Much, much MUCH later, and this is really getting quite spoilery now, it gets discovered that people are slowly becoming capable of applying some of the ingame abilities in real life also because the capsules are powered by some kind of alien tech that no other VR game has, at which point the importance of the game and its top players shoots up through the roof.
