Final episode, welcome to the electric age
This series was a fever dream, no wonder the original author complained.

>>291252226Of course.
>>2912517195/10I couldn't make it to the end but it looked pretty, I guess.
>>2912517191/10.Thank goodness this trainwreck is finally over.Wonderful looking visuals as expected from Kyoto Animation, but unfortunately their scriptwriting consistency leaves lots to be desired nowadays.Yes, I can clearly see the recurring themes like wanting to pursue and keep one's dreams alive, but the narrative direction is so all over the place that whatever development that does take place feels unsatsifying. It's probably not an issue if one has a taste of messy nonsensical drama and plotting, but there's no nuance, subtlety, or genuineness to be had here, at least for me. It really sucks cause this was a show I was looking forward to the most prior to the start of Summer season. Out of the countless things that irritated me, Yosuke was definitely the elephant in the room, so it's not an exaggeration to say he singlehandedly ruined the show, which makes saving him in the end not just spitting in the face but taking a huge dump on everything, as he had no redeeming qualities to remotely sympathize with him.Even taking Yosuke away from the equation, the finale wasn't that satisfying as it looks on paper. For all the shoveling of plot development, the show imho never really developed the characters well at all; I especially found it hard to really get invested in Kihachi and Inako and their artificially shoehorned dynamic. It also felt like nothing was really resolved or accomplished, like...what was really achieved here? They pursue Seiroku's legacy and memento only to find essentially nothing (YES, NOTHING) and just be like "nah we never needed it in the first place"...like sure they needed to do so to realize this in the first place, but then what was even the point of this wild goose chase from the start. No wonder why the original creator hated this.
>>291251673>This series was a fever dreamDoes it mean it was...good?
This shit sucked even worse than City. What a waste of effort.
Gay power is restored!
Unexpected gosling moment
Probably by far the worst KyoAni series I have finished. It was stunning to look at as always, but writing and characters were just so bad. I really only finished this for Kihachi and Inago.
Is this okay to talk about right now? Okay. This was fucking tragic. It tries to be thoughtful or stir your strings with lines about faith, and showing that relationship between Serioku and Yosuke but it sidelines Kihachi and Inako so much you can barely tell they are supposed to be the main point. Even the scene of giving Electric Nishiki to Kihachi does not exist when it was mentioned a week ago how Inako should think about a special person she wants to make sake for, and does not even give him ?! Don't even get me started on Yosuke this is straight up a fujoshi bait series meant to somehow gather attention by beating so obsessed with showing ASS. The show is dead-ass more interested in Yosuke than Kihachi and Inako so much it goes in insane direciton just to give him screen time. WHY THE FUCK did we give him the note in episode 3 about Catalogue being real? WhY the FUCK does Kihachi care about him/started caring after 5 MIINUTES of being in the same room bordering on baiting. WHY THE FUCK DO WE EVEN SAVE HIS ASS AND HE IS FREE TO GO?! Yeah sure cute moments on Inako and Kihachi when there was barely any bonding in the god damn show to begin with, being so focused on Yosuke sheneningans, random fillers for no god damn reason like Liebe. This was abhorrent.

I enjoyed this as the last thing Kyoani makes before they sell their soul to the devil
Easily Kyoani's worst anime to date. Some entertaining interactions and expressive character animation aside, the series has nothing going for it.
i like it, inako carried the show for me
>>2912517197ish. I enjoyed alot of it in isolation, infact, I enjoyed most episodes on their own while watching them. Was always engaged and intrested, but the story failed to come together into a concise whole, mostly due to the split tone/structure. I've said it before, so I wont repeat myself here, but it felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be. Aside from that, the music was good, the animation and art style was stellar, and the characters were endearing and fun, with Inako specifically being standout as cute, beautiful, funny, lovely, cute, pretty, etc. Also. Protip, post an image when you ratepost so people are more likely to reply
Do we know anything about what this show would have been like if Takemoto hadn't gotten killed in the fire?
>>291253931Considering the issue with us lies solely on the script and whoever approved of it ...
>>291251719If Blockbuster still existed and I had rented this anime, I would've went back to Blockbuster and demanded my money back.Make of that what you will.

>>291251719Worst Kyoani show by far. How the fuck did this even happen...
>>291251719Mid till the end 5.5/10. Unironically would be better without Yosuke or gayness in general.
I swear this show operates on looney tunes logic
It bothers me greatly how Kihachi's fear of the darkness was something that just kept randomly coming up but never actually got resolved
shit dialogue until the very end. the term has been poisoned by western translators thinking they can do better than the creators, but the script really needed to be punched up, at the japanese-language stage, of course. for starters, let's not repeat this shit 5 times per episode. maybe it's kyoani trying to do the netflix thing of continuously restating the basics for a distracted audience? in any case it backfired. i think i would have actually enjoyed it with a dub in a language i don't understand and subs turned off
Yamakan got fired for less. Or maybe it really was a sexual harassment that got him booted
In retropsect it was a ridiculously ambitious move giving a first time series director in Minoru Oota such a high concept series that also makes a lot of substantial changes to its source material. Something like this is usually reserved for more experienced directors. He definitely stuck the landing in everything but the writing though so he's at least comendable for that.
>>291254952>yeah it was unwatchable but at least it looked nice!Come on anon, he fucked up the moment he did the standard>let's ignore the source material!kyoani shit, all he did was show he's completely retarded.
This somehow managed to be the worst anime I watched this season and I fucking watched Tenbin. This crap was like the anime equivalent of buying a video game you were excited to play, booting it up, and having to do a tutorial... but the tutorial never fucking ends and you don't know when you'll ever get to the actual gameplay/story.Also, what the fuck was with that random rock band episode? Even Needy Girl Overdose made more sense than this and that anime was a terrible adaptation of the game.
Kyoani did a great job with the animation and art direction, and the series director made some bold aesthetic choices that paid off superbly. Love the impressionistic touches in the background art which really helps sell the steampunk setting and the studio manages to flex their skill in 2D background and mechanical animation in several instances during the series. The story's not much to write home about, just like most of their adapted novels but it's amusing enough. Overall I got my very well-made entertainment so I can't complain. Will be keeping an eye out for Minoru Ota's future projects, dude seems like an interesting director.
>>291251653So this is the bl paralysis demon fujos have manifested...
>>291255014Yeah, guy's an idiot and this shit bombed as hard as it could, it's being ridiculed everywhere for its retarded story.Japan is doomposting kyoani hard with this series in a >what the FUCK is wrong with themway
>>291254952>He definitely stuck the landing in everything but the writing thoughClusterfuck writing is a downstream consequence of more fundamental problems before a single word is put to paper. What on earth was the show trying to do or be? The director's job is to understand that and make sure everyone else does too.
>>291251653>welcome to the electric agemore like the homo age
>>291254952>substantial changes to its source materialEvery Kyoani adaption besides Haruhi is vastly different. They always make big changes. In any case I wish they would stop already adapting half ass LN/manga.
>>2912517197/10 Yosuke was the most fun character this season, hopefully the director isnt anchored to Gosling sake slop next time.
>>291255269Nah, their key adaptations were faithful, hibikek mostly too like the blatant yuribait. The problem is when they get their hands on their own LNs and they go fullretard with the plots.-

>>291255912I'll miss Mari, she deserved to be in a better show
I did not think this show was particularly good. But what a fucking weird execution, no shit the show was visually gorgeous, had really great directing (loved Yosuke slowly falling in this episode), performances that I felt like were noticeably better than most shows, really lively and fun characters. But the show itself was somehow kind of boring? I haven't read through this entire thread yet but I see someone mentioning Lara and I can see the comparison, I guess I maybe liked Lara slightly more? I was obviously just expecting a slow SoL "romance" show with great visuals there so I mostly got what I expected (save for ultimately being kind of let down) but here I definitely got a more...exciting show? But it just somehow never actually got me really excited, the concert episode was probably the closest I got and while there was fun stuff all throughout the show I just don't think I had particularly much "fun" watching it. Oh well.
>>291251719Absolutely loved it, 9/10, there should have been more. Only criticism I have is that the MCs fix Yosuke's mess but not Yosuke's heart. That just happens serendipitously and frankly I don't understand why after the show consecrated one entire episode about healing a lady from the grief of her husband passing. Moreover Yosuke has his epiphany privately and seemingly does not change objectives and will keep trying to make his Seirokubot. How strange. Not that I think Yosuke should absolutely be fixed but this still seems a bit short. Also Izo deserved more
>>291256582Oh yeah I'll also throw in a maybe slightly unique /a/ perspective. I like weird gay shit in anime a lot but even here I just really couldn't get into it because the show itself was just constantly feeling off for me. I also didn't get anything from whenever they tried pandering with Yosuke and Kihachi since Inako is just way cuter.
What did you learn from this anime?
>>291257061Fat tits are dangerous, even when they're on a man.
Minor nitpick that isn't even the show's fault but Japan's law autism is so annoying some time. Imagine finally being able to make a perfect sake recipe left behind by your mother and not being able to drink the fruits of your labor with your friend because you're not old enough to drink.
>>291257153You just need to show a giant disclaimer saying "underage drinking is bad, mmkay?"
>>291257153sora no woto did it in a direct-to-video bonus ep
>>291255118>This somehow managed to be the worst anime I watched this season and I fucking watched TenbinI can tell you didn't watch mebius dust
>>291257153Japan didn't have a drinking age restriction before 1922. This takes place in 1907. This fucking studio chickened out.
>>2912517148/10 – The best KyoAni show of the last 15 years.
>>291257061Men should be unecessarily sexualized more, for the sake of comedy and eroticism
When you're trying to pitch a book, movie, etc, you're supposed to be able to sum up the premise in a single sentence that will make people interested. How would you describe this show, /a/? What's the premise? I can't summarize what this show was actually about and that's its biggest problem.
>>291257242
>>291257368I mean the premise is really fucking simple, a boy wants to bring about the age of electricity in an alternate steampunk Japan using notes left behind by his brother.
>>291256044Shitty character
>>291255950Because he is. He was loved the most by the studio and you can see it in every choice they made for him, in the choice to rewrite his plotline, in the lines of his squiggly ass on the screen, in the wide array of 70s shojo german expressionism and horror faces he makes, in the way he appears in every episode even when it's completely unecessary.
>>291257430But enough about Yousuke
>>291257368"What if you took this lame book and added a schizo yandere gay dude wearing the tightest pants you've ever seen in it?"
>>291257061Dont give your light novel book to kyoani if you want them to stay faithful to your work ffs.
>>291257368That picht thing is only an issue if you want to sell your movie in an american elevator to a producer. Moreover the delusion your personal inability to synthetize a premise means the show is lacking in one is just that: a delusion.
>>291257615Kyoani doesn't have quality control for the LNs, it's why they suck so hard
>>291257558Better than Mari
>>291257681Can't be worse than the anime desu
>>291251691This guy feels like the main character
>>291257754From what I remember from someone who posted years ago, they are kadokawa rejects, extremely amateurish and riddled with typos. You know how narou novels go from webnovels to polished LNs? Those are narou-tier.
I pretend to be outraged over how unfaithful the adaptation is even though I haven't read a single LN in my entire life
>>291255464Would make even shit like K-ON watchable
>>291257885Good job fitting in anon.
On the bright side, surely this means we'll get our break in case of emergency Haruhi S3!
>>291255464I wanted him to fistfight Inako and lose, what a shame.
>>291257835I like my naroukei but how the fuck do you get rejected from kadokawa
>>291255629I liked both. The only summer series I dropped was that dead yuri school show. Only picked 7 shows up to begin with though. Lara's end was garbage though.
>>291257885Nothing wrong when Kyoani only adapts shitty novels to begin with. I doubt this would be that much better if they adapted faithfully. All this talent wasted on subpar sources.
>>291257885They deviated so much from the original LN they had no idea how to make a compelling ending.
Interesting that Yosuke doesn't like alcohol yet his fantasy about Seiroku is filled with it. Alcohol is a metaphor for happiness and love, very rare to see such an overwhelmingly positive take on the thing in this day and age. Saki sleeping everywhere is literally the only slightly preachy "careful not to drink too much guys" message you get. But then again it just fits the theme of how Inako taking over the brewery reignites the love between her and her family and makes her awaken to her own feelings for Kihachi.
I didn't even know this was based off an LN until it was like halfway through and maybe this is retarded so say but this show was so mediocre that I'm highly skeptical a "faithful" adaptation would even be better than what we got.
The entire time I couldn't stop thinking: what a waste of an amazing animation. It had an interesting premise, but every part of the execution was lackluster. I dreaded every second Mizoe was on-screen, so much so that it made me think I was perhaps being bigoted.
>>291257295Mebius Dust was about a trillion times better than this.
>>291257530You always have more liberty with antagonists because they're not made to represent any sort of moral or be the audience's surrogate character. Nobody cares if the antagonist is gay, insane or a nazi but you have to be cautious with how you write the MC. Which is why villains are always the best characters.
>>291258186>very rare to see such an overwhelmingly positive take on the thing in this day and age.The fuck are you talking about? I can think of like five anime from the last five years that treat drinking extremely positively, and like zero that treat it negatively.
>>291258261Maybe I just watch too many shonen where kids are like "HUH YOU CANT GIVE THIS TO ME GUYS IM A MINOR" but while I know that's the general attitude toward the thing in japan my experience is that anime is very preachy about it.
>>291258261Not him but I always roll my eyes when an 16 year old anime character says he's too young to drink. It's just really fucking stupid if you aren't Japanese and hard to take seriously.
>>291258317>>291258325I mean yeah that's completely fucking retarded and in 90% of anime but that's completely different from the idea of alcohol not being treated positively.
>>291255654I wanted to watch it just for the visuals but I liked neither main characters and couldn't care less about some bait yuri romance so I dropped it early on.
KyoAni managed to make a show even worse than VEG or RDG
>>291258575The worst Kyoani ever was Tamako Market, sadly I can no longer say this...
I had a brainfart and typed in RDG when I meant Munto >>291258575
>>2912517196/10, animation and visual hard carried this anime, but the story was just kinda meh, Inako and her friends were literally the best part of the anime and I loved the proto K-on episode, the gay undertones were pretty funny until they were not.Honestly, it was a bloody mess. You can tell Kyoani was desperately trying to emulate Ghibli here, especially the plane and the part where Yosuke was falling.>>291255629Shiboyugi, but that one was very fun at least.
>>291258575Nothing will ever be more nonsensical than Amagi and Tamako to me and nothing more boring than K-ON, that dragon sitcom and Tsurune.
Saved the show from being an absolute trainwreck wost of all time disaster, however it only brings it up to a 2 or 3 out of 5 at best. The visuals and gimmicks can only go so far when the writing is mostly trash and KyoAni suicidally pushed a yaoi rapist in a show that was supposed to be about these two. With that and them losing the Yamahabux from Euphonium now that it finally won't get any more anime the future of the studio is not looking good.
>the next Kyoani show is also faggot stuffIt’s really over isn’t it
>>291259128Isn't their next show ruri dragon? Their bread and butter gimmicy sol shit with a meme girl?
>>291259128Isn't the next one some moe garbage?

So yosuke stayed miserable till the end, even after his dead boyfriend asked him to move on.
>>2912517196/10Great animation, interesting setting, but man are most of the characters kind of a mess, and the story felt a little oddly rushed. Like the actual plot was put on hold for 4 episodes in the middle of the show and started really picking up somewhere around episode 10.I think I recall an anon saying that the original director for this show died in the fire and some of the original design work on it was also destroyed, and that definitely makes sense.
>>291259250I am glad it was only a CM and I even like gay shit. But the designs in that were godawful and looked like girls.

>>291260378>Kyoani generic guy facewhat's "kyoani generic guy face" about Kihachi's constantly dead-tired face?
>>291251719Meh. Beautiful visuals, direction and animation with a boring plot, one-note characters, repetitive dialogue and lack of tension. I swear to god if I have to hear 電気の目録 one more fucking time I'm gonna lose it. The only episodes of the show I truly enjoyed where the middle bit of "electronic device of the week", the concert episode was the stand out. When it leaned into it's wacky premise and played with animation styles it was legitimately fantastic, but it's attempts at drama came off as tonally confusing and dull. The Seiroku wank and the constant bickering about the damn book just got tiring.>>291257153I hated this too. For the time the show takes place in there'd be no issue with both Kihachi and Inako having a cup of the sake she made. Hell even in modern day I doubt many would care considering how much it means to Inako to let her have even just a sip. Not having at all at the end felt so lifeless.
>>291251719Feel like it would have worked better as a Ghibli animated movie. I didn't hate it but probably wouldn't recommend it.
So disappointing.I read the novel few years ago and I loved the story. I had high hopes this will be good especially with the beautiful animation but every episode I am more and more disappointed. They changed the original story just to appease fans and for bl lovers to ship freely the antagonist with the older brother. Weird double standards. This was created more for sales than appreciation for the author's work. The antagonist from a greedy 30 years old man, was changed to a grieving girlfriend. He is creepy and cringe turning the whole anime into a joke. The protagonist was turned to a massive cry baby with low confidence. The best friends of Inako were made too look like they have something for each other.Inako was portrayed as annoying.Definitely I don't recommend this one.

Hibike S3 and the compilation movies for it were the studio's swan song, and this is their death warrant.Ruri dragon is 2 decades too late, no on gives a shit about new SoL moe crap where nothing happens anymore, all they will be able to do is try to make it gay, which they almost certainly will as they did with both this and Hibike, and also like both of those, they won't deliver and will only bait, so in the end no one will like it.They should be dead as a business or have their leadership (read: listening to the women employees) ousted and become just another random anime studio soon enough.KyoAni is basically the same situation as western game studios where women take over and want to make everything gay and stupid and shit on their audience they just do that for a few years riding on the coattails of their past successes from before they did that until the business starts to fail and they get laid off.
What caused nu-/a/ to have so much vitriol towards Kyoani? Not even talking about this show because it fucking sucks and nobody likes it, but there's so many odd posts here acting like Kyoani is just complete shit and has always been complete shit.

Kihachi and Inako get their actual happy ending in the novel.(The whole Seiroku/Yosuke/robot plot is not in the novel - this whole Yosuke being obsessed with Seiroku is invented by KyoAni).Yosuke is still a freaking creep for wanting to marry Inako to get that sake recipe (that's the business he wants to succeed in the novel due to him wanting to get the business from his sister).Anyway Saki (his sister) eventually breaks off the marriage between Inako and Yosuke.Inako's father was initially against Kihachi marrying Inako (same as he was against Seiroku x Noriko) but Kihachi promises to study for 5 years and return to be worthy of marrying Inako (he also promises Inako he will return to her). They meet after 5 years again and end up together.

>>291263363You started with>What caused nu-/a/ to have so much vitriol towards Kyoani?Answer: beacuse this show is shitBeing unable to understand why means you somehow don't think it's shit
Free was good and I am tired of pretending it's not
CITY wasn't nearly as good as Nichijou
>>291263044KyoAni now specializes in shitting on the original works and changing them to push leftist and LGBT shit.>VEGIn the movie changed Gilbert to a hippie faggot who felt bad for fighting in the war so he abandoned everyone he knew, letting his own family and Violet think he was dead, so he could serve the country he fought against by being a farmer on some random island. They removed the romance. They removed the kiss between Violet and Gilbert, only showing a hug instead with no sign of romantic feelings. They removed where the two talk about starting a family together.Instead Violet just stays on the island where Gilbert went to dedicate his entire life to apologizing for fighting in the war to his enemies. Violet is implied to spend the rest of her life there and never marry him or have children, nor continue the work as an auto memory doll that the whole show prior to the movie was about or ever see anyone else she knows again.>HibikeThey removed as much of the romance between Kumiko and Shuuichi as they possibly could, only addressing it in the 2019 movie where they break up temporarily and Kumiko gives back the hairpin he gave her, asking him to give it back if he wanted to date her again after graduation. In S3 they never showed the scene from the novel (pic related) where they get back together, instead just showing Kumiko having the hairpin while working as a teacher in the future. Then, in the compilation movie Final Movie Part 2 adapting S3 as a movie, they didn't show Kumiko as a teacher in the future at all, nor the hairpin. They omitted Kumiko's romance entirely. And yet they, deceptively and honestly inexplicably, sold the hairpin as merch for the movie at theaters. Then, they took Kumiko's euphonium soli away which she won in an audition in the novel. They also removed the scene of her as a future teacher.>SparksMade it about pushing homosexuality and sidelined the original characters.
>>291263677Selling the hairpin at showings for Final Movie 2 when it wasn't in the movie and all the romance was removed was fucking diabolical

>>291263444>CITY wasn't nearly as good as NichijouYou say that, but we'll be back 5 years from now
It was a wild ride, Yosuke should be paying for destroying 1/4 of the city, and people and properties that died and he clearly didn't learn nothing, he is still obsessed by Seiroku. But let be real, there is nothing to say, this show was just crazy from the start, with a big boom in the end..
Seems like this show goes to stupid places but I think it's ok so far, I'm five episodes in and this is a solid 8 so far. One criticism I have is that it's a bit too zany, they are trying to cater to the modern audience perhaps.
>MC going into a dress 2 timesI can totally see why netflix got this show created as it's ran by women.
>>291255654Sayonara Lara was a nothing burger Yuri show, this was a something burger Yaoi show
Ok, but why it started as a show about electricity vs steam and ended with a fucking super advanced Artificial Intelligence?
>>291260821Oh yeah this show isn't serious at all, it's half gag comedy.
>>291263677>to push leftist and LGBT shit.Okay now I understand why there's so much negativity, it's just the usual anti-woke crowd. I only knew about the homo antagonist but if it makes your kind seethe it's probably worth the watch. I'll be binging it tonight.
>>291251653What was Inako's problem? He just needed bro for a second to update his ai chatbot. Why did she overreact and destroy the whole factory?
>>291251719It reminded me that kyoani is the best. Every other show this season pales in comparison in every aspect.
It pisses me off how they wasted Inako's cute design and Tenchan voice acting on such a terrible show
>>291251653Can electricity do this to you?
>>291251653Nope
I would watch an anime original Yosuke spin off.
>>2912517196/10. At first I hated Yousuke, but ultimately he was the one who salvaged the anime.I hope he will be happy in gay heaven.

I was looking forward to this since before the fire because i wanted a comfy historical SoL about CGDMT (cute girls doing Meiji things). It actually surprises me that nobody has picked up this simple premise.

>>291263044I've been talking shit about Kyoani for the last 20 years here though, nothing new about that, Haruhi gotta be one of the worst series ever.
>>291251653Dropped it at episode 1, what was the electric diary?

So will KyoAni learn that appealing to women and faggots doesn't sell, finally?
>>291267016why do you care if you dropped it
>>291267205>appealing to women and faggots doesn't sellBut it does, they just failed to appeal to anyone.

>>291268492Insane gay shit, peak
I was wondering what this crap reminded me of and then it dawned on me
>>291268461>KnK or that crap Muisagem no Pw or whateverThe only thing I remember about these two was (not boring, artificial and nonsensical) that I was baffled by how bad the plot was but I cannot remember a single content related fact anymore. >>291268691The woman that was cucked to death vs the man that was cucked to death, which one wins?
>>291251719Funny faces/10I feel like this show is developed and produced that way because of an obligation towards KyoAni Awards, and not even an arson could cancel that. The broader stroke is a disjointed mess of a storytelling from somewhat memorable little moments, but fags will defend this show purely from artistical standpoint, so I'd say that it's yet another duds in KyoAni roster. Can't wait until they ruin Ruridragon and Umi ga Hashiru Endroll as well.
Now that it's over, rate Inako's cuteness
>>291269394not like ruri has much to "ruin"
>>291269401Much cuter than in the novel. 8.5/10.
I can't prove it yet but I think this anime may have been a humiliation ritual for KyoAni.
cool wine aunt
>>291269394Ruri has a lot of room for improvement so letting Kyoani make up a story vaguely resembling the manga might have been the best choice.
Kyoani really needs to stop making gay shows for straight people.
>>291251719I'll go with 6.5 out of 10, and most of that is because of the art. The writing was pretty lacking.
>>291251755>inako ruins everything because kyoani refused to have yosuke hit a womanThis was lame.
>>291251912Kate's here. Episode saved!

>>291251653>cute girl lewd not allowed!>but male should be sexualized through the roof~This is why I fucking hate holier-than-thou women in charge at KyoAni. What a rotten shithole.
Yeah just finished itMy complaint about this final electric brain arc being rushed has only worsened. That ending was pretty silly. Way too over the top and unbelievable, bordering on fantasy. And the show was always pretty whacky and stuff. A shame, but they really didn't stick this landing ironically enough.HOWEVER, the one part that I did like was that Inago's sake was a success and tasted good according to the sexy alcoholic hag. I enjoyed that. Overall, I'd probably change my rating from a 7 to a 6. There are still alot of things I like about the show, but the whole package just isn't there. As good as the animation, art style, characters are, it's not enough to overcome the sloppiness of the general writing and the mismatched structure of the season. If they wanted the drama with the electric brain to work, they should have scrapped the SoL aspect. If they wanted the SoL aspect to work, they should have cut down on the drama. There was simply no room for both in the show. It is what it is. Inako is so fucking cute
>such laws didn't even exist yet>herbivore jap writers still have to cuck out
>>291254380They should have gotten even sillier. Have Inako fall into the tank while fighting Yosuke. Her body 'corrupts' the Seiroku doll and causes it to rise out of the ground, leading to a battle between the whole cast and a giant, steampunk robot.
>>291267191fucking lmao
>>291251673>the original author complainedFucking rude and unprofessional. He should be ecstatic just to have the chance at an adaptation. What did he even say?
>>291270239>unprofessionalYeah I'd complain too if they made my male character into an oversexualized faggot for women to lust after.
>>291270286But you are a faggot yourself??
>>291251719I was deciding between 3 or 4/10 depending on how the final episode turned out. While nothing about it was exceptionally bad compared to the rest of the show, it still annoyed me, so 3/10. I'm surprised I finished. I normally don't hatewatch shows.
uuuuuuuhjuyyuuuu
uuururrfyryeeeeee
eeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
ehueAuUAEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>291257295I have watched all three and Kyoani's was the least bad. Sparks of Tomorrow is pretty but has a deeply flawed story. Tenbin is barely animated and the story desperately needed streamlining (removing two characters entirely would have allowed them to fit the whole story in a single season). Mebius Dust was a complete disaster made by inexperienced people and a studio that clearly isn't capable of that kind of anime. Kyoani could probably have turned the concept into a good two-cour anime, considering they're fans of gay drama and disabled children.
>>291255654I at least enjoyed 11.8 episodes of Sayonara Lara. Sparks of Tomorrow was just an awful experience all the way through.
>>291270454I don't understand how you could not like ANY of it though. I can understand not liking it as a whole, but you really didn't enjoy a single episode? Not even in isolation?

>>291271023I agree, I will make sure to bring up Lara every time yurifags come to be annoying about anything. Praise Japan for giving us more material
Looking back, the ONLY WAY this show could have worked is this>first season/cour is full on SoL-kino following kihachi, inago, and their respective friends as they become a proper friendgroup and make electric inventions of the week.>second season or cour shifts tone and structure into a more narrative focused drama, introduce yosuke and having him chase them around for the 'lawg. Ultimately ending with tgem agreeing to work together>third season/cour is them building the electric brain while inako makes her sake finally. Takes an entire season to build the brain and it culminates in yosuke trying to kill kihachi.Basically all of the plot beats happen roughly the same but they all have the time they need to not feel rushed or incomplete. This final arc ABSOLUTELY did not fucking work at all. The concept of yosuke being an electric necromancer is novel and interesting, but it happened over two episodes. Ridiculous. It also would have needed to drastically tone down the fantastical element in the last arc. It was totally unbelievable
>>291251719Probably like 6/10 desu. I think I liked it slightly more than SayoLala.
>>2912517197.5/10. Super cute, has a Ghibli feel, great animation and backgrounds, I liked the retro/war themes, we got the best white haired yanhomo since ZaShunina, Inako is likeable and did a lot of work to win the Kihachibowl, and I'm glad that they showed Kihachi realizing he's in love with Inako. It's just lacking some things to make it a solid 8 or 9 for me, like I wish we got a more concrete ending for Yosuke, I want him to get over his dead crush and properly make the electric age with Kihachi. I understand that Kyoani really can't do certain things like that though since it's a LN adaption.
>>291253504Absolutely. I can't think of a worse KyoAni series. This had NOTHING going for it, other then the gorgeous art style and animation sometimes.
>>291255548Why the fuck didn't they KNOW City would bomb? Nijichou bombed as well. Why would think be different? KyoAni was kept afloat by otaku. Otaku which they kind of abandoned.
So did yosuke face zero consequences for his actions?>huge sinkhole opens up in the city>hundreds must have died>trillions of glorious thousand times folded yen in property damage>entire city's businesses: people's livelihoods, stopped dead in their tracks as steam machines exploded in the center of the city>months of rescue work and rebuilding>not even mentioning direct attempted murder on kihachi lmao>time skip. He's fine. Not in prison for anything or held accountable. I guess it's realistic because he's rich so his crimes don't exist lol
>>291270349>>291270361>>291270370>>291270381>when you're so gay you turn into a junji ito character

>>291271661Don't worry bro, it showed everyone running away from the debris and Yosuke probably paid for all repairs, construction, missed income, and hotel fees.
>>291271438Nah, I don't think I could handle a whole season of invention of the week shenanigans. Those were some of the worst episodes IMO. I think the show should have been more adventure focused, with Kihachi and Yosuke jet-setting around Europe learning about electricity.
>>2912517192/10. Inako was cute. That was its sole redeeming feature.
>>291271861>i know he's right, so I'll meta shitpost!I hate newfags with a passion.

>>291254510>>291260821>>291259843>>291260572Making Kihachi a delicate sanpaku eyed boy and putting him in stressful situations where he tears up exists purely to fuel the lust of Kyoani staff and other connoisseurs such as I. >>291271661Inako messed with all the delicate machinery. There was no indicator he tried to murder Kihachi.
>>291255629>>291255654I don't get the hate for either show, Needy Girl was very interesting to me even if the ending was kinda lame, as for Sayonara Lara I thought it was a very thematically complete and cohesive package and the shipper faggots (either yuri or het btw) seemed to have missed the point entirely, idk to me it's one thing to say a show was "bad" or "incompetent" on its own merits, it's another thing entirely to say so because it didn't do something YOU wanted or expected out of it and this applies to both needy girl and lara imo
>>291272008It's just funny.jpg (spooky edition)
>>291272008Is an allegory to homosexuality.
>>291271927KyoAni eradicated cute girl fanservice from many series, iconically K-On, but also cut out all Kanna nudity and panty shot or obvious nopan shot from Kobayashi-san chi no Maid Dragon. They are constantly removing fanservice of girls, but when it comes to men, they go all out lust and adding extra fanservice compared to source material instead of censoring, like here.I mention lolis, because KyoAni is fine sexualizing mature women, and only them.
>>291270454I actually think Denki had more bang for your buck desu. SayoLala didn't really have anything going for it beyond the romance baiting, and the romance didn't go anywhere, so what was even the point of it? They're both hard-carried by their art and style, and in Lara's case, the soundtrack as well.
>>291272190Don't you think an animation studio has the right to animate whatever the hell they want, or do you think all studios have some sort of moral obligation to omnipander as if they're required to meet a quota that satisfies all demographics?Just because a studio chooses not to animate lolishit doesn't mean they're actively trying to kill it. Do you just hate the free market?
>>291272270Watching Sayonara Lara after just having watched Cosmic Princess Kaguya really puts into perspective how lacking Lara was despite much smaller density.
>>291272306>Just because a studio chooses not to animate lolishitThey chose to animate loli series and removed fanservice on purpose. BY THE WAY the same series where they ADDED shotacon fanservice which didn't exist in the manga and shouldn't have been there at that scene. So fuck off, censorship apologist. I also didn't say they deserved to burn or some shit like that, I just called them out on being pieces of hypocrite trash that they are.
>>291272349>shotacon fanserviceWhat? i don't remember any shota fan service in anime unless you mean the lucoa bits with shota.
>>291272389Lucoa applying sunmilk to Shota as well as their every interaction up to that point. Also they never gave us a single closeup from Kanna on the lusty beach episode either on the other hand.
>>291272349Seems to me like you're only bothered by censhorship if it goes in one direction. As long as their business model works for them they'll keep doing what they do. Again, that's just free capitalism. Other studios can take the burden of animating sexualized underaged girls, meanwhile Kyoani can keep pandering to a niche fujofaggot audience. It's their loss for ignoring the bigger piece of the pie, right?
>>291271971Exquisite taste
>>291272475>Other studios can take the burden of animating sexualized underaged girlsExcept nobody does that today because of apologetic fucking shitheads like KyoAni and the whole anime industry. Also I never said censorship doesn't bother me in any direction. But they are not doing that, instead they are adding extra male service you shithead.Meanwhile lolicon is dead in modern anime completely and utterly.
>>2912517195/10Such a uniquely retarded show. The premise was already kind of weird, then the plot meandered so much in the first three quarters, seemingly unsure what it wanted to do and where it was going. And then all the unexpected gay shit, which I began to not mind just because of how bizarrely funny I found it. Like Kaichi being drugged and forced into a bridal dress was ridiculous but also hilarious. Inako is a great girl, though, the scene of Kihachi imagining her as a bride was great
>>291271023>the show nosedived because I didn't get muh yuri endinggod you faggots are such drama queens lmao
>>291272544>Except nobody does that today because of apologetic fucking shitheads like KyoAni and the whole anime industry. If there was an addressable market for lolishit in 2026, you'd get lolishit shows. I'm sorry no one is willing to put down the money to animate series pandering to your demographic but I guess it's just too damn niche. If some producer out there thought they could profit out of you, they would. I'm sure many diaper furry fags could relate.
>>291272468Well ngl that shota fan service is kinda disappointing to even think of it as fanservice. kanna playing twister was much better, that also puts into perspective how fanservice is unusually low in anime.
>>291272655Pretty sure there is still a huge market with how popular ruri rocks and onimai was.
if only kyoani weren't so anal with what they adapt, the art direction here would be so great on some of better manga but they get Isekai background stock.
>>291259843Watching this I get the sense the LN is more of a period piece and there's no steampunk fantasy elements.

>>291272839>modern sensibilitiesCompanies don't give a single shit about that kind of shit lmao. If your market exists, they'll milk the shit out of you within what is admissible in the law. Do you think Kyoani gets money from George Soros himself for animating gay shit instead of lolishit, schizo?

>>291273491You mean how it's so disconnected from and shits on everything it built up before like how Mari is lonely and fights everything by herself but she'll find someone who can stand beside her looking in the same direction? And Lara realizes her true love is Mari and declares all she wants is to live with her? Then 6 months later Lara randomly decides to fuck off to a different prefecture after Mari lost her pet and her memento of her dead mother (which Lara was at least partially responsible for), and she seemingly acts indifferent to Mari's feelings as she's leaving and doesn't even explain why she's leaving and gives no indication of when or if she'll come back. The better question is how someone who claims to have enjoyed everything before those last 5 minutes can defend it.
>>291251719I stopped watching after episode 7 and dropped it after reading threads for further episodes. It was bad, 4/10.
>>291273486I had completely removed it before you reminded me...
>>291273879NTA, the best move is to "compartmentalize" the anime. What I mean is, ignore the last 5 minutes.Without that last scene, the anime is quite decent and coherent with itself. The question now is: does that last scene completely delete the rest of the anime? The answer is subjective. Narratively, it was objectively a really bad choice. But when I think back on it, I don't remember only the last 5 minutes. I remember the growing relationship between Lara and Mari and that, in itself, has value I think.Keep in mind though that I've never cared about yuri.
>>291272349>>291272389Wasnt Free originally based on a shota swimming novel? Aging them all up was shota censorship.
>>291273879the ending didn't abandon anything, the whole motif of "standing beside someone" requires two functional people, if Lara moved into Mari's place right after the climax, she'd just be a freeloading stray living in her apartment with Mari forced to play full-time caretaker, Mari already has to juggle her boxing, her isolation, and grief over her mom so dumping an emotionally stunted ex fish onto her would have turned the whole dynamic into miserable codependencyyou mentioned Mari losing her pet and her mother's memento, and Lara being partially responsible, but if Lara stayed out of guilt or a sense of karmic debt to "make up" for what Mari lost, that would just be penance, and I think the writing does well here in refusing to trap them in a dynamic built on unresolved guilt and obligationalso in the final sequence, to me Lara doesn’t act cold because she doesn’t care, she acts restrained because a dramatic, tearful goodbye with promises of "I'll come back in X years" would only trap Mari in emotional limbo, waiting on someone else's timeline, Lara giving them both breathing room gives Mari the space to fight for her own life, while allowing Lara to finally get a job, pay rent, and build an identity of her owndeclaring that she wants to live in the same human world as Mari gave Lara a reason to exist, but to actually live in that world, she has to learn to stand on her own two feet first, I mean sure, the bittersweet tone isn't for everyone, but I feel like people calling the ending bad are the ones ignoring the previous 11 episodes, to me the story is much more about this fish out of water (no pun intended) in her journey towards becoming her own person rather than an immediate "cheap" romance
>>291273433I've seen pretty raving reviews desu, though mostly about Yosuke.
I thought i accidentally clicked the Sayonara Lara thread
>>291273879>straight anime is too gay>gay animie is too straight
>>291274255what a massive cope. If you have to mentally delete the last five minutes to make sense of the story, your read on the entire series was flawed from episode one, the finale is literally Lara learning to stand on her own two feet and live as an independent person instead of spending her life as Mari's freeloading emotional crutch, throwing around words like "objectively bad writing" just means you wanted an easy fairytale checkbox and got filtered when a character actually gained autonomy.
>>291274330I disagree. The story was very clearly about two people growing closer and accepting each other. The ending completely ruined it, because they separated without a valid reason, when they finally had the chance to live together. Remember: Lara was no freeloader. She worked, earned money and helped with chores in the house. Not to mention the company and "love" she provided to Mari. In a relationship as strong as their is supposed to be, you wouldn't worry anyway about being a "freeloader" anyway. You could argue that the entire journey was misunderstood by me.But then, most viewers share my exact ideas, and you know that too.In that case, the fault lies with the author/writer/director, not with the viewer.

>>291274369"most viewers agree with me, so the director failed" is the laziest appeal to popularity possible, casual viewers crying because their expected ship or emotional crying goodbye scene didn't happen just means the staff had the balls to make a character piece instead of crowd-pleasing fan servicealso, describing Lara's value as doing chores and providing "company and love" completely proves how stifling that setup would have been, her entire existence in the sea was defined by crushing duty, with an entire civilization's very existence breathing down her neck demanding she find "true love" to save them and their species, confining her to Mari's apartment just trades one set of expectations for another, turning her from a royal sacrificial lamb into a live in emotional support pet, I thought those themes with the expectations thrust upon her were very heavy handed and obvious and yet you still have people like this anon >>291274381 acting like they're just headcanon for some reason, people just want to see what they wanna see it seems and that's thatto me it's pretty clear that moving away gives Lara one of the first real choices she has ever made in her entire life, you cannot comprehend what "true love" or human life even means when you jump straight from an ancient curse into playing domestic housewife for the first person who took you in, the valid reason for leaving is staring you right in the face, she finally chose to live for herself
>>291274477>"most viewers agree with me, so the director failed" is the laziest appeal to popularity possiblIt's a perfectly valid critique, one you have not refused. You only appealed to a felt "elitism" because you "understood" themes that simply weren't there. The staff had, actually, no balls, because they went with the most "shocking" finale in an attempt to generate discourse. Which they did, but it's mostly negative, opposing discourse! Are you actually seeing Lara and Mari's relationship as something oppressive for them? Why? Nothing, and I mean NOTHING in the show hinted at conflicts or dislikes between them or their life together. In fact, multiple times the anime showed how happy they were living together, chatting on the balcony in the evening, talking before going to bed. Hanging out simply, spending time together. They loved being with each other. So what makes you think that Lara was an emotional support pet? Have you ever been in a relationship? Helping each other, supporting each other in times of need is the very basis of a healthy relationship and nowhere did Lara think differently about that. No, I'm still of my opinion. The ending was forced, dumbed and narratively absolutely incoherent. If you liked it, more power to you, but know what you're the minority and THAT doesn't make you better, just different.
>>291274308You didn't, this is a Lara thread now.
>>291274556bro, you keep hyper fixating on balcony chats and bedtime conversations while completely erasing the actual premise of the show, did you miss the entire part where Lara is a mythical mermaid princess with potentially centuries of history tied up to an ancient curse, with an entire civilization demanding she produces "true love" so that its light saves their species? hanging out comfortably in Mari's house doesn't magically resolve a massive existential identity crisiscalling her move to another city "shock value to generate discourse" is just crazy to me, it felt like an existential fairy tale with so many different characters pulling Lara in different directions, wishing she did the ONE thing they wanted out of her, as she was left stunned barely understanding what was even going on and overwhelmed by the modern day society, she knows next to nothing about the "current" world, to me it felt perfectly coherent that she would've wanted to actually develop an identity of her own first rather than diving head first into any relationshipidk man it seems to me that people focused way too hard on certain aspects of the show, while just ignoring a LOT of things it sets up to support the decision Lara makes in the end, but you know what if deleting those last 5 minutes make you feel better than go right ahead I guess, at least you're not a full on giga hater of the show like I've seen in the meltdown threads when the finale happened
they really should've not focused on plot after episode 7, inako and kihachi building stuff and roaming throughout kyoto is what the show should've been about. there was no time to develop their relationship at all, the end cut where he imagines her as his wife was cute but there is nothing behind it.
>>291274702Well, the thing is, those balcony scenes, and moments of them living together, are an integral part of this anime. They are there for a reason, to show how happy they are together. And, again, Lara having an oppressive backstory doesn't have necessarily a negative impact on her relationship with Mari.If anything, I would argue that a normal, simple life with Mari would even benefit Lara. Mari doesn't ask anything of Lara, she's simply happy being with her.Moving to another city implies further issue too: for someone "not used" to this modern world, wouldn't it be dangerous to embark on such a journey alone? Meeting people who might hurt her, swindle her? Without anyone to rely on?I would accept Lara going "I want to become independent and autonomous, I don't want to rely on you forever, Mari, but I will be back".The issue is, she didn't say anything. Why? The writer clearly wanted some shock value, some mystery, but that ruined her character to me. Why wouldn't she tell Mari what she felt? It seemed out of character even. And, in the end, we're still debating now precisely because for many that ending didn't make sense.

>>291274413>stays a loser till the endwho likes him?
>>291274270Except Lara leaving and being independent was never something developed in the story. That's not what it was about. In the first place, growing as a person doesn't require you to move away from the one you love. That's a ridiculous mindset. It's far more fulfilling to grow together and make each other better people. That's what they were doing before. You say their relationship is codependency and Lara freeloading but that's blatantly wrong and insulting towards the relationship they developed throughout the show. Lara got a job and was paying rent. She did that with Mari.>also in the final sequence, to me Lara doesn’t act cold because she doesn’t care, she acts restrained because a dramatic, tearful goodbye with promises of "I'll come back in X years" would only trap Mari in emotional limbo, waiting on someone else's timelineSure you can interpret it like that if you want, but you can interpret it however you want because it was so vague and Lara doesn't explain anything. She doesn't need to say "I'll come back in X years." Just "I'll come back when I'm a more complete person" would've sufficed.

The sound of the train cutting across the tracks accentuates the rift between human daily life and the reality of the mermaids.nah bros I guess I'm just retarded yeah, I'm just coming up with my own head canon, totally nothing was done in the story to imply anything, it was all about a wholesome relationship with Lara and Mari, yep yep, totally, 100%

KyoAni's new works sucked after 2013 I'm sorry to say. Only follow-ups to old works before that year were good. And S1 of Dragon Maid was just a miracle.
