Something has always confused me a bit about the Yu-Gi-Oh canon: Does Kaiba believe in magic or not? Because in the dub it feels like he doesn't but I feel like that has to be a dub invention, he'd need to be lying to himself about his own memories to act like he didn't spend years dealing with magic stuff (Granted I think the entire manga takes place in their senior year of high school or something)

He believes in it enough to seek the thrill of recreating his shadow game against Yami during the whole kaibaland arc.

He knows magic shit is going on but prefers modern/bleeding edge tech.

Yugioh is a gateway anime. You gotta start somewhere.

When we had the manga read through I'm pretty sure he still doesn't believe and also the dub of the DSOD movie also continues this so yeah I think it's always been part of his character. I always liked it. You think it's just for comedic scenes but even during battles he doesn't believe.

I liked it back when I was a kid man.

God, what I wouldn’t give for a manga-accurate anime…

The dub says he doesn't. The manga says he does but doesn't give a fuck about it, the shit he really denies is destiny and fate. He hates the idea of everything being pre-determined or set in stone

there are two different canons, manga and anine. in the manga canon he seems indifferent to its existence but he abhors the idea of a predetermined future and prophecy. in the anime canon he eventually comes around of the concept of duel spirits being real at the minimum by the time GX starts.

The Latin American dub, despite being based on the 4Kids version instead of the original Japanese one, is actually pretty good. Not only do the voices fit the characters really well, especially Irwin Daayán as Yugi/Atem and Ricardo Mendoza as Kaiba, but the delivery is also much more serious, somehow feeling closer to the original intent.

I haven't watched the anime in ages, but in the manga Kaiba acknmowledges the existance of magic, but he doesn't care much about the mysticism and would rather focus on science

The entire hologram system they use for duels was made by Kaiba to show Yugi that anything he does with magic he can do it with science

Dub: no.

Original: yeah, he just doesn’t give a fuck.

In the end, he accepted the existence of magic but ultimately decided that technology is superior. This is the guy who makes an space elevator to his moon base just to solve a puzzle and a jet that can go into the fucking afterlife and back.

And shot a card game into outer space so aliens can play it.
