Why do people like watching side characters fight? There's no tension or stakes in any fight that doesn't involve a main character because the winner doesn't matter, the plot continues either way.
>>291355981Actually, I prefer fights involving side characters.
you're watching shounen, none of it matters
>>291356043nothing matters at all in any genre. hell, nothing matters in life; just end yours already.
>>291356043Fights =/= shounen
>>291355981Plot can continue even if a main character dies, what's your point?
>>291355981Because the MC usually sucks and has the personality of a grape fruit. Frankly if you're watching shounen BECAUSE of the main character you're probably on the short bus.
>>291356200The MC is always the one with the most effort put into their writing, and the one that every other character revolves around.
>>291356240The MC will typically contribute nothing, have everyone tell him he's special and then only win because he thought of his friends.
>>291356255That's not true of any shonen, the issue with shonen is always that the side characters never contribute anything, only the main character ever does anything.
>>291355981I like fights? The protagonist fighting is bad because it advances the plot, meaning, less overall fights.
>>291356265it's a combination of the two. The MC will be the only who ever gets to do anything but he'll also somehow remain boring as sin all the way through with no real personality. And as bad as he is he'll still be way better than the walking dial tone that's the main heroine.
>>291356338Fights don't have value in and of themselves, they're only worthwhile if they're important to and advance the plot.
>>291356349Naruto solved this issue by having two MCs with equal screentime and importance and no heroine
>>291356078action as a genre is inherently for children
>>291355981By that logic the main character has even less stakes because the series is over is too big a stake.
>>291355981Because sometimes the MC is a jobbing face down, ass up, bottom bitch.
>>291356421No, it's not.
>>291356426The main character's fights matter because they are advance the plot and the characters they fight exist beyond giving them someone to fight.Side characters on the other hand, almost always get fed jobbers that only exist to create the illusion that they did something useful.
>>291356363I hard disagree, especially if the choreography is good. If we are including anime, a good animation makes up for it too.
>>291356200>>291356240>>291356255Good Shonen series will end up having the MC as the best character, or one of the best characters. Bad Shonen series will end up with the MC being boring and feeling like getting the final fights or winning hits is token instead of warranted.
>>291355981There could be some tension or stakes if the side character winning would prevent the main character from being outnumbered later, or if they can fulfill a goal that the MC cannot. However, Shonen series that focus on several side character fights typically just have a fight that feels like padding with no greater purpose and that the MC would win regardless of numbers against them (or if the Shonen is especially bad, the MC would lose anyway but the plot contrives to make sure they win).
>>291355981If anything it's fights involving the main character that don't matter, because there's only one way they can end.
