Whats the Beautiful Dreamer of Doraemon or Crayon Shinchan? I know there's some crazy sakuga in Shinchan at least but are any movies with more than just wacky hijinks?
Didn't really like Urusei but it had the appropriate mood i guess.
>>
Hijacking OP's thread to ask: what's the Beautiful Dreamer of [any long-running franchise]?
Not in the sense of crazy sakuga, but in the sense of a tonally and/or stylistically divergent movie that captures the show's spirit more poetically than literally.

Galaxy Express --> Movie
Gundam --> Char's Counterattack (arguably)
Eva --> EoE (extremely controversial take)
Maruko-chan --> My Favorite Song
Utena --> Adolescence

Anything else?

Chainsawman -> Reze Arc

I don't know what you mean by beautiful dreamer in the first place.
You need to be more indulgent towards anons before they answer.

Better than getting no attention i guess.

Kizumonogatari probably. The Rurouni Kenshin OVAs too. Kizu sucks,heh.

The Urusei Yatsura movie. Its pretty famous

Easy, Tenchi Forever for Tenchi Universe

>Kizumonogatari probably
Hell no. It's stylish, but as unrepresentative of the series' spirit as it gets. Kizu is too slow-paced, takes itself too seriously, doesn't have enough dorky wordplay, and I don't think the monsters even symbolically represent anything.
>The Rurouni Kenshin OVAs too
I mean, I liked them much more than the TV anime, but in what sense do they capture the spirit (of the manga in this case) better?

I wasn't expecting anyone to bring up Tenchi, but that definitely fits.

Love Tenchi and love Forever!

I just took what you said as "movies that almost feel like from a different show". On that note,the Adolescence is exactly like Utena only more streamlined and unneccessary. Isn't the 999 movie just a ep comp movie? Is it that different from the show? Went ahead and skipped that because it felt needlessly episodic.

All I know is Adult Empire is the memed one and Doraemon doesn't seem to have any that big. But I'd watch the first Doraemon one at least. Same for Dr. Slump.

>>291787497
You're forcing it with that selection. Feels like you mix things. For example GE999 film 1 is Rintaro's vision of the story, but in a sense more in line with what Miyazaki does in Cagliostro than a poetic retelling like say the Queen Millennia film or Goshogun's Toki no Étranger.

Kuso post. Go back to Ieddit.

I just want for /a/ to watch more classics. /a/ is dying

There aren't any Doraemon films like that; the best one I've seen is the orange dinosaur one. And for Shin Chan, obviously Adult Empire.

Film GE999 dampens the melancholic tone of the show, ages Tetsuro up a bit and emphasizes adventure, spectacle and manliness, shoving Harlock into the story because Rintaro thinks he's the most based man ever written, which is true but people usually watch this for Maetel. It's still GE999 but you get the idea.
The 2nd film is an original sequel that's roughly a darker version of the 1st. If you get over the repetition, it's a fine one too, with its own themes.

>Revue Starlight The Movie
I didn't want to bring that up because I didn't think most anons would appreciate the journey that led up to it, but HELL YEAH.
>Miyazaki's Lupin
How does Miyazaki capture the spirit of Lupin? Cagliostro and his episodes are great in their own right, but they're not very representative.
>Oshii's Gits
I didn't want to say it because someone might yell at me, but then I remembered that no one who read the manga before 1995 still posts here, so here goes: HELL YEAH
>Hosoda's one piece film
I've seen that take posted before, but as someone who never followed One Piece and always thought Hosoda was an "almost amazing but not quite" director, I don't really understand how anyone could come to that conclusion. Please explain.
>liz to aoi tori
I didn't want to bring that up because I don't want to diminish the rest of the series, but HELL YEAH.

Doraemon's movies were initially all straight up manga arc adaptations. Since the show was very episodic, they left longer manga arcs for the movies. They eventually started doing original anime movies but by then the brand image was pretty strong, so it was never space for adventures of directors with personal styles.

>a tonally and/or stylistically divergent movie that captures the show's spirit more poetically than literally
Not actually sure what you mean by this which is probably why all the suggestions confuse you.

But while everyone is posting "tonally different elements of franchises", I want to mention boogiepop phantom. It was less noticeable at the time due to there being no anime and a lot of people watching just phantom and being a fan of that on its own. But it's very stylistically different, it's a tonal bubble within the larger world and events, and the final episode basically has a return to form where it goes back to the regular style once the bizarreness is solved.

Just dipping into stuff i never checked out. Might as well ask for the cream of the crop of it. Going after the rec lists and must sees is nice and all but its nice to occasionally check out stuff out of the comfort zone. 70s stuff hasn't done too well so far.
