The majority of people he kills he does with fire magic, actually.

Honestly I think 9/10 times, maybe 8/10 times they probably could have made it through the labyrinth without losing anyone. They didn't make any big mistakes aside from Paul rushing in too much early on. Even having a slightly different party probably would have solved things. It really just came down slightly to bad luck at the end that the hydra made one last desperate attack they weren't ready for. Which is why the entire thing is a tragedy in the first place. For something to be a proper tragedy it would have to be avoidable, and usually only occurs due to a character flaw. It needs to be something that didn't "need to happen" but happened anyway due to a single mistake.
