Standard slice of life manga with occasionally engaging character work with Loid and "horrors of war" themes. It's always a treat when the "final boss" shows up.

At the end of the day though, it's a cheesy feel good slice of life. If you can handle those, you'll like spy x family, if you read just for the spy drama you'll be disappointed and bored for like 75% of the manga.

I feel like the manga is a bait and switch since the intro chapters are very much not what this manga is about.

You'd think it's about a spy and his family, but the family dynamics and content takes a backseat for pointless school stuff where most of the main characters do not appear, and said school stuff is essentially inconsequential since the interactions for these characters are a slapstick routine that has gone unchanged for over half a decade now.
Like you can skip reading those chapters and not miss out.

This isn't a critique that there's too much slice of life, this is a critique that this series should be called Spy x Roommate since that's what the Forgers come off as since they hardly talk in favor of pointless Eden stalling shite.

The family stuff was very front loaded when the manga was new right. Their first outing, the Eden interview, the castle, the aquarium, Yuri's first visit, the bomb dogs, failing to tutor Anya, Yor learning to cook. All this material that had the fake family together with snippets of it not being fake. I feel like that is what is expected with this series right.

But then they started getting split off for months at a time and characters not named Yor just started stagnating since chapters that featured all of them together went away.
For example, Twilight at the start of the manga did not know how to be a parent and had to be corrected when he was out of line, but that trait and conflict disappeared. The reader is just supposed to assume it's happening off screen or something.

After seeing the author's other works, which are subpar, I don't really know who to blame for the stagnation of this manga.
If left to his own devices he writes some real shite.
So do we blame the higher ups for trying to make a bad school manga that goes nowhere to milk the audience?
Or the idolfaggotry that has surely influenced this series since the author is obsessed and panders to them?
