And, of course, Minako's birthday thread.
Still October 22nd, still in time to celebrate.
>>
Happy birthday, Minako!

As usual, let's use this occasion to talk about her and her manga. I'll post a chapter or two later.
Half a day later than I wanted to make this thread, due to the PHP security shutdown shit, so it might be a bit shorter this year!? But that's barely an inconvenience.

>>291767796
The idea behind Minako was to make her a "perfect" selfless heroine and warrior to showcase the personal sacrifice that comes with that.
The idea behind Usagi was to make her relatable lead character, particularly for teenage audiences, who got overloaded with flaws to eventually overcome.
Hence why Sailor V and Sailor Moon are (despite some similarities) very different series, each with very different takes on the tropes and genres they pay homage to. And while I, too, prefer Sailor V and the kind of story it told, Usagi was probably the better-suited protagonist for the longer and more rigidly serialized spinoff, which (in manga form) has much less of a character focus to begin with.
What I always appreciated is how Minako's character traits and character arc from Sailor V carried over neatlessly to Sailor Moon, both in the manga and the anime (same for Artemis, by the way). It's quite subtle at times, granted, but that just makes it come across as more organic. And it only works because she's not the main focus in that series.

Her main sacrifice was not getting laid. That's a lot more relatable to teenage girls.
>>
>>291769418
Getting laid isn't the problem, getting into a relationship is. Then again, teenage girls in general might not understand the difference.

Fun fact:
Puchi Pandora has easily the most elaborate, drawn-out and graphic melting death of any character in Sailor V or Sailor Moon, stretching over three close-up panels and requiring two attacks to complete.
And we all know how much Takeuchi loved those melting scenes. I'd say it's a strange fetish for a female mangaka, but she did marry Togashi, so apparently not her strangest. (No kink-shaming.)

Well, both of these chapters were released after the Sailor Moon manga and anime had already started - chapter 1 not actually being the first chapter chronologically, that's chapter 3. Hikaru ("Ami") and Amano ("Umino") do feature in that one too though, so they definitely predate their Sailor Moon "counterparts". For your proto-Naru, on the other hand, it's not that clear cut.
>proto-ChibiChibi
That's a stretch though. Puchi Pandora is significantly older than Chibi-Chibi.

>>
>>291774776
Chibi-Chibi was a toddler (well, not really, but you know what I mean). Toddlers are always stupid.
And character designs don't really have much to do with ideas. Hikaru and Ami aren't much alike, other than their general appearance.

Yes, it was an obvious copy of the Chibi-Usa plotline in the Mirai (Black Moon) arc. But there's a reason for that: Cosmos echoes a past event because it is itself all about cyclic repetition. That's the "order" it represents.

Even though Minako is a better character in the manga, and the best girl Naoko’s ever created (at least out of the Senshi), I still will never give her her dues or help promote her work because she’s a fujo-hating cunt who helped ruin the Magical Girl genre by pandering to the male gaze and inviting all the yuritroons in. She’s now also trying to shut out Ikuhara from the rights to the IP and only promoting her manga canon via Crystal because she wants to make damn certain she can censor and retcon his fujo ships out of being canon, that’s how much she hates us fujos and wants to kick out of the fandom. Hence why she’s now trying this same shit with HxH and her “Noko” self-insert getting in between KilluGon.

Do not give her a single cent, she’s a vile, spiteful woman who deserves nothing!
>>
>>291781699

>You have, of course, no idea what you're talking about, rambling about "male gaze" and fujo and yuri and so on, and what you think Takeuchi had to do with any of that.
Then why did she censor and retcon all of the fujo ships Ikuhara added to the anime? Why does she hate the R movie? Why did she convince her husband to add her self-insert Noko for the sole purpose of getting in-between Killua and Gon? Why was her next attempted manga after Sailor Moon the pure yuritroonery known as PQ Angels?

It’s you who have no idea what you’re talking about, I on the other hand happen to be an expert on Naoko Takeuchi lore and none of you newfags should even try and match me.

She didn't "censor" anything - the anime still exists in its original form. She did not "self-insert" into HxH as an extremely minor character that doesn't matter and isn't getting between any of your ships. And I already told you that this thread isn't the right place to discuss your delusions.
>I on the other hand happen to be an expert on Naoko Takeuchi lore
You come across as a mentally ill gossiper with an axe to grind over made up bullshit.
But I repeat again: This thread isn't the place for shitting on a mangaka because she doesn't cater to what you want to see.

>shitting on a mangaka because she doesn't cater to what you want to see
The problem is Sailor Moon never belonged only to her, nor was it even her idea in the first place but rather her editor Osabu’s. Sailor V was her actual original idea, and then PQ Angels is what she wanted Sailor Moon to actually be but was forced to bend the knee to editorial interference before making it big with the franchise.

So other people also contributed to the franchise because it was a multi-media collaborative effort from the start, and she outright erased/retconned their ships which she had no right doing because she never even wanted to draw/write Sailor Moon in the first place and didn’t even have anything planned out beyond the Dark Kingdom arc. And the anime was always ahead of the manga with Naoko playing catch-up, so her simply making shit up as she went along yet making sure to outright contradict whatever Ikuhara was doing in the anime just looks spiteful and petty af.

This isn’t me going to just any random mangaka and feeling entitled enough to demand they switch genres and draw what I wanna see, the material for these ships already existed, it was canon, yet Naoko chose to deliberately retcon that despite not having any actual solid vision herself.
>>
>>291788503
>she outright erased/retconned their ships
Again: No, she did not. She did not erase or retcon anything. She wrote a manga and let Ikuhara make an anime based on it.
>And the anime was always ahead of the manga with Naoko playing catch-up
No, it was not. The first manga chapter released in December 91 (magazine version). The anime only started in March 92. Due to that alone the anime could not possibly always have been ahead. Besides, they didn't tell the exact same story anyway and had a very different pace for the parts they shared. In short: You're still making shit up and have no idea what you're talking about.
>simply making shit up as she went along yet making sure to outright contradict whatever Ikuhara was doing in the anime
Ikuhara wasn't "doing" anything in the first anime season at all. He only took over as the series director during the second season (which was halfway anime-original anyway). And, again, the manga was always the original work, not the anime. The anime was never once ahead. Takeuchi is the one who came up with the general plot.
>the material for these ships already existed, it was canon
You are mentally ill, anon. Get yourself treated.
And now shut up about your unfounded grievances. Takeuchi was the author, it was ultimately her decision what to write. Be thankful that Ikuhara got way more creative liberties than most anime directors adapting someone else's story usually do.
This is the last time I tell you that this bullshit does not belong in here.
>>
>>291788887
>Ikuhara wasn't "doing" anything in the first anime season at all. He only took over as the series director during the second season
NTA but he was actually assistant director during the first season and was considered Junichi Sato’s right-hand man at the time, he’s also likely responsible for creating the KunZoi ship.
>>
>>291788887
>Be thankful that Ikuhara got way more creative liberties than most anime directors adapting someone else's story usually do.
80s and early 90s still had a bunch of shows that only loosely followed the original source, Sailor Moon wasn't that off for the time, although during the 90s themselves close adaptations definitely were taking over.

Which doesn't mean he gets the final say. Sure, he can make suggestions and it's indeed likely that he influenced some things, like the one you mentioned. But acting as if he was the driving force behind everything is either ignorant or dishonest. Like the rest of that anon's post.

>>291789111
Yeah, you're right about that. The 90s were also when they slowly stopped making the anime adaptation before a story arc had fully concluded. A lot changed during those years in the industry.
Most notably, it the high-budget-OVA bubble burst, which caused a way tighter management of finances across the board. Cel animation was first perfected and then widely abandoned as the millenium came to an end. Genres shifted - and Sailor Moon was instrumental in that. Strange times.

No, I think it's only ever confirmed for Minako.
I'd say that it's likely that the other girls have similar sensations, but it might also be a very individual thing. Minako might be more sensitive in that regard than some others. And maybe her specific powers as Venus have a different effect than the other planet powers do; let's not forget that the planet and the goddess are related to love, eroticism and sensuality, and that might be what causes the tingly feeling. If that's the case, I would assume that Rei, for example, heats up during transformation, and Ami or Michiru might feel like swimming. Pure speculation of course.

That makes sense. It also means Minako is at her most powerful when she's the most horny. Which I feel has been a plot point in the past.

At this point, I'd wager that doing specific bodypart studies would benefit you the most. Of course, that can be a bit tedious and it's not so much a suggestion of a motif, but simply practice. It's probably also not what you want to do (i.e. drawing Minako, rather than, say, random hands over and over). But one the other hand (pun intended, I guess) it gives you a lot of routine and security when it comes to including those details in a full piece - even in a more abstract anime style - and that in turn will make a massive difference.

Sailor V should have been an OVA at the very least alongside Sailor Moon around the time R was in production, It was different enough that it wouldn't just be Minako in a Sailor Moon setting.

The big one for me would have been Takanori Arisawa making a different score for the OVA alone.

>The anime was never once ahead.
This is a blatant lie considering the filler Doom Tree Arc was only made to give Naoko time to catch up to the anime and think up the next arc.
>>
>>291807215
>to give Naoko time to catch up to the anime
Maybe you fucking idiot should look up when the final chapter (#13) of the first story arc released in Nakayoshi: February 1993. That's before the first anime season ended.
So, no, the manga did not need to "catch up". What the Makaijuu arc did was to give a anime a a larger buffer for the rest of the season.
I won't call you a liar, by the way. I think you're simply an idiot who does not know better.
>>
>>291807529
>I won't call you a liar, by the way. I think you're simply an idiot who does not know better.
Well SuperS as a season still disproves your assertion that the anime was never once ahead of the manga, since that was a filler hell season for a reason. Hell, they had to create a special mini-arc right into the next season just to properly wrap up SuperS because Naoko STILL barely had more than like 5 chapters out by the end of SuperS.
>>
>>291807693
You REALLY should look up when the chapters realeased before spouting your bullshit. You seem to go by tankoubon release dates rather than magazine release dates (and even then: the tankoubon that realeased in March 96 when SuperS had just ended went up to the eighth Yume chapter, so you're even wrong about that).
In short: No, the anime wasn't ahead during that time either. Not that it mattered much, since the story they told diverged significantly from the manga's Yume arc in key aspects. So even if they had been ahead, there would have been no need for them to postpone their own finale.
Not sure what you mean by "filler" either. There was no "filler", just the regular slice-of-life episodes that all seasons had, and that made the anime what it was.

Because many fans dislike Chibiusa, or at least dislike her getting focus over other characters.

Okay, I sat down and did the work for you, shitposter.

Let's define:
A story episode be any episode that moves the main plot forward. In particular, that means any episode that introduces a new arc (i.e. first episode of a season), concludes an arc (final few episodes), introduces a new major character (senshi or enemy) or has a significant change of the status quo (major enemy gets defeated, new Sailor forms or weapons - but not new singular attacks or minor tools like the transformation pen or Ami's pocket computer) or of a main character relationship. Also any episodes introducing major relevant plotpoints that set up the aforementioned episodes.
A non-story episode be anything else, including slice-of-life episodes, character-focus episodes (no matter how important the character development) or comedic interludes. While excluding them all from a rewatch makes for a terrible viewing experience and robs the anime of its heart and soul, that is what you call "filler".

>>
>>291813165
>>291820361
Your filler ranges from making up between 35 and 70% of each season. With season 1 having the most of it by a wide margin. And ironically, Stars, the season people most often express distaste for other than SuperS, having by far the least - also being the shortest. Almost as if fans actually enjoy the format the anime established early on - imagine that!
And as you can see, in terms of story vs. non-story episodes, SuperS sits right in the middle, neck-to-neck with the S season, which is often considered the highlight of the series.

Now, these are all the facts that took me almost two hours to compile. They should shut you dumbass up for good, but somehow I doubt that they will.
Therefore, let me preempt your complaints: No, if you decide to change the definitions I provided, that will not change the results significantly. If we, say, do include main-character focus episodes as story in all seasons, they all have about the same number of them, except season 1, ironically, which has less and would fall back even a bit further. Or if we excluded all the introduction of new forms and weapons: That would boil down to at most 4 episodes per season, and again affect all seasons somewhat equally.

For anyone else reading this: Again, I want to say that this list is not a recommendation. All the best episodes are among those that moron would consider "filler".

Cause Crystal was a cashgrab just to give Naoko more control over the IP and BTFO Ikuhara and the fujos even more, hence the incredibly forced and cringe Senshi/Shittenou shipping shit she shoved into the first season.

Oh, just shut up already with your conspiracy theories, fucktard. They've already been disproven thoroughly.
>>
>>291829232
>They've already been disproven thoroughly.
If anything Naoko’s attitude and all the evidence proves it thoroughly and the burden of proof instead lies on you Naoko ass kissers.

Do you deny Naoko is anti-fujo? Surely you can’t when there’s not a single fujo ship in a sea of yuritroonery that is the manga and she retconned all the gay male villains from the anime into being straight while also despising Ikuhara’s original OC Fiore. Not to mention deliberately baiting the audience with characters like Asanuma and Rubeus only to yank the carpet right out from under us at the last minute and show them to be straight. This isn’t even including her interference in HxH and how the character of Noko is so very obviously a stand-in for Naoko herself that she convinced her husband to include just so she can get in between the cute and canon KilluGon and steal Gon away from Killua while conversion therapying him into being straight. In fact one of the leaked planned HxH endings revealed Gon is supposed to get together with Noko (aka Naoko) in the end, how can you not see that as anything but a deliberate middle finger to us fujos?

Can you explain why she added in the Inners/Shittenou shipping shit when Crystal was supposed to be a straight panel-by-panel adaptation of the manga? She even retconned out one of her own panels in Crystal and deleted the scene of Zoisite sitting near Kunzite on his chair because she realized it would look too ship baity to the fujos, hence why you have people in the fandom like Miss Dream who have started thinking Kunzite/Zoisite was actually Naoko’s idea rather than Ikuhara and deliberately mistranslated the Materials Collection and mislead the fandom to reflect that.

Interesting. We don't get that kind of perspective often here. Most people started with the 90s anime, then read the manga (if at all) and the opinions on Crystal range from "really fucking bad" to "maybe not that bad".
What made you go for the manga when you found Crystal lacking, rather than dropping the franchise altogether? Because I think that's what many other first-time viewers did.
Should you ever find the time to sit down and watch the 90s anime in full, I'd love to hear what you think about it, coming from the manga and Crystal. I think what you will quickly find is how different it is in tone.
Another thing: Since you like Minako, I assume you've read the Sailor V manga too? What are your views on it, compared to the Sailor Moon one? I'm asking because I always found that they had quite a different feel to them - and that Sailor V comes closer to the old anime in that regard.

LMAO I bet you’re an unironic Inners/Shittenou shipper too and that’s why you’re so committed to defending your precious Hime-Sama Naoko. Imagine unironically preferring the no-chemistry having literal forced Ami/Zoisite over the cute and canon Kunzite/Zoisite, couldn’t be me. Ami/Zoisite is a literal homophobic ship too that only exists to piss off the fujos, they don’t fit together at all otherwise, it’s literally the most random of random ships and even Naoko would prefer to ship Ami with Makoto or even Usagi (based on PGSM and one scene in the Dream Arc) because she’s still a yuritroon at heart and only ever does hetero ships just to spite us fujos. As soon as the Shittenou died and they were safe from KunZoi shipping she immediately dropped the ships and went on to purityfag the Inners instead in typical yuritroon fashion.

Also all the bigwigs in the Western Sailor Moon fandom agree with me, such as JetWolf and prismatic-bell on tumblr and even all of the sailormoonforums, only fat, incel, yuritroon losers like yourself disagree because Naoko was directly pandering to your kind.

>>291831163
>The old anime was iconic but the manga had story beats that the anime couldn't match up with, especially around late SuperS going into Stars.
Because Stars in the manga was a literal Proto-Madoka and Madoka ripped it off beat by beat. Naoko was the one who started the cancerous trend of Mahou Shoujo pivoting away from a Shoujo and Fujo audience and instead pandering to old men who preferred stuff like grimdark, deconstructive plots, few to no male characters, and lots and lots of yuribait.
>(Not Usagi, Serenity, big difference).
Do you mean the OG Queen Serenity, Usagi’s mother? Yeah she was a real bitch in the manga and Beryl ended up being right all along, but I think Naoko intended for her to come off as a corrupt ruler because that just added to the deconstructive qualities of the manga.

The only thing that kept me from appreciating Crystal more was just its poor technical quality, I kinda liked what was trying (even rewriting for better some early things). I switched to the manga and enjoyed it, even though it was a bit of an effort because many Takeuchi’s drawings felt like scribble to me, even though some of her panels were really beautiful (and of course the colored pages were always top notch). And despite being technically poor, I really like the general aesthetic, like the eyecatches, I felt it had an identity.
I liked Crystal S3, even though you can tell the Precure style but at least the team was more comfortable with it. If anything I think Eternal and Cosmos movies are what the series should be aesthetically, they really nailed it with those, even though being movies I would have expected a little higher animation value for both. But they are pretty solid in the end and left me wanting more, despite being the ending. Maybe… another remake?
Oh yeah, after the manga I also read and appreciated Sailor V as well. You can tell the tokusatsu vibes were more pronounced compared to Sailor Moon and without its scope, but I found it enjoyable as well, also with a protagonist I actually like and love, sadly Usagi never clicked with me.
Yeah, I was thinking about go deeper with the old anime, but I feel a bit off with some of their characterizations, like a bitchy Rei or a Minako being a 100% more comic relief. I think I might try again if I find an excuse though, or if something like a new anime or side project gets announced. I really would have liked something like a musou game for Precure or Sailor Moon, but it seems unlikely. At least SM has that 90s beat em up.

By what standard do you judge art as "good" or "bad"? If it's just about what you like or dislike, that doesn't mean much for anyone but yourself.
And there's very little you can judge about art objectively, other than technique/craftsmanship (which there's no issue with at all here), perspective (again, no issue), detail or the lack thereof (which is hard to pin down for any manga) and character anatomy. In regards to that last point, yes, there is the issue of heavily-stylized proportions, mainly the legs being way too long compared to the upper body. But they are too long consistently, which in turn makes it a stylistic choice, I'd argue.

The thing about the character personalities in the anime is that, while many see them as extremely different, I'd argue that that's too much of an oversimplification. The anime didn't so much contradict their manga personalities as it simply gave them more room to breathe. That means that you will find the very same character traits that you know from the manga preserved in the anime, like Minako's desire for love, but also her self-sacrificial nature and absolute commitment to her duty. But she also gets to vibe with Usagi, be more outgoing, mess things up due to being too focused on one goal and so on. What you described as "comedic relief", because, yes, that all leads to comedic moments. But at her core, she's still the same character.
For Rei, it's a bit more complicated, but I'd still say that she's not as different as she's made out to be. Both in the manga and the anime, she's more mature and no-nonsense than the other girls. Committed to her friends, her grandfather and the work at the shrine. A bit aggressive and domineering. The manga gives her what seems like a manhating streak that's lacking in the anime, but since it comes from a deep-seated disappointment in her father, maybe it's simply how she deals with that: By lashing out. That's a commonality between the anime and the manga. As for her bitchiness: That's entirly towards people she cares about and comes from a place of genuine concern (mostly for Usagi, who definitely deserves a bit of a harsh reality-check sometimes, but also towards Yuuichirou later on).
The problem the manga had was that due to its tight release schedule, it barely ever got to display the characters personalities much, other than Usagi's, Chibi-Usa's and Mamoru's. But there are some exceptions: Minako of course has Sailor V, and some of her more comedic traits get revealed there from the very start. She also gets a bit of an elevated position during her introduction in the Sailor Moon manga and right after.

And also, all of the "Inners" get those extra chapters released during the Yume arc, that just focus on their personalities. And in the main story during the yume arc, there's even a focus chapter for each of them where they face a crisis that awakens the new powers in them - the ones where the Amazon Trio appear. Those are where we mainly get the non-archetypal part of their manga characterisations from, and, well, like I said, I don't think they're that far removed from their anime counterparts.

>>
>>291833219
Honestly ironic to me that the V manga's final chapters were published after both the Sailor Moon manga and anime published and aired their finales.
>>
>>291834168
Maybe. But it makes sense. Sailor V always was the "passion project" that was alowed to go at its own pace, whereas Sailor Moon needed to be delivered monthly. That meant that during those five years, Sailor Moon had to take priority and Sailor V only got a chapter every now and then when the Sailor Moon schedule allowed it. That meant only two or three chapters per year. There was even a stretch where no new Sailor V chapter came out for almost a year I think.
Sailor Moon ending was a bit of a double-edged sword though: On the one hand, it meant there was no pressure at all, on the other, Takeuchi probably wanted to bring it to an end soon before starting something new. And that's why the last two or three chapters came out in relatively quick succession (as quick as RunRun's slower release rhythm allowed it).

>The thing about the character personalities in the anime is that, while many see them as extremely different, I'd argue that that's too much of an oversimplification.
I never bought the argument that the main cast has so much less personality/characterization in the manga, that more so applies to the villains but not the girls. Except Haruka, who outside of the gender-fluidity is a nothingburger of a character who has no goals or ambitions outside of protecting a Princess she never even met during the Silver Millennium. You can really tell she was Naoko exercising her fetish for Takarazuka and was nothing more than ship fodder for Usagi.
>>
>>291838809
Well, it's not so much more or less of a personality, but how much focus there is on the characters versus just pushing the story forward. The manga didn't really have the luxury to give any of the girls other than Usagi and Chibi-Usa much focus, except for the one chapter each in the fourth arc and the special chapters that happen outside the ongoing narrative. The exception is Minako, of course, who arguably got more character development in 16 Sailor V chapters than Usagi did in 60 Sailor Moon chapters.
But generally speaking, you do have to pay a lot of attention when reading the manga to grasp all the little bits of character definition for the other girls that there is strewn across the dialogue.
The anime simply had way more time to elaborate on the characters and their personality traits: The Inners get at least one focus episode per season, usually two. And when there's no particular focus, you get the whole group together, interacting in everyday situations for half the episode, which also adds to their characterisation. This means that the whole character definiton is easy to grasp even on a surface-level watchalong. And that it could work out nuances where the manga had to paint in broader strokes.
That's basically why people say that they have "more" personality in the anime.

Nice idea, but Artemis is probably going to be a a bit of a struggle: There's cat anatomy for one (which, if you don't have a cat around to watch, is a lot to get used to from references), but also the heavy stylizations that Takeuchi on one side and the animators on the other added (mainly to make the cats more expressive in a "human" sense).
So you'll likely have a more relaxed experience if you don't try to get Artemis nailed down to the details, at least at first.

Depicted: Minako spitting out a mushroom.
Likely a reference to her disliking mushrooms according to her character profile in volume 10 of the manga.
But it shows that whoever drew it didn't do his work properly, since the type of mushroom Minako dislikes is shiitake (lentinula edodes) specifically, whereas the type depicted seems more like a white champignon/button mushroom (agaricus bisporus).

He’s just your obligatory generic, herbivore harem protagonist that Naoko was forced to replace a female love interest with because Sailor Moon was still published in a magazine aimed at teenage girls which wouldn’t allow a main yuri romance (at least not until Naoko got big enough to be able to force the issue ala PQ Angels), so she made Mamoru as the next best thing to appeal to the waifufags. A useless, unreliable, submissive beta faggot for those pathetic losers to self-insert into.

>>291854684
>Minako/Princess Serenity for the yurifags
Can’t believe you’re forgetting about the main yuri ship of Sailor V which is Natsuna/Minako, though that’s a pedoship and Natsuna is so obviously Naoko’s self-insert that she made to covertly perv on the underage girls like the closeted lesbian she is.

>>291855147
>The only ship I ever support is female character x me. It doesn’t matter who the guy is as long as I can self insert.

Sorry I meant with Sailor V, who she never realizes is actually Minako for the majority of the manga. But if you still think Natsuna doesn’t have a big stinking lesbian crush on Sailor V after it’s shown she covers her office with big ass posters of her that she fangirls over with hearts in her eyes then you’re literally delusional. He’s only older than Usagi by two years in the manga, which is practically nothing and still counts as being around the same age. Meanwhile Ikuhara aged him up into a college student and made him older by 4 years.
>>
>>291858808
>middle schooler and high schooler

>>
>>291858808
>which is practically nothing
If two years is "practically nothing", then they also aged him up by "practically nothing" for the anime. Because he's yet two years older there.
And, no, it does not count as "around the same age", fucktard. Usagi is in the second year of Chuugakkou. Mamoru is his second Koukou year. The two of them would never even visit the same school at the same time.
Your "two years is around the same age and four years is really creepy sodomism" bullshit is a completely arbitrary line you draw.
>into a college student
University/Daigakkou. College is a British thing, where people get their A-levels (uni qualifications) before going to university. Japan does not have that.
And, yes, I'm aware that the US almost uses the terms interchangably, probably because their universities are dumbed down to the level of a UK college.

Nothing wrong with liking the basic outfits. Of course, the school uniforms would be recurring outfits for reasons other than aesthetics, but the fact that they would be recurring necessitated that they needed to look nice.
Of course, the flipside is that with the girls being in school uniforms that often and their battle uniforms also resembling those school uniforms, the look would lose its novelty factor quickly, and the girls just being in regular 90s fashion (and sometimes high fashion) would become special.

Never heard of that before, looks like a rather generic gacha. The Sailor Moon artwork is nice though.

Well, they turned it into a film. At that point they must have still planned for a series format.

Can confirm. Gaming skill is directly proportionally related to cuteness.

What compels this schizophrenia? Are these the infamous “yuri goggles” I keep hearing about?

Because Sailor Moon is unironically a yuri manga. It’s about a harem of girls who all swear chastity to their one and only Princess and marry her in the end, how is that not yuri?

Great. You literally summoned the nutjob, anon.

PGSM's portrayal of Minako was one hell of a creative choice.
>>
>>291906295
It was full of unconvential creative choices. The most absurd has to be using plushies for the cats.
Yeah, it took its liberties with the characters and isn't much of an adaptation of anything that came before. More along the lines of "inspired by". That being said, for some reason it still works somehow.

PGSM also has the unironic best writing of the entire franchise.
>>
>>291908784
Meh. Not really. It's mostly plot and very little subtext. Solid enough, but as straightforward as a soap opera or a Bruce Willis action flick. Both the manga and the anime are more ambitious in terms of themes and manage to take a much wider scope overall.

By writing I don’t mean just plot, but rather characterization and development. And PGSM indeed has the best writing out of any of the versions when it comes to this, objectively speaking.

Also it’s not as ambitious in scope and themes because it only got to cover the first arc.

No. That's eactly where it's lacking in comparison particularly to the anime. That's why I'm saying it's "mostly plot". The characters are not only extremely different from what the source material provides, they're also more superficial. Granted, it has less time to build them. But as far as I can remember (and admittedly, it's been a long time since I've seen it), it treated them mostly as a collection of archetypes and tropes.
For Minako's character in particular, that boiled down to making her a popstar (no payoff), adding in a soap-style sickness for some melodrama (unrelated to the main narrative or what could be its themes). That's not good character writing. The anime literally gives Minako way more characterisation within the span of one single episode (#42) - and season 1 ironically does the killing characters off thing right before the finale with an actual plot relation and to drive a theamtic point home. The manga doesn't quite do as much early on, but still makes Minako a much stronger character; a team leader driven by her devotion to her cause, who's nonetheless capable of fighting her own battles due to her prior experience, to the point where she is the one who finishes off Beryl while Usagi fights Metallia (Chaos).
>because it only got to cover the first arc.
Not a good excuse, considering what I just wrote.

Again, I don't have anything against PGSM. It's fine to have a version of a story that's lighter on themes and handles its characters as archetypes. It works well enough for what it is.
But to claim that that thing is better writing than the other versions really is a stretch.

I actually prefer the art style of the first Crystal season, I like that it was a (albeit failed) attempt to render Takeuchi's art style in a different medium. S3 onwards feel like they make too many stylistic concessions to the 90s anime to the point that...I'd rather just watch the 90s anime.

The S3 op is extremely hype though.
