In this comment he implicitly admits two things: first, that the side characters have been completely useless up to this point; and second, that he himself had no idea what he was writing. It went from “life is a game,” to poems, and now suddenly to “the essence of human values,” which, by the way, are completely nonexistent in this series.

And from here on, this is probably just an afterthought, but...

The next volume will be the final one, but there is a possibility that I might release one more volume or so, perhaps something like an after story.

“What does that even mean?” you might be wondering, so let me elaborate a little... (A rare occurrence.)

There are little interlude stories for each character, what happens afterward to characters other than Tomozaki and Hinami, their future paths, and so on. As long as there are characters and stories I want to write about, the story could keep going. And when it comes to what happens to everyone other than Tomozaki and Hinami as well, I feel there is still a lot left that I haven't fully depicted.

There were times when I wondered whether perhaps the right thing to do would be to write all of that out before bringing the series to an end.

If I wanted to keep writing, I could have chosen not to make Volume 12 the final volume and instead continued the series with numbered volumes, 13, 14, and so on. I believe Shogakukan would have allowed me to do that, too.

However, I feel that with a novel, where you choose to say “this is the end” determines what everything that came before it ultimately meant as a story.

And while Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki has made use of the cuteness of its characters, the broad appeal of the rom-com genre, and the familiarity of games as its motif, I believe that all along, it has ultimately been a story about something at the very heart of people's values, something that could be called a fundamental truth.

And when it comes to that something, I believe I have arrived at my own answer in Volume 12.

If that's the case, then rather than dragging out the ending because there are still things I should write about the other characters... because everyone will feel lonely when it ends... because I'm afraid of no longer being in the midst of an ongoing series that's being adapted into an anime... I felt that deciding that this is where the story ends is what is right for this series, and what I want to show to all of you who have followed the series this far.

And so, I have chosen to call it the final volume.

With that said, I would be happy if you all would see this series, which has continued for over ten years, through to the very end!!!

Everything I've thought about, I've left in Volume 12!!!!

Let me remind you that there are subplots that don’t even get resolved, and characters who are completely useless, like Nakamura, Takei, Tsugumi, and Yuzu
