How did Dragon Ball's supporting cast avoid the slander that modern shonen casts get? I.E. Piccolo is an aura farming bum that accomplishes absolutely nothing in Z, but people love him anyway. Gohan was the original Potential Man, but people still like him.

Power creep hurt the series as it kept going.Hell, look at the buu saga episodes with Gohan's slice of life stuff at school. It's not hard to see that this is what Toriyama actually wanted to do, it's where his comedy shined better, but he was stuck with the action packed...thing DBZ turned into. Past a certain point, the Buu saga was more about telling fights than any interesting story.
