I know it's verboten, but I've never really liked Toriyama's style.
>>291305125he's sorta just okay outside of vehicle art
>>291305125he got really sloppy towards the end of DBZ and by the 21st century his art had evolved into a really ugly direction where everyone is a weird noddle monster wearing one of the same three outfits.
>>291305243I agree, he seemed way more in the zone when it came to machines and monsters. To a point, at least.
>>291305125Agreed.
>>291305243This is it. Nice machines, mediocre everything else. At least he's not Oda.
>>291305125the guy basically peaked in the mid 80s, i think he got tired of drawing the same characters over and over.
>>291306650his later stuff isn't bad either, he just wanted easy to draw human art.
>>291305125Yeah, he kinda only ever learned how to draw a small handful of faces and just rotated through them for every character.
>>291306221his monsters were always on point.
>>291305125Toriyama is at least a dozen different styles. You're gonna have to be more specific.>>291306708The detail is too oversimplified and blocky by the end.
>>291305125You've never played Chrono Trigger and it shows.
>>291305125Toriyamas style was really good during Slump and the real Dragon Ball run, but even though it looks simple, it's difficult to replicate properly, as can be seen by that art you posted, especially if the designs were not made with Toriyamas style in mind.
>>291305125I love his style in Dr. Slump but I never liked it in Dragonball much. Dragon Quest is hit or miss
>>291311100>Toriyama is at least a dozen different styles>every single face looks the same
>>291305125For me it roughlyVehicle art = tech stuff art > creature art >>>> character artHis character art is a bit hit or miss for me. As long as he draws things more on the comedic cute side, they look mostly good. His "Badass designs" are hit or miss, with one of the more prominent offenders being the look of his super sayajins. His art in Dr. Slump was a cool fit, DB, before the DBZ part, was ok as well, his DQ stuff is hit or miss, like others said.
>>291305125He was very good at drawing scenery, machines and monsters but mediocre at drawing characters, especially faces/heads.
I liked the early Dragon Ball when his art was "round", it later became "sharp", don't know if I'm making sense.
>>291309662Robo is easily the coolest character he designed imo. Especially in this concept art where he's just so much bigger than anybody else while not being intimidatingly immense, really gives the air of being a battle robot but still a good guy.
He was a poor man's Yamamoto that, unlike Yamamoto, didn't have the balls to draw what he wanted to draw, he was okay at mechanical designs but paled compared to most other mangaka in the same niche, let alone professional mech designers of his generation. In his defense people also largely overstate his sameface problem, the truth is that Toriyama was just not very interested in drawing people and was also pigeonholed by Jump in a niche he despised, he was always a gag mangaka at heart and was "forced" to draw action shonen because it sold really well and he was a lot more interested in making money (and evading taxes) than anything else, which makes him a pretty questionable artist in hindsight. But really, Yamamoto had a similar style and one ups him in pretty much everything and especially mechanical design, his good friend Masakazu Katsura was also a much better artist.
I don't believe Toriyama has a same face style other wise Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan would team up from Buu Saga to Super instead of their individual personalities clashing, or Goku, Gohan, Trunks and Vegeta would team up in GT. Dragonball's problem is that humans have same face but never bother to team up. Toriyama got popular because he needed to be wrangled by his first and second editor into making good art.
Sand Land style was great.
>>291305125me neither. his mecha designs look nice though
>>291312513That's specifically his women. The guys are more varied.
>>291315088>picLooks like shit.
>>291315997t. pablo
>>291313941It looked best when he started ditching the fat chibi style before it got super sharp, more or less from the 22nd tournament until 19/20.>>291315088It's not so much in his manga themselves but his machines in external art looked really good.
>>291316054This is okay-ish
>>291315960Toriyama said that battle manga made him simplify the design so that the action can get forced meaning women can look the same. That's why Freiza has two copies of Goku at 30k and 10k, and 1k. He doesn't care for human drama
>>291316288>That's why Freiza has two copies of Goku at 30k and 10k, and 1k.
>>291316316Freiza is one of the few villains who doesn't execute his henchmen unless he has good reasons to. Early Dragonball villains will execute you for any failure which is why Z gets focus.
>>291316285Yamamoto is more than okay-ish, he was one of the best and most prolific mangaka of his generation. It's not a coincidence that he also helped out other great mangaka of his generation, he was the one who designed all the mechanical stuff in Urusei Yatsura for Rumiko for instance, he's old now and got a bit worse with the jump to digital but in his golden years his manga were some of the best looking stuff in business.
>>291316444I'm not impressed. It's alright though.
>>291316576Must suck being a butthurt contrarian
>>291316730I wouldn't know.
>>291316730This is bad and anons missed the point that Toriyama is very simple to draw due to the breakneck pacing
