Demon Slayer really fumbled its main cast by focusing on the Hashirama over the actual main characters.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Nezuko and Kanao are supposed to be the characters we spend the most time with, yet the Hashira get the better backstories, relationships, conflicts and emotional payoffs.

Tanjiro barely changes as a person. Zenitsu and Inosuke get most of their development in short bursts between comedy and fights. Nezuko is literally the reason the story happens and still has almost no agency or inner characterization. Kanao has an interesting setup but her development and relationship with Tanjiro are rushed.

Meanwhile Sanemi gets an entire emotional storyline with Genya, Giyu gets survivor's guilt and Sabito, Shinobu gets her relationship with Kanae and revenge against Doma, Muichiro gets a whole character arc, etc.

By the final arc, the Hashira are getting all these big emotional conclusions while the main cast mostly gets fights.

Pretty much all the screentime and development the Hashira got should gone to the actual main characters.

It's honestly weird finishing a manga about Tanjiro and his friends and feeling like I understand Sanemi, Giyu or Rengoku more than I understand the actual main characters.

I disagree. It's refreshing and relatively unique for the stated "strongest" mentor characters to actually be stronger and more effective than the main characters, instead of simply jobbers that fail to accomplish anything.

Demon Slayer goes too far with it. The main characters are so outclassed that they have no reason to be there.

Unique doesn't mean good and the Hashira ARE jobbers

They're still important and contribute to fights.

>the Hashira ARE jobbers
Their contributions are fairly simple to trace and they were all needed at various points.

It really is Bleach 2.0
The Captains are way more popular than the main characters, and no one genuinely gives a shit about the main cast like Chad/Renji/Uryu

Who it's made for does not affect how a story is written. Being for kids isn't an excuse for poor writing and underdeveloped characters.

Zenitsu and Inosuke are honestly not that great as characters, and their dynamics with Tanjiro feel one-sided and forced. I think the series would have benefited if the mangaka had turned these two into Pillars and made the asshole guy with guns and Shinobu's apprentice into Tanjiro's companions instead.

Be honest, there are shows where you wish they'd focus more on the side characters than the boring MC
