Getting a nice cloth to cover the whole background is a good idea, dark ones give better results in my experience, and of course use something you don't mind throwing into the washing machine very often, and then just keep trying from different positions and angles, watch a video you like and try to recreate it, etc. I don't think a tripod is necessary if your phone has good stability using random objects you can find but it's not a bad investment, you can use it to take normal pics of your collection as well.
