I get it like:
Champ is shallow, cant self reflect (one of the reasons he is still a slave) and thinks people are malicious if they dont listen to him and are below him.
So typical narcissist who plays the good role (which probably developed by being the number 1 player in the game and Boasting about it when he arrived)

It is funny that Baku is genuinely struggling to deal with Champ, and had to provoke Champ in order to wake up his greed and make him an opponent he can read and counter properly. The mentality of Champ who is meekly trying to do what he thinks is right but not necessarily trying to win must seem very alien to a gambler like Baku who is always thinking about how to win.

in gambling manga, how does the protagonist always know the exact moment to change his strategy?
it happens very often, even in "rational" works
I don't buy the "oh but he's really good at psychology" justification, it doesn't explain anything and you could apply it to literally every move
>>
>>291427599
>I don't buy the "oh but he's really good at psychology" justification
Ok, then there's nothing to tell you because you already disqualified the explanation the story gave.
>>
>>291427599
Here it's just Baku reading the room really well, that's all there is to it.
He wouldn't have done this if Champ didn't pretty much lay it out for him.

In this case Baku knows they're going all in too, and that they're prone to teaming up. It's not too unusual to think:
>They must have some sort of a sure-win strategy
>However, such a strategy requires that they know my moves..
>Champ 'leaks' me their moves to nudge my playing, giving me the perfect knowledge that they will most likely turn in the one direction I 'won't' use.

The whole sequence is perfectly rational.

>Here it's just Baku reading the room really well, that's all there is to it.
this always feel like a cop-out
the author spends all this time setting up elaborate deduction chains, only to end up with "oh and he's a psychic"

I understand that the MC can infer that it's likely the opponents will change their strategy
but where such manga stumbles is making the jump from "likely" to "certain"
you might say that the "situation + reading the room" is enough of an explanation, but for me it's not
this crucial final deduction of when to act is the most important and most difficult part, so papering over it with "he's just that good" is cheating
>>
>>291427800
That's the point of a gamble, you can never know for sure. It's very likely that they will given that they're in debt and this is the last chance (game ends after) so they're insanely desperate for a guaranteed win.

Once again, Baku would probably have played like normal if Champ didn't attempt to manipulate him. That's the glue that puts it all together. Sure, it's all conjecture in a sense, but how could you possibly know for sure in a situation like this? Besides, why WOULDN'T he do it anyway? Like, he has no reason NOT to point that direction.
>>
>>291427800
It's setup perfectly in ToK, Baku has spent his whole life reading people and unless you are an actual soulless golem like Suteguma you will always leak some information to him with your bodylanguage and words.
It also helps that Baku made all the moves to force them into this position.
>>
>>291427659
>>291427874
More importantly, Baku goaded Champ into getting taking the risk of an all or nothing bet. Baku wasn't just giving Champ life lessons out of the goodness of his heart, you know.
>>
>>291427479
Yup. Sought to deal with criminality wherever legality couldn't reach, only for his creation to be used by the very people it was supposed to destroy
>>
>>291427874
>Besides, why WOULDN'T he do it anyway? Like, he has no reason NOT to point that direction.
because he had been deliberately avoiding that direction
so a deviation from this strategy is a specific choice

look, I get what you're saying
but my point is it's a change in storytelling
95% of the competition is game theory shit
only at the end it's suddenly armchair psychology
I understand why the authors do it, it's because coming up with a "scientific" strategy is hard
but then in my eye they lose points for having pretended it's a manga about clever strategies
>>
>>291428063
>because he had been deliberately avoiding that direction

That's not true, in the first round he hadn't pointed up or down, which could be deliberate or chance.
>>291416862

In that sense he's actually following his earlier 'strategy' of left or right too, so even by your own admission you would be mistaken.

Usogui has been an over the top manga about borderline wizards from the very inception. If we were discussing Liar Game or similar I could kind of see where you're coming from, but here it's just part of the fun.
>>
>>291427599
>the protagonist always knows the exact moment to change his strategy
You are retarded. Baku antagonised the tribalist Tipa slaves, dominated them in Look the Other Way, then paid back his 200 Bios loan to equalise his total Bios and the total Bios of the Tipa slaves. All this was to bait them into trying to eliminate him in one fell swoop (to prevent escape in case they tried to do it gradually) and take every last Bios. Champs attempt to obfuscate this plan to better its odds of succeeding (claim that the Tipa slaves are divided into two groups while nudging Baku to choose a direction other than right) was the final piece of the puzzle, as it not only proved that Bakus bait was successful, it even informed him of what their strategy to pass through the first round was. From there it's just simple counterplay to the situation he manipulated

Pretty much, almost everyone important in Usogui is superhuman in either strength or intelligence. The only normal person is Kaji and he goes from a sucker to becoming a genius by the end. Baku is pretty much the perfect fantasy version of a gambler, the fun in Usogui comes from trying to guess how he’ll expose his opponent or what big brain strategy he’ll use. To be fair, there’s this level of excitement in other gambling manga like Kaiji but there’s a different type of chaos in them. Kaiji is more normal with flaws like being naive and impulsive, they bring about his downfall multiple times. He’s more closer to the reality of what a real gambling addict is, a self destructive loser

You don't really have a point, just a personal inclination.

Personal gambles rely heavily on reading the opponent and making bets based on how you feel like they will act. For example, it's a strategy to throw paper first in RPS because there's a statistically significant chance for people to throw rock first. That's both a strategy and "armchair psychology".

How would you, for example, write a manga about gambling with people but then strip away the personal layer? What's the point? One of the most interesting parts of Usogui is how there's a meta sense going out throughout the series: it's not just about winning or losing, but the setting of the gamble, why it's done, the stakeholders, the logistics.. It's very cerebral in a way that's beyond just "I haff system I count da cards".
>>
>>291428380 (me)
I forgot to add, Baku also got to see that the Tipa slaves had bet all their Bios, which was a major indicator of their teamwork as well
>>
>>291428063
Baku's used psychology throughout the whole match to get to the final point.
He's the first one to get loan when they're still wary, dangling the chance to win big.
He advised Champ, the guy the others all respect a little, to look at other people properly.
He broke the safe strat by showing how he can just circulate their funds and individually bankrupting people so long as he's the banker. Destroying Ryuusei's ego also helps.

All his actions push them into "you all are not going to win anything worthwhile if you don't unite", Champ's amateurish attempt at a plot just seal the deal.
>>
>>291428246
Ohmaigah... It's perfection. Thank you anon
>>
>>291427800
>Oh and he's psychic
Hardly ever the case with Baku though, what he did here was essentially the oldest trick in the book, absolute mind game tier nonsense. The motion of the page implies Baku turned his full body one way and then his hand the other way, where the rules say only the hand counts.

After misdirecting them and pointing out their flaw, he overwhelmed their mental stack so they were easy to manipulate. Sako just decided it would be good to end it here and did that stylish spread instead of drawing it out. I think there a few more than a few cases were Baku displays borderline ESP but imo this gamble is too simple to require Jojo tier 400 IQ leaps in logic. You have to understand everyone not Baku in that room is basically a small fish in a big pond, else they wouldn't be slaves
>>
>>291426968
>>291427008
Every gamble has so many funky and unexpected layers to them that I do wonder how he managed to come up with them, it's more imaginative than most video game designers
>>
>>291428422
No anon, think about how much more Usogui there is left for "myselfs" to experience
>>
>>291428373
>>291428460
Two things can be true at once, Usogui's enemy's thumb could be augmented, Baku could be a 500 IQ wizard, etc, but also the manga's logic is internally consistent and it's not like these characters have the break their own logic to keep going with the games. For such a low level game after the insanity that is ToK it's only natural to expect Baku to be in control the entire time

>How would you, for example, write a manga about gambling with people but then strip away the personal layer?
that's not what I'm saying
personal layer is an important part, both in a story and in real life
what I'm saying is that it is usually not precise enough to make the call to flip your strat on move 6 vs move 7

I don't know how I would write it
I wouldn't take out psychology
I guess I would make it so you, the reader, can make a prediction before, not only a justification after
and I would also make clear that sometimes, you get a read wrong and you lose
or even do everything right and still lose, because of the element of chance
that if anything is the nature of gambling
>>
>>291427599
>Baku antagonizes everyone by gaining a clear lead. He has as much bios as everybody else combined without factoring in debt (with debt, their sum total would be in the negatives) If they don't take him out immediately, he is going to utterly steamroll everybody
>Baku destroyed their safe strat option, letting them know that they have to play to win even if it means to take big risks and "safe" plays are useless against him
>Everybody goes all in, something is clearly going on behind the scenes for slaves that will worship even a single bios
>Champ goes up to him and tells him, "some of us are going to play up/down, the rest of us are going to play left, whatever you do, don't pick right, only a fool picks right nudge nudge, absolutely none of us will pick right, why would I ever lie to you, stick to the plan and don't pick right pretty please I am begging you, YOU WILL NOT PICK RIGHT"
Why would he not change his strategy? This entire arc has been building up to this exact moment. What reason would he have to believe his word in what is likely the most telegraphed gamble in the story (at least so far)?

I'll attempt a TL for the first panel of the left page, the current TL seems to have glued a sentence fragment to the wrong sentence and it makes it confusing.

>You seem like a good guy at first glance
>But
>In truth you're just very sensitive to others suspecting you of ill intentions. Does behaving this way...
>really make your life any better?

So basically, Champ is doing what he does because he doesn't want to be perceived as a bad person.
>>
>>291432473
I think they understood it and just worded it clumsily.

>You're very sensitive to the feeling of 'is he (champ) being malicious towards me (the 他人 putting out this feeling)'". They did a lot of work to try and keep it super literal but yeah it just reads really bad. I think the whole "when someone does something that feels like it" is just them trying to keep the って事 when you just don't need that in English.
>>
>>291430400
>and I would also make clear that sometimes, you get a read wrong and you lose
>or even do everything right and still lose, because of the element of chance
>that if anything is the nature of gambling

Both of these things will happen and have happened quite a lot already.
You really should start reading from chapter 1 before you start commenting in a storytime.
>>
>>291428063
At this stage of the manga it's well established that Baku's ability to read people and determine lies is basically on the level of a superpower, and none of these slaves are skilled gamblers so we can assume that Baku can see through them pretty easily. It's not satisfying that there is no real explanation for how Baku manages to guess the correct direction with 1 in 4 odds even though this is supposed to be the climax of the gamble, but eh, it's a minor arc and I think it's just meant to show Baku dabbing on low level mobs for a bit.
>>
>>291432830
