Exorcist manga are funny because the formula works perfectly at first. You don't need to give anyone actual character motivations or goals when the enemies are just evil monsters eating people and blowing up villages. The protagonists can just be good guys who want to stop the bad guys. Simple. But then the series inevitably introduces intelligent demons with human emotions, tragic backstories, political agendas, and philosophical disagreements, and suddenly the protagonists need to be more than walking embodiments of justice. Now they're supposed to have meaningful ideological conflicts with the villains, except the protagonists themselves have no ideology beyond "killing people is bad and demons are evil."You can't have a compelling conflict of worldviews when one side has a worldview and the other side has a shonen protagonist's default settings. The villains become more complex, but the heroes don't.

>>291372775I love how Kitaro strikes a balance between "humans are bad" and "yokai have gone too far with their revenge" It’s like defending a friend. You admit he fucked up, but you still stand up for him because he’s your friend
