In terms of raw storytelling potential, Time Travel > Cyberpunk > Mecha
You cannot prove this wrong.
>>
>potential
I don't care what an egg might have grown up into when you serve it to me for breakfast.
What I get is the egg, not its supposed potential.

And if you can't cook eggs, then stop excusing yourself with the low limit of chicken biology.

>Time Travel

It's fucking STUPID unless it's done right

You need to adjust for the planet 's FUCKING PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE OR YOU'RE ENDING UP AS A LOST DUST IN SPACE!!

Stein's;Gate only works because he's SENDING RADIO WAVES which might be taking hundreds of years to connect to him.

FUCK! None of you are prepared for the fact that we might have had thousands, if not millions, of time travels across out own timeline; BUT THEY'RE CORPSES FLOATING IN SPACE BECAUSE NO ONE FUCKING THINKS ABOUT THE EARTH'S PLACE WHEN JUMPING!!
>>
>>291595159
i reckon if one could time travel one could predict their future location. moreover, why are we pretending newton's second law stopped working? An object in otion will stay in motion, the action of time travel, travel in the fourth dimension doesn't need to set the speed through spatial dimensions to 0, in fact for relativity, u would need infinite speed. also 0 relative to what? being at 0 velocity relative to earth means that when u travel in time the earth will still be providing a normal force that keeps u in place.
>>
>>291595228
You're not accounting for gravitational space altering the flow of time from black holes.
>>
>>291594948
Time travel is retarded by its very nature
>>
The opposite actually. Time travel is overdone. I roll my eyes any time I see it anymore. Cyberpunk hasn't been interesting since the 80s. Everything is basically the same. Mecha is pretty general and there's a lot more variety in it than in the other two.
>>
>>291594948
Time travel is retarded by nature.
>HURR DURR I GET UNLIMITED TRIES TO FIX MY SHIT
Easily the worst trope in storytelling.
>>
>>291595159
>You need to adjust for the planet 's FUCKING PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
The universe does not have a unified coordinate system.
Saying that something is "moving" is only true if you have already chosen a frame work to anchor your coordinate system in. (there are some asterisks to this, but let's keep it simple for now)
Usually, we use Earth for the purpose, simply because we already use it to anchor our movements. Every step we take, is in direct interaction with the ground. Same for cars with their wheels.

But if that frame work no longer holds for time travel - and I don't think that's self evident - then you would have to explain, with proper reasoning, what frame work does. Otherwise, you may just as easily argue that Earth is going at thousands of miles per hour in one direction, as another may claim that it is going by tens of thousands of miles per hour in another.
Or, in other words, without a framework, you've got nothing of value to say regarding a body's motion through space.
>>
Time Travel is 3rd. The stories are never as fulfilling as mecha or cyberpunk
>>
>>291594948
This is a really retarded way of compartmentalizing this sort of stuff
>>
>>291595228
if you're orbiting the sun clockwise and go back in time, from your frame of reference the earth has started orbiting counter-clockwise while you retain all your clockwise momentum and get flung off into deep space
>>
>>291594948
What is even this classification? A story can be time travel, cyberpunk and mecha all at the same time.
>>
>>291594948
ALL garbage, good job
>>
>>291595631
Not only are you getting flung into deep space, you are also in a different location from where the Earth was/will-be with.

Also, if you have achieved time travel; it is likely that you have gone faster than light. That would insinuate mass that inverts back into light into negative space. Potentially being trapped in a light/dark plane where only things with mass would act as air pockets where otherwise being trapped in the Mud of Space.

Anime in general is not very good at creating good science fiction. You'd even be better of watching Hollywood shit most of the time.

You don't pick time travel or mecha if you want good science fiction.
These themes are science fantasy, and you should already know that.

You keep making this shit thread either to farm (You)s or to try in futility to convince other people of your shit opinion without success. Time Travel is crap in 99% of the shit its implemented in.

It's the weakest of the three not least because of the genre it's in. That's why I don't get OP's point, who cares about potential when it never gets fulfilled?

It's crazy how ignorant people are that they easily dismiss a whole genre out of hand.

>>291595334
You don't get it.
>>
>>291594948
This isn't a fair comparison because time travel is a TYPE of story, while cyberpunk and mecha are both settings. You could have time traveling cyberpunk mechas, none of those are mutually exclusive and the latter two are just environments where a story can take place. For example take something like Code Geass, it's a Mecha but like it or not it goes in wildly different directions than many other mecha stories. Therefore, really both cyberpunk and mecha have more potential due to being able to put any type of story on top of them, whereas time travel is restricted to one story type but any setting. And between mecha and cyberpunk, mecha probably has more potential because it's less defined and you could vary the setting more while cyberpunk is a more narrowly defined setting
>>
>>291594948
You can have all three.
>>
>>291594948
I disliked Steins;Gate quite a bit and I really question how much potential that kind of story can have when time travel is an inherently consequence removing type of story.

>>
>>291597940
>Are there any series like that?
Seems like the answer is no but maybe you could find a series with them as fringe or one off episode gimmicks that don't overlap.
Although if you drop cyberpunk I feel like some degree of time fuckery comes up in a lot of mecha.
>>
>>291596321
>zero arguments
>f-filtered!1!!!!1
You're stuck in a loop consooming garbage. Grow up.
>>
It's funny because I think all three of those are pretty tired as story telling tropes.
Time travel can be good but it is rare that it is, cyberpunk usually recycles the same things over and over, most mecha show I have seen have been bad or the mecha part actually limited them
>>
>>291598367
>cyberpunk and mecha are both settings
Cyberpunk is a genre which is defined by the rejection of earlier eras of sci-fi and by attempt to use sci-fi as contemporary social commentary rather than falsely "defining the future." William Gibson's short story "The Gernsback Continuum" serves as a sort of manifesto in that regard, which makes it all the more amusing that Neuromancer has had such an immense influence on culture and perceptions of emerging technologies. Classic cyberpunk literature spans a vast array of settings from modern day to so post-apocalyptic that there's just psychic mutants with primitive tech and not enough civilization for corporations to exist.

>>
>>291601969
I was thinking maybe the Getter Robo manga as a whole fits the bill since the series was primarily a mecha story that gets progressively more sophisticated, and does feature bona-fide time travel, but whether or not it also counts as Cyberpunk depends on if you consider the presence of cyborgs and human social decay as enough, or if it must also have the genre's aesthetics and focus on the dystopian society aspects to qualify. Then there's Blame! Which is obviously a genre defining Cyberpunk story, but also featured some instances of time travel (of the time dilation kind) as part of the world but wasn't really central to the story, and in its case the iffy genre would be mecha, because although there's tons of them and are vital to the setting, none are main characters, as said characters are better described as cyborgs who don't really rely on mechas for survival or fighting.
>>
>>291606336
No it's not, only redditfags who started watching in 2010 think this.
>>
>>291606336
Steins;Gate doesn't even compare to the others. GitS is a series with genuine depth and an all time great, and Gundam for its part has more to it than one would first think. Steins;Gate at its best is just the most shallow of thrillers possible, complete surface level in every way.
>>
>>291606989
Nobody cares about your supposed depth, this sounds extremely pretentious.
>>
>>291594948
Is there like a whole genre of time-travel anime i'm not aware of?
>>
>>291607030
Or maybe you just value trite time travel thrills like what you find from SG over anything with actual themes in it.
>>
>>291594948
None of these are relevant to the storytelling potential. Case in point, mecha can either be an involved space opera with multiple characters living out their daily lives and overcoming harsh difficulties to mature, or it can be a 52-episode tournament arc. Gundam has had both.

The relevant parts of a story aren't related to what sort of paint gets applied to the outside.
>>
>>291607327
No, nor there should be one bec "time travel" isn't a genre or a setting, it's a plot device. It's not even proper science fiction most of the time. That's why you can have a romance story with time travel, war stories with time travel, comedies with time travel etc. You wouldn't say groundhog day is scifi, would you? While we're on the subject, mecha isn't a genre either, unless you narrowly define "Mecha" as just android shaped robots that may or may not fight and may or may not be gigantic.

I used to and it's still a term mostly used to shitpost, but I've come to realize it's a useful shorthand descriptor in some cases. >>

>>
>>291594948
Mecha limit your story the least, you can write whatever you please, have mechs in it and it's a mecha series.
Time travel is a plot device and cyberpunk is a very vague setting.
In terms of limiting your story, time travel is the worst because it essentially dictate the whole plot for you, then there is cyberpunk because it require certain level of technology in the setting, then you have mecha because unlike cyberpunk you can set your mecha show at any technological level because even medieval peasants using wood, iron and rope to power to siege beasts would be a mecha.
So you actually have it the wrong way around Mecha > Cyberpunk > Time Travel.
