year vs story spans 6-7 years>characters are middle schoolers vs characters are young adults>characters were okay with just hanging out as friends vs characters are looking to get into a serious relationshipIn that sense, MI is way more infuriating for taking almost 100 episodes and like 5-6 years for the mcs to finally get together, than the 15 year old mcs of KOR hanging out for 10 months before they confessed. But it is true that KOR is entirely a status quo episodic series until the very end, whereas in MI you see things gradually change (like Godai getting into college, graduating, then looking for a job etc.) and the last ~10 episodes of MI are very satisfying and rewarding.
>>291250950I wouldn't mind the lack of progression as long as it's funny. I wouldn't say Ikkoku is great because it progresses, but because Rumiko Takahashi has a great notion of the story engine: She squeezes every last drop of comedy out of the status quo, and then switches it up and does the same. By the halfway point you're thinking "we should wrap this up, there's not much more this story can offer" and then she introduces Yagami. The woman is a goddamn GENIUS.But thanks for the opinion, I'll give it a shot.
>>291251631>characters are middle schoolers vs characters are young adultsI don't live this but it's not a deal breaker. It's funny how so much of manga and anime happens in high-school. There's a case to be said for Japan seeing themselves as the Peak-Early society.
>>291248882
>>29124514542 year old boomer here, 80's and 90's romcoms were unbearable never-go-anywhere shit and I'd much rather take something like Bokuyaba.
Love Hina needs a remake so its only adaptation isn't dogshit. The manga is peak romcom.
>>291253131Was not expecting to find a brother in this thread.
>>291245145
>>291253716>remember back when naked children were shown in anime because it was unthinkable that they'd be sexualized?Fucking pedos, man
>>291253557Why would (You) say something so controversial yet so brave?
>>291254607It's a popular opinion.
>>291251631Is funny that they hate each other since in both manga the mc has the "girlfriend" that he doesn't give a shit about while pinning for another girl.
>>291254028The 80s was the peak of the first lolicon boom and there was tons of 3D cheese pizza floating around Japan back then. They just didn't think it was a big deal
>>291246171Wise decision
>>291245145One of the most fun to watch openings.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUHBABuuGDI
>>291247412Shame smart phones and social media have rotted everyone into having ADHD brains
>>291249923I def agree with this point. When I watch shit like Touch, KOR, or Maison Ikkoku for instance, the characters feel like they have a life beyond the panels of the manga/their appearance on screen. I honestly feel that this is a wider problem in storytelling not just in Japan, but also in the US
>>291247412>They won't find it funny and the romance goes nowhere. Too slow for the newer generations. The youngsters have been following KanoKari for 10 years and +500 chapters btw.
>>291257675The constant cuts to the credits slideshow are annoying as fuck.

>>291258539Spinning wheels is the least of that fucking trash's problems.
A Kimagure Orange Road thread, huh? I'll post these bras.
>>291260233Dang, look at the guns on that girl on panel 3
>>291259473Yes a lot. I'll skip it every episode. For a good reason.
>>291260997That's a 13 year old child you sickfuck!
>>291261343I said "guns", not "cans." The arms.
>>291261215You'll get used to it.
>>291251631>story spans less than a year vs story spans 6-7 yearsThe Maison Ikkoku story spans about four years, actually. Kyoko states she's 22 the episode where she knits mufflers for everyone, the second Christmas she's spent at Ikkoku (She moved in at the middle of November) and she states she's 26 while she's trying to torpedo the meeting with Mitaka's parents near the end.
>>291263832It's her whole year as 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, some months as 21, and then the timeskip that happens at the end. So she starts at 21 and ends as 27.
>>291260997Guns? Not cleavage? Or bra?
>>291245145Recommend me somet. Zoomer
>>291265857>>/wsr/
>>291265857Start with Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku, Kare Kano.
>>291258858You're newfag is showing
>>291245145Kimagure was fucking shit though, and I read the manga as well, honestly most romcom are fucking shit.
>>291265857KareKano, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Touch, Oh! My Goddess, mizuiro jidai, and Yawara!
>>291256070I think is super funny how as a response to the lolicon boom the onee-san boom happened.
>>291267859Buddy, many people including me know that the use of ''boomer'' is not literal or it's intentionally used incorrectly depending on the context, heck, there is even a sub-genre in video games that does exactly that (the so-called ''boomer shooter'') but even so, there are people who simply don't agree with the idea or concept of using ''boomer'' to refer to people who are in their 40s or something, that person probably knows that the OP used ''boomer'' in that way (''40-year-old boomer here''), it's kind of obvious but again, there will be people incluiding me who will be like ''no, that's millennial, not boomer'' even though it's something popular to do. Also, it doesn't matter if that person is a ''newfag'' (newbie please) or not, that doesn't make that person inferior or superior to anyone else.
>>291253716This is a very charming reaction
>>291248941The problem isn't whether Madoka is superior or not, but Kyousuke not just picking her from the beginning and sticking with it. The only driver of the romance being drawn out was just him being a total pussy. The first film is the epitome of this: >>291245173They solved in one heartwrenching 10 minute scene what they couldn't do in several tankoban.
>>291253716People who hate Hikaru are monsters with no soul. Not only does she arguably have the prettiest eye color in anime history, but she's an absolute sweetheart. She is the pure and naive portion of the relationship, but because of that is fiercely passionate about trying to get what she wants. She lives in complete denial that Kyousuke has a thing for Madoka and vice versa but she also never does anything to drive them apart. She got done bad in the film, but considering the length of time she was led on without a firm determination, you get why she's so fucked up by it.
KOR soundtrack > Evangelion soundtrack.40 years later, and he still hasn't topped this masterpiecehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFVRG7uqdRw&list=RDCFVRG7uqdRw&start_radio=1
The OVAs looked gorgeous.
…? Orange Chode?
>>291271068Indeed they are
>>291272016Don't use Moozi. He kills all the grain.
Romcom is legitimately the only genre of anime that has improved over the years.
>>291272069Yeah, he was the only torrent I could find several years ago. I'll update it
>>291273080Also, I should add that it seems to be an issue with the OVAs, and not the series itself
>>291251631>MI fans hate KOR with passion because "nothing happens" which is kinda ironic given they like MI so much. There's more nuance to it than that.MI is just a much more 'organically written' series where whatever happens is just kind of allowed to play out naturally, and the situations that come up let you peak into different aspects of the characters and their lives and things will play off each other in charming ways while you see the characters grow up with each other. It's a long, slow series, but one where you really feel you're seeing a significant part of the character's lives as the ultimately realize what they mean to each other.KOR is much more frustrating because it doesn't simply 'not progress', it constantly fakes you out, pretending it will offer more depth and substance while actively regressing and becoming more simplistically written as it goes on. It's almost entirely vibes based and does nothing but stray from what it seemed to be about at the start (i.e. showing how and why the mature beyond her years Madoka is rebelling from her well to do but strict family and involving herself in all kinds of delinquent drama, which never ends up happening in any way).
>>29124514540? Boomer my ass, you're a fucking early millennial!
>>291245145I keep getting told Orange Road is imporant and influenced many things but I dont know anyone who has watched it. Is it like a Flash Gordon situation?
>>291245173>Kimagure Orange Road is the exact same garbage as the average modern romcomIt's much worse actually. I'd take pretty much every romcom that aired this year over KOR.
>>291245643I'm really getting sick of all these censored remakes that are only getting made so covid tourists can claim they've watched classic shows.I swear to god the new Sgt Frog show only exists to nerf the mom's boobs.
>>291245145As a kid I was 100% Madoka but as an adult I'm Hikaru all the way. It's all about someone whose love is unconditional and doesn't make you insecure . Plus Hikaru will totally be willing to try anything you want in bed.>Justice for HikaruShe didn't deserve the shit treatment she got in the movie, especially when everything was Madoka and Kyosuke's fault. The manga handled the resolution so much better.
>>29127106880s and 90s designs fused together in the best possible way
>>291274890KOR was one of the first major love triangle series and the most popular of its time. It's also kinda famous for resolving the love tirangle in a way that everyone hated and is one of the big reasons for "business as usual" endings. There's an "Even a monkey can draw manga" page that indirectly refers to KOR
>>291245967Fujiyama-san was a great series. It deserves an anime.Cute slice of life with reasonable progression that never felt like it was blue-balling you
I remember seeing Miyuki on tv when I was 9 or so.
Wow, I knew /a/ was shit like a septic tank these days, but I didn't expect such awful takes as "rom coms are better now". Just because you fags only care about the destination and not the journey shows how much the modern Internet has rotted your brains.
I love how curvy female characters were drawn back then.
>>29124514520 year olds will watch a single Kimagure Orange Road opening on youtube and then make threads on /a/ saying "40-year old boomer here..."
>>291276634Touch has an enjoyable journeyMI and KOR do not. Their journeys are fucking excruciating.
>>291276634>/a/ is shit because it's not a hivemind who agrees with meGreat post.
>>291245145>I miss my 80s and 90s romcom anime>missThese posts need to be studied, because if you were born in 1986 you didn't grow up with 80s romcoms and likely watched this shit in the 2000s/2010s/2020s torrented and with fansubs like everybody else. You can't fucking miss something that you only watched 30 years after it finished. And unless you're literally Japanese you didn't grow up with 90s romcoms either since almost none of them left Japan, unless you're counting shonen anime with romcom elements.
>>291275815I pretty much watched the entire series because of Madoka but after it was over, I realized how special Hikaru was.I actually quite missed Hikaru in a way like you would miss a friend/lover, while I didn’t really think of Madoka much at all.
>>291276726Nah, it's 'cause you have shit taste, anonymous. Various other takes in here I don't agree with, but I can understand.>>291276717Hard disagree. Touch was excruciating due to everything Eijiro related and the romance nothing special, if you ask me. Something like Chihayafuru does the sports (well, sorta) and romance thing FAR better.Maison Ikkoku is also peak rom-com. Everything develops gradually and doesn't just end the second the couple get together like almost every other series in this genre (that's IF the couple together in the show, rather than them just smiling at each other and you having to take that as them being a couple now).
>>291276768>anime didn't exist until internet piracy Cool story bro
>>291276863>doesn't just end the second the couple get together That was most welcome in my viewing. I was surprised that we had reached the moment most series of this type end, and we had three more episodes to go. Gave a lot of room to satisfyingly wrap up every character's story and provide a proper send-off. I thought Akemi's was a little rushed but whatever; the bar owner was then legally divorced, took his shot with that absolute smokeshow and scored.
>>291276863Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa is one of the best for this and subverts a lot of the cliches. You get a lot of natural progression and it avoids resets as much as possible>Losing girl is alone with MC on a beach>starts to confess >gets too embarassed and starts running off>MC grabs her hand and stops her, tells her to continue and that he will stay as long as it takes for her to be able to say what she needs to>She gets the confession out, MC gentley unambigiously turns her down. His newest series is cute as fuck too and the high concept setting allows the author to do all the kind of humour he's best at.
>>291277127I don't like girls confessing to guys. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I think it's the man's duty to take that step.
>>291277729That was a one sided love. This is when he confesses
>>291277729
>>291277834No drawing out, no misunderstandings, resolved in the same chapter
>>291275766I've been thinking about Sgt Frog lately but the total # of episodes is daunting and I hear it drops off in later seasons. It's mostly episodic and I can just watch a season or two at a time right?>>291275815>>291275861I'm glad I went into the KOR anime completely blind, it's great. I even liked both the TV and movie endings. I'll try to pickup the manga in the future when I'm caught up with other series. Ayukawa feels much human than Hikaru throughout the series, she clearly revels in her semi-illicit relationship with Kyousuke and specifically enjoys being able to take his attention away from Hikaru's "unconditional" love. It's pretty realistic in that sense. Even assuming Hikaru isn't (probably) the type to love you forever and ever for about 5-10 years before she wakes up one day and decides to upend her life on a whim, it's for the best that they split. Kyousuke & Ayukawa are neither good nor bad people, but are mostly self-interested and able to cover for each other, even if they fight occasionally. Hikaru being cut loose gives her the opportunity to grow beyond just being an accessory on Kyousuke's arm.
>>291275815I'm disappointed that we never got the manga finale animated
>>291276768Or you watched them in the 90s because they were available then.
>>291245145If you’re 40 years old, wouldn’t you be Gen-X, not a boomer? Then again, I’m a relatively older zoomer, so what do I know? Also, I can’t really make much of a statement on romance anime, since it’s not really my wheelhouse (more of a fantasy and sci-fi and comedy anime fan), but I can say that I enjoy both modern and older anime, since they both provide different things I find entertaining and charming. That said, do you have any older romance anime recs, particularly ones with a comedic bent? I’m already reading Ranma 1/2 and have watched a bit of Urusei Yatsura (mostly the ryuunosuke episodes (ryuu x benten for life)), so do you have any romance-comedy recommendations other than those?
>>291277834>>291277846>using "-san" while professing one's love>using "yoroshiku onegaishimasu"Japanese people are weird, man.
>>291275766>the new Sgt Frog show only exists to nerf the mom's boobsWhere do you fags come from? Obviously the show is made for profit, not to make it harder for you to jerk off. Who's the tourist here?
I'm also 40. I'm more into fantasy/adventure than rom-com, but if anything I think the anime/manga scene got better over time, not worse. >>291278021>If you’re 40 years old, wouldn’t you be Gen-X, not a boomer? Not even - millennial.I think OP is using "boomer" to convey "old fuck" though.
>>291277127Maybe I'll give it a watch, anon. Appreciate the suggestion. Also, am I being baited by all the "boomer" crap ITT?
>>291278425>Maybe I'll give it a watch, anon. Appreciate the suggestion.NTA. If you're talking about Jitsu Wa, read the manga. The anime adaptation is awful.
>>291275921Miyuki was very fun. Too bad the adaptation stops just when things started happening in the manga.
>>291278652Seconding this. The anime removes all the charm of the manga.
>>291275921>>291279083There was also Aishite Night on tv here which I enjoyed a lot.>>291279083I don't remember much, other than that one Miyuki was his step (?) sister or something and that the first episode ended with a towel drop.
>>291279289Yeah it was a fun incest anime with very unsafe horny moments. Made me miss the old times.
I like Jitsu Wa, Chihayafuru, Maison Ikkoku. I don't feel any of them are really comparable. Looking at some other romcoms that I've read Kaguya-sama (enjoyed but didn't finish, everyone hates on the later stuff, but the comedy still works for me and it doesn't take away from the earlier dramatic moments hitting). Komi (stopped reading after a while, but it is just SOL with goofy characters, the romcom stuff is second). My Dress-Up Darling (dropped after a long hiatus, I hear it did the usual thing where it kind of just stopped after they became a couple). Nagatoro (I liked it a lot at the beginning, but the guy clearly wasn't the best at longer narratives so it just ends up being a bunch of big boob girls naked, which I like but it wasn't what I was reading it for). I count Harem as a separate thing.
The ones I'm following right now are "So You Weren't Into Me?" and "Artemis under the roof." Mostly for the art, since the former's is good ol' ecchi and the later's is genuinely good. But the stories are mind bleach.Sometimes you just wanna unplug from work and read trash for a few minutes, you know?
>>291254028Sexualization in general was just more common back then.I find it funny how societies flipped how much they demonize and accept sexualization vs violence.
