In reality though they have no love for him, Mamimi is using him as a replacement for his older brother and Haruko is using him to get closer to Atomsk (who is symbolically his older brother through the TV guy). Naota's dad is both neglectful as well as behaves carelessly sexual around Naota. Fooly Cooly is just sex. The show's confusing nature reflects how confusing sex is to a child and how confused Naota is because of the sexual abuse he faces at the hands of multiple women. Throughout the whole show he's trying to force himself to be an adult to compensate for experiencing adult things that he shouldn't be. Trying to be more like his older brother when he's scared, forcing himself to drink sour drinks even though in both the first and last episode we know he doesn't like them. Haruko leaving him at the end is almost like an admission of her own guilt, she realizes he's just a kid and lets him be just a kid. He's matured enough to know that he's NOT mature by the end, as he stops hanging out with Mamimi and the last scene is him hanging out with Eri and his other age-appropriate friends, drinking a sour beverage and letting the audience know he still doesn't like it.FLCL is very meaningful and not difficult to understand its regularly dismissed as nonsense because people are dumb and stupid.
