The problem I have with S2 so far is that S1 felt like David had an arc. His Mom died, he got the Sandevistan, and despite her wishes never really fit in with the straight edge life. Then after Maine, his father figure dies he does become a known merc, keeps thinking he's special and eventually loses it all but goes out a renowned merc, encapsulating the theme of the game. Live a zero or go out a hero.I'm not getting any of that from S2. I hid the midpoint of the season and none of the characters are all that interesting. Feels like there is no overall central goal. David wanted to prove himself, then he gets tied to Arasaka due to the Sandevistan and I guess we have the Engram chip, but D's character doesn't get enough limelight. Kings reason for going cyberpsycho feels very weak given his ex is still alive, and Roman feels like an afterthought to draw some Shota bait. His character is literally 'go film stuff' but after the maelstrom stuff I have no idea why he's even there. Fuck, his Dad literally not giving a shit feels so half assed. I think I finally pinged my biggest issue with S2: it feels like two seasons smushed into one and they never really come together in a way that felt fitting or satisfying. The bonding glue that was the whole Capri storyline was handled very confusingly in how it just started random plot points (suddenly she can just split herself into two, suddenly she can heal Talia's condition, suddenly D is in love with her). I don't even know what was the the relevance of her being an entity made from numerous personality constructs when she could have easily just been a random AI Arasaka caught from the Blackwall.S2 should have either committed to solely being about Weak Kingsley, who just lost most of his high tier chrome and has to start all the way back from the bottom, learning to bond with Talia and trying to save her, or about Roman and D initially starting with earnest goals (reviving cinema and avenging his people respectively) which devolves into a grotesque commercial spectacle as their initial friendship breaks down over their growing fame because that's what Night City does.

The pacing is all fucked up, so much time and space wasted on D and Roman just sitting around, almost all of their scenes and dialogue where they are bonding could have been happening during action sequences. We only need to see Talia in the hospital a couple of times for us to know she's sick and has one foot in the grave, the rest of that time could have been spent on her fighting or molesting the twelve year old so she doesn't die a virgin.

honestly looking back, season 1 was rough in its own right. maine and rebecca are several steps beneath lucy and david for any development and the rest exist more to die or drive the plot than they do as characters. season 2 rotating a cast of character's several perspectives isn't really much for breathing room on the limited episode count, but the consistency for a 4 person cast does make it feel like you actually get more to take in of how wacko or messed up each of them are in turn. david gets more development than the entirety of the S2 cast, but this cast basically gets more than what S1's auxiliary crew got. that, and ultimately it's more a viewpoint into the lives of denizens in night city more than it is trying to tell a grand story I guess.

I wanted to like the series more than I think I did. All four leads are very likable characters but the story has so much less to say than the first season, where they make it clear the individual has no chance against the corporations no matter how strong they are or how hard they try to survive. The corps will always win in the end. Here they pull the reverse and the individuals win in the end instead of the corps and while I don't hate that for this cast of characters who got kicked around all season it's more of a personal victory for each character rather than something that ties through to a cohesive unifying theme. Solid 6/10 would watch again some time.
