I'm honestly shocked Delicious in Dungeon didn't reached the levels of popularity that Frieren did
It's too gimmicky, Frieren got popular by being extremely generic and boring.
It's not as good
>>291689009It got pretty close, I feel (and Google Trends agrees FWIW). Frieren and DM were 2 of the most popular series to cosplay at cons I went to in 2025.But it's true that Frieren had a sort of crossover appeal to the mainstream fan that DM didn't.
It actually have sexy characters in it so it's a no no for public approval

>>291689009because no one is ever going to say "delicious in dungeon"

>>291691043isnt the author a huge fan of western media like Life is Strange and Steven Universe and posted on tumblr? maybe thats why it appeals to Americans and not Japan
>>291689009it's too unserious (at the start)
>>291689009I'm glad it didn't. It still very clearly did well but you don't that kind of Frieren level popularity. It's just retarded casuals who treat whatever they're currently into at the moment like it was the greatest work of fiction ever made.
>>291691072Pretty much. The thing is that a lot of people are on this board in the first place because they don't like the things that appeal to typical westerners.

>>291691089I don't know why theres a general implication that Meshi wasn't popular in japan or something, back in 2023 it was with the top 20 of most manga sales charts and with the release of the anime it became one of Kadokawa's top earning IP's in 2024.

S1 of One Punch Man hit normies like crack hit Harlem they fucking LOVE nonchalant heroes casually obliterating unambiguously evil monsters. Just something about it makes them cream their shorts, I mean look how far Mashle has got. Dungeon Meshi is more like Mob Psycho 100, less broad appeal but well-put together and easier to judge after having concluded. Frieren being OPM is ambiguous it could go manga or webcomic.
>>291691827>can wank>goodVery funny.
>>291689009I hate to say this because it sounds pretentious, and part of what I like about Dungeon Meshi is how non-pretentious it is. But Dungeon Meshi is unironically too high IQ to appeal to normalfags like Frieren does.Frieren is aesthetically deep and intelligent. It explains its themes to you with all of the subtlety of a sledgehammer between the eyes. Characters make serious emotionless expressions as they stare wistfully off into the beautifully drawn landscape with their hair beautifully billowing in the wind at a high framerate. It's perfect for a midwit who wants to feel smart, but doesn't actually want to think too hard about what they're watching.Dungeon Meshi doesn't put on a front of being intelligent, it's just intelligently written and actively rewards you for thinking about it more and asking questions. Most questions about DM, whether it be about the world or characters, is probably answered in some piece of supplemental material, or at the very least the supplemental material gives you enough of a precedent to come up with a reasonable answer on your own.

>>291691883well... you're not wrong. frieren has that aesthetic and calmness that makes you think "oh, this is artistic" because it vaaaguely evokes stuff like ghilbi but only in the most superficial level. yes, it is pretty but that's really about it, the problem is that most people, even here, only understand "art" as a synonym for something beautiful, even if it says nothing, people have this idea that pretty things are inherently artistic.frieren is just part of that group of anime that appeals to the masses because it is familiar enough. "it looks like one of those pretty japanese movies and the setting is kinda like lord of the rings" that really is enough, and of course the characters have engaging dynamics fitting for the masses aswell. frieren is kinda like a grandma but also a child they have to take care of. will fern and stark be a thing? is frieren also in love with himmel? it simply hits many boxes, even though the check marks are as superficial as they get.dungeon meshi is "smart" simply because it was planned so naturally you have to pay attention. that's really about it, and that's enough for /a/nons to act like that's pretentious
the first several episodes felt extremely formulaic and became boring. people say it gets better but i'm not interested.
>>291692795It's true that one looks nice and the other is ugly.
>>291692795Yes. Just like a lot of TV. is the idea that people dont like to think when reading or watching shit foreign to people on this board?
>>291692611Sure, but it doesn't have a big fancy money shot of the MC looking sad and beating the audience over the head with the message while the soundtrack does all the lifting. It just, you know, tells a story.
>>291692795Can we just acknowledge the anime adaption of Frieren was really competent? There's beautiful scenery and composition, the cinematography lingers to make you feel the space and mood and immerses you in the world. The source material is kinda on par with seasonal isekai, the characters seem superimposed on the background and the architecture is traced, this makes the anime a huge step up.By contrast, the DM manga is an artbook full of beautiful illustrations, and the studio actually has to downgrade it to be able to draw enough frames. Trigger has its own charm, but they never sit with you and make you FEEL the world.
>>291689009I think the first few episodes ruined its chancesThey didn't make a good job of setting the mood for the later story; should have omitted the excessive early gag scenes.

>>291689153No. Frieren got popular because it was a native isekai. People could copewatch it by saying that "it's not isekai, it's fantasy" while it had every isekai trope possible.
>>291693968I hate it but he's right.
>>291689009I think I do understand the issue, which is that Dungeon Meshi doesn't beat the audience over the head enough. It generally respects the viewer's intelligence. It shows the party losing because they're hungry and not on their A game. They mention that revival magic exists offhandedly, even mentioning Marcille's first death and asking if someone can be revived from poop. They mention that the dragon has a slow metabolism and will digest Falin very slowly. It assumes that you're smart enough to put 2 and 2 together and conclude that they're in a race against digestion rather than death, and that while they are on a timer, they don't need to rush and it's better if they don't because they don't want to confront the dragon while running on fumes again.Needless to say, I think that respect is misplaced and has made the series less accessible.I've looked up multiple reactions of episode 1, and in a lot of them, the reactor asks>Why don't they care about saving his sister? Isn't she gonna die if they don't hurry up?That said, I think that DM's level of popularity is ideal. Popular enough to get a full, high-quality adaptation, but not popular enough to attract a horde of retarded bandwagoning tourists.
>>291694019The issue is that most people are not gay.
>>291694019With it barely breaking even you should be ready for next season to have a massive drop in quality.

>>291694184That whole episode was made to farm youtube reactions.
>>291694154>>291694184That's another big thing. Frieren is frontloaded with the best part and runs out of steam the longer it goes on. But most viewers will stick with it because they remember when it was good.Dungeon Meshi continually gets better as it builds up and ends damn near perfectly. But most viewers won't even get that far because the weakest part is the beginning.
>>291689009The plot-the way the story progresses-is the worst aspect of DM. The first chapter is also rushed.
>>291694209DM only gets gayer as it goes on, even if you stick with it it just gets worse.
>>291694134It's a positive attribute. If I was asked to complement it and that was all I could come up with it would be damning with faint praise. But that is not the context.I am emphasizing the skill of the creators, that is a compliment.
>>291693659Competent is the understatement of the century. The studio took, I agree, a story on par with a seasonal isekai, and put it in the conversation for the best anime of all time through presentation alone.
>>291689009DunMeshi is too highbrow for normalfags.
>>291693659>Can we just acknowledge the anime adaption of Frieren was really competent?
I've not touched it, but at a glance, DM gives me the impression that the author is trying waaaaay too hard to make it as nonsexual as he can get away with without completely turning everyone off. Like he has no libido or is actively working to contain it. It makes it come off as extremely unnatural to me.

>>291693659>You are now imagining a version of dungeon meshi with anime-original shots of the group traveling and navigating the labyrinth, establishing shots of stone and trap gears, and unspoken character moments not explained by dialogue.
>>291689009I think both are good but Dungeon Meshi is more thought out and manages to land better the feeling of fantasy adventure compared to Frieren. I'm thankful it's a finished manga with a second season already in production too, so no blue balling the audience until the end of times, but I really want to watch the next Frieren season, the cliffhanger at the end worked on me.
I like both Dungeon Meshi and Frieren.
I liked season 1 of frieren and Dungeon Meshi and have finished the manga for the latter but anime only for the former. Havent finished season 2 yet for frieren but seeing the explanations of how demons are just written poorly kinda steered me away from it. Though id still sex frieren and fern so it doesnt matter end of the day.
>>291689009idk man, Frieren is pretty deadfrieren just happened to be the fotm season that got into the normiesphere like jujutsu kaisen and all of those that get turned into memes which sucks because you can't discuss it anywhere anymore
Honestly I like that frieren is the popular anime for normalfags. Its the perfect nothingburger lightning rod that keeps them from shitting up my WHA and Meshi threads.
>>291689009So what is the author of Dungeon Meshi doing these days? Still taking it easy by rolling in the royalties of the manga and anime?I wish she would make another story set in the same universe next, would be a shame to not use all that world building that she built up over the years during Dungeon Meshi's serialization.

She clearly put a fuckton of work into Meshi's worldbuilding, so I imagine she'll either stick with Meshi's world and set an entirely new story in it with a new cast and new theme, OR will take a lot of time and think up a new detailed world to make a big story off of, OR will just go back to doing oneshots and anthology stuff.

>>291689009Frieren Season 1 was objectively insanely strong at building a fanbase.Possibly one of the best to ever do it. Season 2 was noticeably worse for that because that was a slumped portion of the manga. Trigger really didn't squeeze out all the appeal of Dungeon Meshi in my opinion.
>>291690748>DM starts weak but keeps getting better and better.Dungeon Meshi's first half is stronger than the second half. The conflict with the demon is not well executed and betrays the environmentalist themes that made the first half interesting.
>>291697034How can an opinion be this objectively incorrect
>>291691883>>291692795>>291693659I don't think Frieren is the most amazingly written story, but the animation really helped squeeze out all the juice the series had regarding feelings of wistfulness. Which is an emotion that the modern world really fucking loves. Any media that is able to evoke that emotion well gets popular. And when that wasn't the case, the anime took the manga's pretty mediocre action sequences and made some extremely good fights out of them. Personally I think that all of this is more down to Madhouse being a better anime production company with a better direction team than Trigger.

>>291697424Oh, but they try. They do a piss poor job at it, but they try. My favorite one is the "anti-magic rocks" that would seem like the most important thing for many characters to have and use but its only introduced for a gag.
>>291689009It's only a tiny bit better than Frieren shit. The bar isn't set high here.
>>291697390The second half fucks the environmentalism aspects pretty hard, and then it bloats the cast with boring characters that end up not doing anything for all their time on page. Flamela is the only one that was worth introducing because she's literally pure sex.
>>291697581>environmentalism aspectsThat's not even a theme of the series. You sound like you have poor media literacy.
>>291697597It is, the fact that the dungeon acts like any biome and needs to be balanced and people should respect it is a major theme but >>291697581 is wrong because it doesn't get fucked.
>>291689009I'm not. Frieren is high concept with a strong premise that quickly becomes a meandering by the numbers fantasy adventure. This is a strength however in selling it to normalfags who don't want anything too unique or challenging. Dungeon Meshi gradually builds an intricate world, and its strength comes from the fruition of so many different arcs, subplots, and details being united by ironclad theming. But most viewers will have tuned out long before then and Laios being a literal autist made it hard for many to relate. There were a lot of early criticisms he didn't seem to care about his sister potentially dying, and that's emblematic of the writing being too subtle. Meanwhile Frieren might as well have lit up a "please cry" sign at all the emotional beats.
>>291689009Because it is unironically peak. From what I've nticed, the best series always either get ignored or just kind of exist without reaching a high level of popularity. Just google a list of the most popular anime/manga series and you'll understand.
>>291697813>There were a lot of early criticisms he didn't seem to care about his sister potentially dyingBut OnK having a sister fucker MC is fair game! Fuck western society.

Honestly re-reading DM has made me realise just HOW good it is. The way to manages to tell a good story without compromising its premise is impressive. The story goes many places but food and cooking remain central, the world building is first class (just compare it to Frieren lmao). The art is great and there's a serious attention to detail. Don't respond if you're an anime only
>>291694019Feeling the need to nearly break the fourth wall and explain themes and subtext to the viewer/player/reader is probably one of the most common things which writers do to drag down their quality of their work. Frieren itself would be a lot better if it didn't feel compelled to hit you with a>the meaning of the story is...just about every episode.

I think the issue is the first few chapters of the manga werent really improved upon by the anime as even outside of the art theyre sort of mid compared to later ones. DM starts of as pretty good but not amazing but gradually gets better. The point at which it "clicks" in both formats is the red dragon fight and the rest of the chapters on the 4th floor with Izutsumi also actually adding to the cast a few chapters after. Due to this it sort of filters people way harder. I think the same wouldve happened with Frieren if it didnt air the first 4 episodes in one go as it wouldve gotten a more cult classic following had those been aired weekly. A similar sort of thing is whats happened with WHA when others have mentioned it in the thread. The first few chapters arent bad but theyre nothing to really think greatly about and you dont have the author's (who is a bitch) good art and panelling to draw you in. Except WHA takes far longer to get to the meat (and even then its mostly the art carrying it) to the point it needs 4 seasons to get to it.
>>291700703>author's (who is a bitch)Elaborate?
Frieren is just objectively good. It's LotR of anime. Dungeon Meshi is simply just okay. It was good in the beginning but massively dropped in quality when author decided to drop the interesting cooking gimmick and turned it into generic battle shonen crap but fantasy. Wasted potential.
>>291700774Dungeon Meshi never dropped its cooking aspect. Even when things got more serious with the demon it still had episodic cooking chapters and the manga literally ends with a banquet, which is what people were expecting to happen. Laios also defeats the demon by eating it.

And throughout all of this there were more slice of life chapters. You making things up doesn't have anything to do with the series itself.
Why do DM fags constantly try to start flights with Frieren? How insecure are you? Pathetic behavior, no wonder your series flopped.

>>291698226The fact that none of the character arcs, conflicts, or worldbuilding revolves around environmentalism maybe should have clued you in it's not a theme. There's like one and a half characters that mention it as part of their characterization.I mean you have to see the contradiction here of claiming the reading is self-evident for anyone with media literacy but also getting mad that it isn't actually fully there.Dungeon Meshi's theme is about eating well not being just an indulgence, it is important to physical and (importantly) mental health and human connection. This is a theme that's actually continually reiterated. "Eating is the privilige of the living."

>>291697131>I don't think Frieren is the most amazingly written story, but the animation really helped squeeze out all the juice the series had regarding feelings of wistfulness. Which is an emotion that the modern world really fucking loves. Any media that is able to evoke that emotion well gets popular. I agree with this, and it's why when I watched the first 3 episodes of Frieren I thought they were incredible and thought it was really going to be something. But then the rest of the series just kept doing it again and again without any new ideas to the point that I'd just roll my eyes any time that another wistfulness moment came up after being telegraphed for 5 minutes. And mixing it with so much random uninteresting stuff didn't help. It's also true that the DM anime just didn't have much going for it in terms of art an animation. I wonder what a Frieren-level adaptation for DM would have looked like, maybe we'd find out that the more cerebral themes of DM just don't have the same potential for being enhanced by an anime adaptation as the Frieren wistfulness.
DM is good but I think it would be better if Kui just wrote and hired a better artist to draw. Her artstyle is too tumblresque and kinda politically coded which is probably the main reason for it lower popularity.
>>291697597The entire reason that Laius succeeds throughout the first half is that he and Senshi treat the Dungeon like a natural biome to study, understand, and navigate according to its rules. That is pure environmentalism. The Dungeon has to be understood as a natural environment for anyone to succeed in trailblazing through it. Those that rely on pure power (like Toshiro's group) can only follow Laius and co., and end up more easily disabled than them because they lack understanding. The cooking is important because it shows how they have to literally live off the land as they go. Hunting and foraging, relying on understanding what they're dealing with to not poison themselves or be malnourished. The Kelpie chapter is probably the series best, because it reasserts that the Dungeon is a natural environment. With wildlife that is not sympathetic to you. That even seasoned veterans have to respect what they're dealing with every day, or die for it. This disappears as the Dungeon is turned into more and more of an artificial construct and its rules matter less and less as the spectacle of the series is heightened and the environment starts to become more distorted and less focused on. Ending with the entire dungeon being swiss cheesed as the Demon grows in power. The next instance of the manga to getting back to its earlier style is the dragon battle royale. But that is a short few chapters and doesn't reverse course.
>>291689009It's simple really.Frieren is more popular in Japan but Dungeon Meshi is more popular in the west. That is because Frieren is a seinen/light seinen and requires a certain level of intelligence, patience and emotional intelligence to appreciate hence why it resonates with Japanese more.Dungeon Meshi on the other hand is a shonen/hard shonen which can be easily consumed by anyone irregardless of their intellect hence why it's more popular in the west.
>>291700937>The first part was about getting to FalinExcept that the first thing the story does is establish that they actually have quite a while to get there because reptiles digest slowly. This is basically what every open world vidya does. "Solve this problem, but you don't have to like rush or anything". Where the intent is for the player to just fuck off and explore around and chat up NPCs. In Dungeon Meshi that means more chapters of daily exploration and chicanery, the strongest parts of the narrative.
>>291701744>Frieren>Seinen>Meshi>Shonen>irregardless
>>291701693The reason Laios' party survives is because they take care of their own bodies. "We've been having three square meals a day, that means we're taking this more seriously than you!"The worldbuilding goes into detail about the ecosystem of the dungeon, and Senshi is show to care about not disrupting it. But that's a far cry from environmentalism being a theme.Environmentalism is "A political and social ideology that seeks to prevent the environment from degradation by human activity."If environmentalism were a theme the heroes would be contrasted with foils that exploit and damage the environment.>Hunting and foraging, relying on understanding what they're dealing with to not poison themselves or be malnourished. I think the disconnect here is about verbiage. You're talking about what I would call "survivalism."
>>291689009Story about exploring the world and learning from people doesnāt resonate as well as one about slightly changing your worldview. Probably for the best though since the latter attracts the worst kinds of people.
>>291701999>If environmentalism were a theme the heroes would be contrasted with foils that exploit and damage the environment.Good thing they were you fucking retard
>>291689009Its a fairly slow series and has a more male dominated cast
>>291701693>The entire reason that Laius succeeds throughout the first half is that he and Senshi treat the Dungeon like a natural biome to study, understand, and navigate according to its rules. >That is pure environmentalism. The Dungeon has to be understood as a natural environment for anyone to succeed in trailblazing through it.That's not environmentalism, it's just the "autism" that people always talk about: how Laios and his party are at an advantage because of their genuine interest in the dungeon and how it works. And I wouldn't call it a major theme, it's mostly a device for the giving an unique characterization to Laios, Senshi and Marcille and to give a believable reason of why they are able to succeed against the odds.Ultimately the main theme is mortality. Inside the dungeon, the rules of mortality are altered, changing how the character relate to death, fatal risks, the death of loved ones, etc. And for that reason the best chapter is undoubtedly the one with the rabbits, where the rules of death reach their complete reversal in an absurd carnival of corpses, but at the end of it Marcille finds the same specter of death and loneliness as she would have found outside the dungeon, and is finally pushed into her deal with the devil.
>>291702132this doesn't really hold much water when dungeon meshi has more relevant female characters than frieren does and they're also much more relevant to the plot
>>291701999The only reason Laius and Senshi and their party could eat, is because an effort was made to understand what existed around them and how it worked. It wasn't just, "grab the nearest monster and eat chunks out of it". When Laius did that he got ill, twice. Environmentalism isn't just Ferngully. It also is in media that depicts the complexity of the environment, and the need to understand it. Where instead of the message being explicitly, "save the trees!!!". It can be implicit, "you are lost if you don't understand how the trees work". Dungeon Meshi's first half is completely that. If the Party didn't understand how the environment worked, they'd have failed. Kabru's party was the counterpoint to them. Kabru was smarter than Laius, faster than Laius, and more talented than Laius. But he never sought to understand what he was dealing with and he failed repeatedly. The beauty of the environment was also very important. Many chapters, especially early on, used the environment itself as a focal point for impactful illustrations. Same goes for characters that had learned to live with, rather than against, the Dungeon. And the wisdom they imparted.
>>291689009It's a better Konosuba...a hotdog with avocado is still meh compared to the fine cousine that Frieren pulls.
>>291702345>because of their genuine interest in the dungeon and how it works.ergo, environmentalists
>>291697679Themes about the food chain and cycle of life are not the same as environmentalism. You have poor media literacy.
>>291702345Laius being a 'monster otaku' is funny and he is characterized as psychologically abnormal in general. But also him just being interested in the monsters and how they worked and what their anatomy was like, was a key part of what made him different from the other party leaders. A genuine interest and respect for the world around you, is one of the key pillars to environmentalism. Like I said in the other reply, it isn't just "save the trees". It is also, "you are missing something important inside if you don't understand how the world around you works". Works can exist purely to make you develop an interest in a topic as a means of spreading an ideology. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is not a book that exists plainly to communicate to people that old buildings must be preserved. But instead it communicates to people the importance of structures like Notre Dame by making it a focus of the story that is also about other things. Victor Hugo wrote that book in order to convince the Parisian population to renovate old and degraded structures, but he didn't do it purely through putting out sympathetic pamphlets. Dungeon Meshi using examples of Laius and Senshi using their understanding of the environment around them as a way of navigating difficult challenges, is the same thing. Mortality is a focus. That is correct. But that reinforces my claim, in a certain way. The cycle of life and death is often a key part of how natural environments work. Things die so other things live. Preventing that death, like Thistle does, is unnatural.
>>291689009Dungeon Meshi doesn't have the mid-life crisis hook of Frieren. The truth is a lot of people identify with Frieren as they grow older, especially childless Westerners. Dungeon Meshi is much more of a light adventurer romp, so there isn't as much discussion and speculation and emotional attachment as with Frieren.
WHA clears both since it has actual lolis unlike the safe horny cast of Freiren/DM
>>291702427That's just survivalist, retard kun. Adapting to the environment is not an environmentalist message. If Laios was trying to stop other adventurers from going into the dungeon, or petitioning it to be closed, or any similar action, then yeah you'd have a point. But they don't, so you don't have a point. They are just being respectful and adaptive in a hostile environment.

Friern is shit and cant even be properly classified as Beyond the Journey story, because the Demons were never fully defeated, so they are basically fighting the same enemy. It is just continuation of the same journey. Proper Beyond the Journey story is Tolkien“s New Shadow, because Morgoth and Sauron were defeated and the new villain was a human cult that has spread through out Gondor.

And sometimes is as simple as a joke were you need to have walking mushrooms in the upper levels because you can't magically coerce nature to fit your whims.
DM fans and the hate they feel towards Freieren is fascinating to me. I wonder if it's because DM attracts a lot of certain types who look at Frieren demons and see themselves in them hmm
>>291702928Of course! Legendarily, survivalist enthusiasts hate the environment. Ever read Hatchet in grade school? The author was a mountain man in his own right and cared deeply for nature. This is typical. Many others writing the same types of books as him are the same. Only a retard without any common sense thinks that someone that is going to write deeply about nature and living in it and having to adapt to it, is not going to support preserving it.
Delicious in Dungeon appeals mostly to the reddit millennial crowd(who are a dying breed) thanks to so lany quirk chungus characters and constant quips.Frieren is more cerebral.

>>291704189Dungeon meshi orcs are pretty alright for what they are in japanese fiction: pig people. Also, the world isn't really sanitized even if the attitude of the main party makes it look that way.
>>291704045No, I point out some of the clear examples of environmental themes on the manga, which you clearly ignored and had no answer for. But I bet your next post is going to be yet another bunch of nothing no worthy responding to.
>>291704189Ontological evil races that are not made of magic like say D&D demons (that just turn into angels if they become good because they're not made of actual matter nor can they die in the physical plane) make no sense because living, thinking beings tend to go for collaboration as a better strategy, unless something like resources is involved. So "every single orc is evil all the time because it just is" raises a bunch of questions on how and why.
Iām currently watching DM and finding it way more fun than Frieren. Characters are expressive and the story has a good balance of being silly and knows when to take itself seriously which makes the darker moments hit harder. Even the worldbuilding and monsters are more interesting compared to Frieren. Frierenās comedy feels forced in a lot of the time like having Frieren randomly get eaten by a Mimic for the 100th time or just making fun of Stark because the series needs a punching bag. The world building there is just having random villages that youāre emotionally manipulated to feel something for since Himmel did a cool thing there once. It says a lot that the demons are the only thing that generates any discussion for Frieren since theyāre the only things that add anything to the barebones plot.
>>291704482Stark being a punching bag and his relationship with Fern never progressing outside of the designated episodes is really fucking lame.
>>291694215Fine by me. Plot and worldbuilding is so overdone in anime (shonen slop being the worst offender) it's quite refreshing to see character-driven stories like Dungeon Meshi or Demon Slayer. Conflict between characters is fundamental for an entertaining story and yet it seems only some female mangakas understand this, while male mangakas like to focus in crap like coming up with the next best power system after Nen.And let me just say that Nen as power system is a fucking joke; seriously, >a whole category (specialist) designed to justify any asspull the writer needs to keep the plot moving foward.Pathetic.
I just think it's weird and suspicious how defensive certain people get about how demons are treated in this singular piece of fiction treating demons as manipulative prey beasts. In general, the idea that a race of creatures can lie to prey on you seems to be something that needs to be attacked by Them no matter what. Which means it may be true.
>>291703901The fact that you think this is about politics proves you are merely projecting very, very hard. My issues were always about the story being just bad. Friern was always only good fro a single chapter, carried hard by Himmel. And the fact that it was never able to move away from that, how many chapters later, while also very clearly not being "Beyond the Journey" story but just continuation of the same journey. Another example of actual Beyond the journey story is Nier, where Replicant is the original journey, and Automata being After the End Requiem, in a world where humanity is dead. >>291702922

>>291701060They're kind of different kinds of fantasy overall.DM has strong worldbuilding, Frieren just kinda wings whatever it needs at the moment. Both have a strong central theme that's more important than the world. Both have good characters, Frieren lays almost everything on the table immediately and brings new ones as needed (same thing as with the world), DM takes a while to grow the strong main cast in.DM has elf politics, but has largely unpolitical themes. Frieren is vaguely reactionary, which is why /pol/ loves it.Frieren is more popular because the anime is honestly an incredible achievement in direction, art direction and pacing. >>291706766>On a certain level I actually appreciate an anime were the demons are actually, you know, DEMONS instead of pretty good boys and girls who didn't do anything wrong waifu bait, but they went to hard to try and come up with an explanation rather than just saying, THEY'RE FUCKING DEMONS! This isn't hard. We've been at this a while now.I prefer what Frieren does because their demons don't just feel like sadistic people with horns, in fact non of them seem to "want" to hurt you, it is just what they do. They give you enough hints to explain what is going on, made of mana, possibly created, compelled to hunt humanity(includes elves and dwarfs) despite not needing too, no guilt or empathy, the answer is that monsters and demons are obviously a self evolving type of magical terminator. Unlike like a single minded terminator that makes its attack immediate, this type of monster / demon just has a slight compulsion leading it to live a life outside of its mission, bread and propagate before dying in battle. A long term strategy that means they can't be wiped out in one war and are always there to at least be a consistent harassment and roadblock to humanity. I think the final answer to these things if the author ever decides to pick up manga as a profession again will be to fix the code so they can you know, just not.

>>291709071I can't decide how the missing cod piece is the fault of Kui being a woman.
The whole aesthetic of the world in Frieren bugs me. It's not like DiD isn't standard video game dungeon crawler aesthetic but they do keep things actually IN the dungeon for most of it. Characters look and dress in ways that feel more appropriate. Frieren just feels too modern. Like everyone is walking around a fairly contemporary Europe. You even eventually get fuckos in WW2 attire.
>>291709227I think it's just that the cod piece would be fabric and the dullahan is all armor. There's no padding or underarmor clothes in there (which there would be if it had a real knight in it)
>>291702651Nothing that you're saying is false, but you're starting with your predetermined conclusion that it's about environmentalism and working backwards to see traces of that everywhere. This character has a genuine interest and respect for the environment in the dungeon? That's environmentalism. This other character has genuine interest about this specific part of the environment, and it's not even clear that he respects it rather than just being obsessed with it and sort of fetishizing it? Well, that's close enough to environmentalism. This other character has genuine interest in the dungeon purely as a magically created system that can serve as a mean to her end of completely changing the rules of life and death? Well it's still sort of like the genuine interest thing, so it still counts. The theme of mortality has some minor overlap with environmentalism? Looks like you just proved my point. It's not like DM has nothing at all to do with environmentalism, but the original claim that that was clearly all that it was about and it was wrong for it to move on and to look at its other themes from other angles in the second part doesn't make sense. You're the one who just unilaterally decided that it was about environmentalism and it shouldn't be about anything else.

>>291689009Frieren has the sissy red haired guy who always moans like a bitch
>>291709814What could you describe the thesis statement of the manga as up until the Red Dragon fight? With the deliberate counterpoint of Kabru's on-paper more competent squad versus our party of misfits and what differentiated them. With multiple chapters of the cast going gaga for Senshi's understanding of the dungeon and his ability to live in tune with its rhythm and ecosystem. With chapters like the Kelpie having Senshi almost get Grizzly Man'd over finally getting too cocky and forgetting that the world didn't exist to serve him. With all the focus being paid to de-gamifying the monsters and environments encountered and treating them like animals rather than statblocks. All that together doesn't let me walk away with any message other than one connected to environmentalism. The cast is not very large and most of the characters aren't particularly deep by that point. The lore of how the Demons work doesn't exist yet. To me it was obviously a story that was basically about teaching the readers about the need to care about the environment around them and learn about its functions. That the natural world is interesting and complex and something that you should wonder at. And that those that know it better, get farther than those that try and brute force conflicts. Otherwise all of that was just page filler. Which doesn't make any sense. I'm completely willing to admit that the story lost interest in that topic in the second half. But I'm also totally of the opinion that was for the negative and what took its place as a thesis statement was weaker. I did not care about the Canaries. The lore of the demons was not all that interesting and demystified the wrong things. The cast grew and grew but most characters didn't do anything interesting. Flamela is the exception because I'm a horndog for bitches like her.

>>291711007>With multiple chapters of the cast going gaga for Senshi's understanding of the dungeon and his ability to live in tune with its rhythm and ecosystem. That was the weakest part of the manga for me. It was still good on net because there was still a lot of excellent character introduction and worldbuilding going on, but the pro-Senshi message was being laid on way too thick and it was starting to get repetitive and uninteresting. The chapter where Senshi was ignoring Chilchuck's instructions on how to avoid the traps and somehow avoiding any consequences in particular was a bit dumb. I remember being very relieved when all of that stopped in the kelpie chapter and it started letting all characters show something interesting about themselves. As far as the thesis statement in the first half, I guess there wasn't too much there yet. It was mostly an exploration of how all the different characters were bringing in something different. Kabru was presented as an anti-Laios and his skill was observing and dealing with people instead of monsters, and it just happened to not be what you need when going into the dungeon.I guess I can see why you'd see it that way if you thought the pro-Senshi message about how the guy in the woods knows what's up and the city slickers don't was particularly engaging. But I found it fairly banal and unoriginal and it was getting in the way of the worldbuilding and the characters, which had plenty of unique and interesting ideas. I was more than happy to have the first half just set up the world and the characters and wait for the second part for the more interesting themes.

>>291711837For me, Senshi was the tour guide necessary to convey the ins and outs of the environment the characters were in. He was preachy, but he wasn't a genius at everything - like with his inability to handle magic. But he was the guy that had spent the time learning the ropes to survive. It didn't have to be particularly original, it had to be particularly well executed. And I think early Dungeon Meshi handled the idea of a world of monsters close to the best regarding making it feel natural. Even sillier monsters still had something to them that was fun and appealing and felt believable. That was lost as it went and the focus became more and more on the characters as people and the central quest with the demon. Which to me was just less interesting. Like, I'd rather read something like Helck, than the second half of Dungeon Meshi. But there isn't something that has the same quality of appeal as the first half.

>>291689009Dungeon Meshi kind of suffers from being an insider's story I feel. Like it's a good general story but for it to truly pop you need to already be knowledgeable or at least interested in the concepts it explores. Frieren doesn't require really need any existing knowledge base to pop, it's just a generic tolerable story with two relatively pretty main leads and a story that's basically episodic with an anime with plenty of beautiful scenic shots. Dungeon Meshi also suffers from the problem of being too well written I feel? As in the story avoids having any holes in it big enough to cause constant discourse on how people want to interpret it, Frieren's poor handling of demons is a boon for its popularity its a constant point of yeah but the author doesn't really portray these supposedly human hating monstrosities that will always hate humanoid life and will always be looking for their downfall as being entirely unredeemable monsters since they give them moments of humanization and the fear in their eyes as they lose. A big part of what makes shows that are consistently talked about well after their run time is making it something that has a solid enough story to be enjoyed but enough problems, holes or unsolved mysteries to spark discussion for years to come. Dungeon Meshi doesn't have any of those.

>>291700774If anything, I think Dungeon Meshi is a better contender for the LotR of anime, if not for popularity than at least for being good for similar reasons.LotR and Meshi are both defined by the sheer level of dedication to the characters and setting, and the attention to detail. The biggest difference between them is the ideologies of the authors and the cultures they were born and raised in, but I do think Tolkien and Kui are cut from the same cloth. If Tolkien was unfrozen and became curious about Japanimations inspired by his works, I'd definitely recommend Dungeon Meshi to him before I'd recommend Frieren.
