Did you visit any real life locations of your favorite anime that left a lasting impression on you? Or are you planning to go on such a trip anytime soon?I did pilgrimages of some of my favorite SoLs. Starting with an iconic one. My favorite part wasn't actually the school itself but rather walking around the town. Very cozy town.
I visited the Kamogawa delta (that appeared in S1 OP) on a separate trip. Very nice spot where locals and tourists have fun and relax.
There's the NNB school in Saitama. This one had the most emotional impact on me after how devastatingly empty the ending left me. I didn't expect to be able to visit it in time before my flight but miraculously I finished my day activities early so I beelined straight for this place. I'm glad I did.Very nice town for walking too.
There's of course the shitload of Yuru Camp locations which I probably shouldn't spam too much.
Speaking of Yuru Camp.
Yama no Susume, among others.
>>291813272Very cool, anon
>>291813272>>291813427>>291813613These are in my wishlist for when I visit Japan.
>>291814426The K-On school and Mt Takao is definitely doable on the same golden route trip. The NNB school is pretty out of the way so visiting it on the same trip probably isn't feasible though you could probably pair it with Hanno.
Totally forgot about Hinamizawa.
I'll certainly go to Kofu, Hachiouji and such when I travel there next year because of certain anime but I'm not really interested in going too far off just for that. Didn't know the NNB school was in Saitama of all places lmao. Guess I can try to fit that somehow.
>>291813272Back in 2012 yeah.Visited Shirakawa-go also over the years but not specifically for Higurashi.
>>291815676Based spring 2025 SoL connoisseur. But what's taking you so long? Commitment and financial situation?>>291815696Based. Kyoto is nice, isn't it?
>>291816454>Based. Kyoto is nice, isn't it?It was in 2012 - 2018~, absolute hell today post-Rona at any tourist site/major railway station though. That's why I stick to the Inaka now.
>>291816556Same here. I feel bad for the people who couldn't experience Kyoto before Covid. The lesser attractions like Kamogawa delta and Keage incline are still pretty okay though.Which reminds me of another K-On S1 OP spot that I visited. It was packed but still manageable.
>>291815336>>291815696Also not sure if it's still a thing so maybe someone who's been more recently can answer, but are the ema at the shrine still full of Higurashi art?
not my pic but the pilgrimage is in my own city.
I've only visited a few places shown in anime, and most of those are from w-witches series, so the places are kinda not exactly the same as real world. Still, would be nice to sit in a gondola with a specially trained singing actress that sounds like one of the Undine from Aria.
>>291816741>tourists taking photos of each other through the Nanzenji aqueduct Sad, just like fucking Inari Taisha now, the senbon-torii got made one-way in each direction and tourists just queue to take a photo at the entrance too, absolutely depressing.I feel bad for Shirakawa-go also, they have to (or at least in 2015 had to) deal with trannies dressing up as Hanyuu and taking pics through the town, who then printed the photos out and stuck them on a ton of ema at the shrine. Must be even worse today with the infinitely increasing number of visitors.
>>291816556last time I went there was a couple days before they let tourists back into Japan, never going back
Where do I go to whore myself out.
>>291816868Could seek employment at a Susukino soapland I guess.
does this count
Bump for interest
>>291816820I'd visit Venice again and Colmar if I had the money, though I'm not sure if I could stand the crowds.
>>291816454>But what's taking you so long?I just randomly awoke one day thinking "yeah I wanna go to Japan at least once" after years of denial because I live in the fucking antipode and I can barely stand a single figure in hours plane trip as it is, let alone the 30+ it actually is, but I already have my only time off long enough to make it worth it for 2026 occupied. Money's there, luckily. I'm staying a day in a stopover on the way there, hopefully I'll be too tired to actually care about the long flight back by the end. /b
Inb4 newfag mods nuke the thread again
If you know, you know.
>>291813272Not really but I did find dogakobo studios just randomly walking around, that was pretty cool
>>291813311Kamogawa Delta is the #1 place in Japan.
>>291813272I went to Hokuto for Super Cub anime tourism. There is nothing there, everything was far apart, and it was below freezing the entire four or so hours I walked around. Here is the konbini Koguma first takes her bike to. >>291816754I went in 2023 and there was still Higurashi shit. I didn't even realize it took place there until I saw it all and was wondering why.
>>291816556>absolute hell today post-Rona at any tourist site/major railway station thoughIt really isn't that bad, I had a stopover there like a month ago and the city feels pretty empty if you don't go to Fushimi Inari (why?) or Kiyomizudera (why?).
>>291820286>It really isn't that badNigger have you even SEEN Kyoto Station lately? There's a reason even Japanese schools are starting to look elsewhere for their 修学旅行 it's just way too crowded now.And yeah sure you can go to a random back-alley far from any tourist path and there won't be any tourists. The point is, for sightseeing purposes (i.e. what 99.9% of toruists are going there for) it's now a pretty kuso experience which I wouldn't really recommend.
>>291820286Also>Fushimi Inari (why?)Because when there aren't too many people around it's pretty magical. Hopefully a quiet night climb is still possible at least. When I lived in Kyoto 14~ years ago for the better part of a year, I did more than a few midnight climbs, just me and the torii and some cats. Definitely could understand the appeal of Shinto at those times.
>>291820477>IMG_20261010_101346>10. 10. 2026Oh wow, missed you by a few days. But you know that October 12th was a public holiday in Japan, right? Sports Day.They made all (non-Kodama) Tokaido trains on that weekend all reserved for that reason? Don't travel on the "massive travel weekend", what were you expecting. Also, if you look at your picture, it's just Japanese people, precisely because it's a public holiday.
>>291820546Yes it was a long weekend, but Kyoto station is more or less like that every fucking day now. >Japanese peopleMaybe half if lucky, rest is infini-Taiwanese/Mainland Chink tourists in between the 白人, I'll try to take a more obvious photo next time where you can see how many have those stupid gigantic Chink suitcases that only Chinks use.But considering the number of インバウンド has basically quadrupled from 10~ million/year back in the day to 40~ million/year now, and almost all of them stop by Kyoto, I guess it >can't be helped (unless they just start charging $500/pp for a tourist visa or something to truly stem the tide).
>>291820662Regardless, last time I was at the Shinkansen tracks there (roughly midday on the 8th) it was super fine. The terminal was basically empty. Sure, there were a lot of people, but it was well within capacity.>Maybe half if luckyNo it isn't.Most tourists going to Kyoto are Japanese people and they're taking the train.>But considering the number of インバウンド has basically quadrupled from 10~ million/year back in the day to 40~ million/year now, and almost all of them stop by KyotoThis is a weird thing you are asserting, because it's not true.Kyoto had 60 million tourists in 2025 and 50 million of those were Japanese. International travellers are not the problem in Kyoto. This is the standard Japanese strategy of blaming foreigners for domestic issues. Overtourism being one of them.Don't believe their lies.
>>291820745>50 million of those were JapaneseThat's why I said インバウンド which refers specifically to overseas foreign tourists. Yes there are still a lot of domestic tourists, but an extra 30 million/year gaijin tourists in a mere decade or so (again basically all of who will be stopping by Kyoto because >muh golden route) definitely make it a different experience compared to the past.Unless you're going in one of the more quiet windows (e.g. mid-January or the such), I'd say to just avoid Kyoto altogether these days to be hontou kazoku.
>>291820534Anon that's not a cat. You being able to post a picture of it is anomalous to begin with. You must have insane protection bestowed on you.
>>291820801>That's why I said インバウンド which refers specifically to overseas foreign touristsI am well aware what it means. I am confused why you are using that number, when we have the published report from Kyoto itself.Your feelings-based numbers don't match at all.>30 million/year gaijin tourists There's never been that many, the number is 12 million, with 8 of them staying overnight within the city itself, as shown in this handy chart from the Kyoto municipal city government. And of course the 50 million Japanese tourists, with many of them not staying overnight.Don't argue like a Japanese person, using emotions alone. It's no good.
>>291820745>>291820801Also for Kyoto specifically, the bot couldn't seem to find the 2010 figures, but for 2012 when I lived there compared to 2025, it's 840k foreign tourists -> 12.6 million (which admittedly is a bit interesting would've thought more of the 40 million would be hitting Kyoto up).So averaging it out over the year essentially Kyoto has gone from a baseline foreign tourist count of 70k/month to 1M/month.Yeah Japanese tourists still outnumber foreigners technically, but they're clearly going somewhere other than the big drawcards on the whole then as any visit at Inari/Kiyomizu/Kinkakuji will show you. Also they of course act far better than the Murrimutts/Chink tourists even with their high numbers, making them less noticeable.
>>291820925Ah, same figures it seems, but yeah the point at >>291820936 remains. Personal experience leads me to believe 100M local nip tourists are infinitely more bearable than 10M chinks then, because >Kyoto, Kyoto has changed...
Went to colmar, france for gochiusa.Haven't been to japan yet but I also dunno what anime places I'd wanna visit. Maybe haruhi's school and NNB village.
>>291816754I forgot to check those out because I was so busy doing scene matching that I didn't have enough time to properly explore and have fun, nor did I actually complete my scene matching. Definitely a lesson for me not to do to many things at once when time is limited. But yeah, Higurashi presence is definitely still there.I'm unfortunately reminded of a time when I was standing around an entrance to one Higurashi spot and looking at my phone trying to make sense of the next Higurashi spot when I heard someone mutter some alien (Laos/Vietnamese/Cambodian/whatever that was) language, looked up, and saw what appeared to be a ''''content creator'''' idiot with his two ''''crew members''''. I'm pretty sure I wasn't completely blocking the way. Entitled idiot couldn't even ask nicely in English.>>291819279Damn, long flights definitely sucks. I hope it pays off in the end (though you'll still have to take the return flight). Looking forward to seeing your pictures in a Hibi/mono thread!
Yeah I'm planning to jump off the bridge from anohana
I haven’t seen anyone on 4chan discussing the Yoshida Dormitory at Kyoto University in The Tatami Galaxy.I lived there for a while, and the Yoshida Dormitory is basically a Battlestation.>https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=en16WBZJXbN&back=1Sorry, I’ve lost all my photos of the place, but here’s a 3D tour produced by the Asahi Shimbun Company. (The game room is still my favorite spot, but I’d recommend skipping the bathroom.)If you want to go inside, just speak to the student at the entrance in English. If you're wondering why anyone would want to live here, or if you have any other questions, maybe I can answer them.
>>291820999It sure is from the same 令和7 京都市観光総合調査.Anyway, I went to the Shrine from Hyouka two weeks ago, like everything in Japan it was smaller than it looked.
>>291813272I visited Uji when the final season of Hibike! Euphonium was airing. I got some pretty nice recreation shots. These are just some of the best ones since I don't want to spam the thread. I have more from Hibike, Bakemonogatari, Penguindrum, and Sangatsu no Lion if anybody is interested.
>>291821130
>>291821130This one is my favorite. It came out particularly nice.
>>291821038>If you want to go inside, just speak to the student Interesting, wouldn't have thought non-students could enter, which is why I just settled for photographing what I believed to be the exterior design inspiration for the dorm next to the Eizan line >>291815696Seems it's closing for renovation or the such though also, being built in 1913 and all probably not as earthquake-proof as it needs to be.Would've been cool to have done a semester at Kyoudai, very jelly, I studied at Gaidai myself in Hirakata. Also the Birdman rally is indeed massive fun, do feel a bit sorry for the ones that merely go >lmao xd and plummet straight away though. But it is a bit funny when they do...
>>291813272Excellent thread, OP.

>>291821063How crowded was the autumn festival? >>291813272i did visit japan, but i didnt specifically go to anime locationspicture from comiket when i visited
>>291821468I mean I know humans can only govern a space up to 4.5 tatami, but that doesn't mean the space needs to be filthy. The modern gaidai dorms were super clean at least.Maybe I'd expect a dorm like that in 60's Japan with all the 安保闘争 and general protesting and shit they used to do, but didn't think such a place still existed, no wonder the uni is basically trying to condemn the building it seems.Absolute miracle a fire hasn't torn through it yet and killed everyone in their sleep.
>>291821523>imagine the absolute fucking insect and rodent statePoor Watashi, living in such squalor and being trapped in an endless series of rooms of it...
>>291821183It’s true that the number of students has decreased due to building maintenance issues.I remember that back in the day, there were students from South Korea, Taiwan, and other English-speaking countries, so we often had international cuisine. They hope more people will understand the pressure they face from school policies, and they know why some people want to visit—they welcome everyone, no matter who you are. I remember the rule was that you couldn’t take photos of students, but you could take photos of the common areas in Yoshida .
What a nice thread, the only pilgrimage I've done was to Shimokitazawa to see the Bocchi the Rock mural, but I've accidentally been to most of these places in Uji and Shirakawa-go and it's nice to revisit them this way. Hyouka was apparently set in Takayama
>>291821473It was real nice, though.Still the only way, I'm ever going to one of these in Takayama again is as a participant. Which probably won't happen, but who knows.
>>291821523>>291821445>>291821038>>291821593I suppose there is a reason our protagonist describes its dilapidation as "important cultural property level".
>>291821523There was a fire a while back, and quite a few things got burned haha. I remember we had a lot of interaction with the Kyoto Fire Department at the time.
This week I went to a bunch of places featured in Yama no Susume like Tanigawadake, Akagi, Doai Station, and Ikaho Onsen
>>291821593>>291821445Proportionally speaking, not many people live here. Not many people can stand a place like this. You know, there’s a reason why those who choose to live here love it so much.Plus, there’s one advantage: the monthly rent is only 2,500 yen. The dorm is right next to the school.
>>291821627Surely you've been to Enoshima and Shichirigahama?
>>291821130Very nice pics. I respect people who put the effort to match the shots one-to-one. I didn't watch Hibike but I saw a lot of posters when I was in Uji, so I would assume there's a Hibike spot in every square 100 m or so.>>291821769I'm so jelly. Did you climb from the bottom or did you take the ropeway? Ikaho Onsen will appear in Yuru Camp S4 too, and I'm pretty sure it's at the foot of the Mt. Akina downhill course in Initial D. I remember almost being able to see it on an Assetto Corsa track.
Forgot to reply to a post.>>291821006Cocowa doko?
I did a little It's MyGO tour the last time I was in Japan. Rode the tram, went to Sunshine Aquarium, shouted that I wanted to be human on what was possibly the wrong pedestrian bridge...
>>291821928I took the ropeway because I had 3 hikes planned over 4 days and was afraid of prematurely blowing out my legs. It was raining when I got there and the women at the ticket counter tried to dissuade me from going up, maybe because I didn’t have my rain gear out, but even with the slick rocks and chains it wasn’t too bad.
One thing I did specifically due to animu was visiting the graveyard island in Venice from Aria I guess.>>291821457>tfw I flew there four times last year, including once just for a 3-day long weekend to catch a raibu for my favourite bandGod I love not being a SEAmonkey.
>>291821928Yeah, most of them were by the river, so it was pretty convenient to shoot lol. However, the most famous spot is a 20 minute hike with no lighting at nighttime. I was surprised at the amount of promo material, but I guess I shouldn't have been since it was currently airing.
>>291822409flying 12 hours is pretty annoying though.

One that's still on the bucket list for me is Takehara, the city from Tamayura.
>>291822409Did you have an encounter with a faceless ghost, anon? That episode gave me the chills. I will never forgive them for making such a genuinely scary episode in my comfy healing anime.

And whatever this kuso anime is.
Flying Witch's author has a good taste choosing Hirosaki as the setting. I wish I could've tasted the apple pie at this cafe because it sold out by the time I reached there. I wonder if anyone here could tell me how delicious it was.
>>291822784Also if a concert counts as an animu pilgrimage, I guess I did this too.
Not my pic.
>>291823140I would love to go to Aomori but it's so far out of the way man. I'm waiting for the Shinkansen to get to Sapporo at least before going to northern Honshu and Hokkaido. Hopefully I will be able to go in a season that's not the worst of winter by then.
>>291819546ef?
>>291823299Just fly, it's like 90 minutes from Haneda?Only annoying part is the train from Sapporo to Hakodate.
>>291823378And that's exactly what I wanna avoid. I still have Shikoku and Kyushu to do anyway so who knows maybe JR stops twiddling their thumbs in the meantime.
>>291823299It'll be a long while yet before the Sapporo extension is completed. But it's only four hours on the Shinkansen to Aomori what's the big deal with it? >>291823436>Shikoku>Kyushujust flyDomestic flights are only slightly more expensive than Shinkansen tickets.
>>291823299>>291823523Yeah, the Tohoku shinkansen is ridiculously fast and Tokyo station to Shin-Aomori station takes just over 3 hours. I started and ended my Tohoku trip in Tokyo entirely by train and I had no complaints at all.
>>291813272Got on this thread to ask why the hell you would post the Federal Reserve building. For context:
>>291823527I don't like flying. I have to do so for 28 hours just to get to Tokyo. I hate airports. I hate airport bureaucracy. I hate taking 30 minutes just to get off the fucking plane after it lands. It ends up taking the same time in the end except the SKS offers a minimum of humanity to the travelers. It's not a money thing, and since I have the entire south (or west I guess) of the country still to visit I see no reason to rush to the other side.
>>291823656I just get insanely annoyed taking the same train I already took in the opposite direction. That's why it has to be flying for me.
>>291823679>I just get insanely annoyed taking the same train I already took in the opposite directionWell that sounds pretty retarded. Personally I must've ridden the Sunrise Seto/Izumo overnight 30+ times by now between Tokyo and the west.
>>291823897Just fly out west?Any city you want out of Haneda in like an hourMaybe I'll ride the Sunrise next time, but I hate sleeper trains and I doubt the Japanese ones are better than the ones I have at home.

>>291824936I'm used to domestic European flights, which are the worst flight market and I still won't get a sleeper here (the best sleeper market).Japanese flights are great, no reason to look for alternatives.

>>291825190>Japanese flights are great, no reason to look for alternativesToplel, why do you think the Shinkansen was a success then (well for the most part, till politicians made JNR build some meme lines and bankrupted them)?Once you add in time to the airport + security + waiting at the gate + actual flight time + getting to the city from the usually isolated airports, it's really no faster than the Shinkansen from Tokyo -> Aomori at the top, or Tokyo -> Hakata to the west. And even when going further than that, the extra comfort is worth a mere extra hour or two of travel. Why would you opt to fly unless going somewhere that takes maybe >6 hours by rail?>the best sleeper marketThe EU/America isn't the best in any form of public transport, even if you have a lot of sleepers/etc, because you also have a lot of niggers/sandniggers on them which ruins the experience (in addition to punctuality being far less reliable than Japan). If you're not seeing Japan by rail on its immaculate trains, you're doing it wrong.
>>291813272i don't go outside, i left my city once in my whole life
>>291825715>why do you think the Shinkansen was a success thenBecause it was built the correct time and services high intensity routes in a reasonable amount of time. You can fly Haneda - Itami in like an hour btw.If you add all the nonsense around flying, you're about as fast as to the Nozomi service going from Tokyo to Shin Osaka at a slightly lower price. They fly that route 30 times a day.And as distance, and especially distance from the main Shinkansen routes increases flights just outcompete it by a mile.Haneda - Shin Chitose is 90 minutes of flight, with virtually same same issues at Shin Chitose as in Itami. Meanwhile, the fastest train route is taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Shin Hakodate, taking the 20 minute train to Hakodate and then taking another 3 hour limited express from Hakodate to Sapporo. And let's not talk about Tokyo - Kochi by train. I think I'll just fly, thanks.>even if you have a lot of sleepers/etc, because you also have a lot of niggers/sandniggers on them which ruins the experienceCan't say I ever saw any of that personally. Also, just get a private room. What are you, poor?>If you're not seeing Japan by rail on its immaculate trains, you're doing it wrong.I've spent more than enough time in Japan to know when and where to avoid trains.
went to umihotaru because it was in gridman.the taxi driver was quite nonplussed when i told him where i wanted to go. (it's a highway rest stop) and somewhat reluctant to take me there since i would effectively be stranded there. after some translating he agreed to take me there and give me an hour to look around.i profusely thanked him for this.extremely lucky with timing and hit the sunset perfectly.

I'd go to japan but the tickets alone are like 2 grand for one way.How do people afford this consistently, drug money needs to be investigated.
>>291826571>I will have to find someone to go withI strongly advise you not to.Chances are your idea of what's fun in Japan is completely different from what other people want to do. Last time I flew out, I watched a bunch of movies at the cinema (chances are people you take won't know Japanese and not enjoy it), ate 500 yen zarusoba every few hours and just aimlessly walked around Tokyo for eight hours a day thinking about how despite most of the rivers and channels having been filled in, Tokyo is still a city of rivers.>>291826660>How do people afford this consistentlyI live next to an airport and I have a job that pays around 3.5k a month after ALL of my costs.

>>291826571>Are there some guides/books/sites that you can recommend for travelling around Japan with a places worth visiting?I genuinely don't know. I mostly travel on vibes and I sort of have a decent knowledge of Japan and what's fun there and especially what I like. The thing you should be asking yourself is, what are you interested in and how can you do it?If you want to go to anime places, just look up some places from shows you like. If you like anime stuff, go to Nakano or Ikebukuro or hell even Akihabara, you'll have fun.Japan is a very open sort of destination, where you can just run into fun and interesting stuff randomly.
>>291813427I liked Saitama, it's a good place to walk around. Want to return there someday.
>>291813272Great thread, OP. See lots of places I've been to, lots still on my wish list. The best places for me were K-ON and NNB related. I think I read something about that sometime ago.
>>291826211>Haneda - Shin Chitose is 90 minutes of flight, with virtually same same issues at Shin Chitose as in Itami. Meanwhile, the fastest train route is taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Shin Hakodate, taking the 20 minute train to Hakodate and then taking another 3 hour limited express from Hakodate to Sapporo.Obviously Tokyo -> Sapporo, being 8 hours+, is still owned by the airlines (the rule is generally anything 4 hours or less, JR gets the majority of the market). Yes there are cases where flying makes more sense but if you're sticking to Honshu/Kyushu there aren't many (unless you're going from Kagoshima straight to Aomori or something silly). Also the Hokuto stops at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, you don't need to go into Hakodate to catch it bwaka, just the one transfer and two trains from Tokyo -> Sapporo even if it's a bit of a long journey.>Also, just get a private roomStill need to wait at the platform with (sand)niggers, hear them in the hall, probably hear them through the walls, etc. You can't escape them in that shithole continent.

>>291833293>Ryukishi recently went there to help with a tourism thing this yearFucking why? It's already drowning in tourists there, literally a never ending stream of chinkland buses these days dumping their loads onto the town.
the only places I got to visit specifically for being anime locations were the kimi no na wa stairs and radio kaikan. Next time I visit japan I'll try to visit more anime locations. I wanna go to the haruhi cafe, even if it's not the exact same place
Apparently this shrine (Kibitsu Shrine in Okayama) appeared in Zatsu Tabi manga.
I never got to explore Toyohashi. I wonder what kind of city it is.
Great thread
Not exactly a pilgrimage, but this is the island where the girls stayed in Non Non Biyori the Movie: Vacation.
>>291813272I’ve stayed on the hotel ship that’s briefly in From Up on Poppy Hill, but that was before I saw the movie
>>291840426Why didn't you stay at the inn that the girls stayed at?
>>291813311Did you jump to the turtles?I prefer not to visit anime locations. I don't think anime is all that good, certainly not worth ritualizing. Though I did walk around outside the Shaft building, a lot of backgrounds from Bakemonogatari are just pictures of there. I really wanted to see what inspired the design of namishiro park, but I didn't see anything remotely similar.

>>291840827I'm talking about the "challenge" turtles.
>>291840669Ishigaki is a better base of operations. Staying on Taketomi is pretty expensive and there's literally nothing to do there besides walk around the historical re-enactment neighborhood.
I lived down the street from a somewhat famous road that made it into Monogatari, second season I think. Other than that, a lot of minor 聖地巡礼 over the years
>>291823299>>291823436>Waiting for sapporo chokutsuuOk. You might even beat the Chuo Linear.
>>291836910>Still need to wait at the platform with (sand)niggers, hear them in the hall, probably hear them through the walls, etc. You can't escape them in that shithole continent.I don't know what you are talking about.
>>291836910>the rule is generally anything 4 hours or less, JR gets the majority of the marketYes, but the number of "4 hour or less" routes point to point routes starting or ending at cities with major airports is a lot smaller than it looks.
I'd like to travel but the costs are beyond anything I could ever manage.
>>291836598There might be a bus going there the long way around, but pic related is the view from the main road below I took before I started riding up there by bike. It's very close to Koyasan, so there's likely to be something that can get you at least within a few miles.
>>291836598>>291842035Very steep, very narrow. Did have a wild pheasant or some Japanese equivalent run next to the road ahead of me though. Stopped when I stopped to take a picture of it, then continued for a while. Odd bird.
>>291836598>>291842060The villages are Kamiamano and Shimoamano (upper and lower amano). There's a great big temple there, and fields all round. Also people selling local produce in there unmanned stands you often see in rural Japan. Bought some tomatoes, obviously. Not sure about the dagashiya, could have simply retired. It's in a very dense residential area, so I saw no reason it couldn't still get kids buying sweets.
>>291837023Thanks Anon! Jotted those down. I'm going in late March/early April, gonna get me some hanami. Got any anime related recommendations? That katsuo looks amazing, definitely gonna try it. Best dish I had last time around was either the magurodon in Oma, right at the top of Tohoku before I went over to Hokkaido, or this houtou in Fujiyoshida. Really hard to pick.
>>291823299I would highly recommend Aomori if you can make it. Some of the best sights, especially in the rural parts, I've seen. The temple on Osorezan blew my mind, and the Takayama Inari Jinja is just a better version of Fushimi Inari Taisha imo. The Neputa Village Museum in Hirosaki is also a ton of fun, they let you play taiko if you catch the shamisen performance. Also, to add to the anime locations, there's Seibi-en on the way to Hirosaki from Aomori. The garden is genuinely wonderful, and the reception lobby has a few of Miyazaki's sketches for the movie.

Hard to find it done so well in other parts of the country. No specific animu sights to recommend, though Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama supposedly served as an inspiration for some Ghibli shitto I believe.>>291842337>Takayama Inari Jinja is just a better version of Fushimi Inari Taisha imoI mean, it's nice, but it's much smaller in scale and a pretty different experience.Perhaps preferable to a daytime visit to Fushimi today merely due to the amount of tourists though, but Fushimi is definitely the more impressive shrine still at the end of the day.Taikodani, Yuutoko, and Toyokawa Inari are also worth a visit if you want to tick off the big 5 Inari shrines nationwide.>Neputa Village MuseumOr just go there when the actual Neputa is on. Crowds aren't too much of a worry as there's plenty of streetside room that they parade down.
>>291842483>Dogo OnsenThat one's on the list if I end up going to Matsuyama. Really wanted to visit the one in Gunma, but that one is just so out of the way..>I mean, it's nice, but it's much smaller in scale and a pretty different experience. That's what I liked about it. I went to Fushimi at 7am, right as it opened, and it was still too crowded for my taste. The shrines below were nice and all, but as you go up to the top you can see the torii and their surroundings being more and more dilapidated. Takayama seemed like a concentrated version of what's best at Fushimi without the ugly parts, and best of all you have a view of the torii procession at the end. It did lack the cats though.>go there when the actual Neputa is onThat's a hard thing to schedule if you don't live in Japan. I did catch Obon in Kyoto and the Yoshida fire festival though, really fun experiences.
>>291842638Well as mentioned earlier ITT I'd generally recommend a midnight climb now merely so you can have the mountain (hopefully) mostly to yourself. But two hours of walking up and down a mountain of torii (albeit at lower densities higher up) is still a lot different than the 5-minute stroll through the ones at Takayama. Both nice experiences but yeah don't think they're really comparable.>best of all you have a view of the torii procession at the endWell an aerial view at Fushimi is difficult yes, but can do other angles.>hard thing to schedule if you don't live in JapanDoes your work not allow you to take your annual leave whenever you want?I know lots of tourists avoid summer, but the festivals are great fun, just need to dodge the typhoons and their after-effects sometimes.
>>291842722>Both nice experiences but yeah don't think they're really comparable. That's fair. Great pic btw!>Does your work not allow you to take your annual leave whenever you want?It does, but I like to travel by bike and camp, since it gives me complete freedom of movement. The downside though is I have to plan quite far ahead if I want to make sure to be in a location at a specific date. Also short, less than a month long trips don't really make sense. But on the other hand you get so many opportunities to hang out with locals and see random unknown rural villages, I much prefer this type of travel.>lots of tourists avoid summerI wish that were the case. I'm sure it is to some extent, but I was there from late June to early September, and any moderately well known tourist spot was pretty packed. Tohoku spoiled me in that regard, probably also a reason why I have such fond memories from there.>festivals are great fun, just need to dodge the typhoons and their after-effects sometimesYep, had to flee Yamanashi right after the fire festival and in two days booked it to some friends in Saitama, literal hours before flooding began in Tokyo '^^ Sheltered for almost a week.
>>291821519do you suggest going to the summer or winter comiket? i went in october and it was already mad hot, cant fucking imagine it in august
>>291842993Everywhere, except Wakkanai, is sweltering hot in August and from the stories I've heard summer comiket is stank, so would probably aim for winter if I had the choice. Not that I'd ever attend, browsing porn with a bunch of randoms would just feel weird as hell no idea how people manage that.>>291842987>bike and campDamn, always dreamed of doing something like that but the lack of comfort always put me off. Cycling the Kibi plain and Shimanami Kaido were tiring enough, would die especially in the warmer months myself. Most /fit/ thing I ever did was the 5-day Kohechi from the base of Koyasan to Honguu Taisha on foot, and that was enough.Too old for such stuff now anyway so I'll stick to rail passes and rental cars I guess. Though would like to do the Shikoku 88 someday if I had a solid month to just walk it.But yeah seems you do a very different slower style of travel than me then. I just make use of the planes, trains, and automobiles to pack the schedule with as much as possible.
>>291813272I spend a few days in Oarai (Girls und Panzer) every time I visit Japan. I've also been to Hanno and a few mountains in Yama no Susume, Saga (Zombie Land Saga), and Kure (Kancolle).
>>291843218>from the base of Koyasan to Honguu Taisha on footOof, all those mountains in 5 days are no joke. For me cycling's far easier than walking, that would wreck me. I had about enough of mountain climbs by that point, especially after Nagano, so I just did Shimoamano and Koyasan. Maybe I'll go along the coast this time around. Thanks for that map, gives me some great data for route planning. Is each colour one trip? Man, even though my next trip is going to focus on parts west of Kyoto, there's still so much in the east I missed..This was my route in 24, not the best visual representation though. Bailed on Hokkaido because I quickly realised it's more of a car/train-island. Things were just too damn far apart for it to be enjoyable by bike.
>>291813272I probably will when i develop severe mental illness but right now no

Oh just remembered Yakushima was technically the basis for some of the forests in Mononoke too, so guess that counts as a pilgrimage of sorts.>>291843886>literally top of Honshu to Wakayama by bicycleYou're insane anon but seems fun (if one is fit enough), is each coloured line segment a day of cycling then? And yeah the colours on mine are different years (except the blue which was a few grouped together, should split them out) but don't rely on it too much for sane route planning. I always have a rail pass so just bounce around on the Shinkansen (or Sunrise or Ginga for that sweet free overnight accommodation) in rather illogical ways at times. But yeah I imagine the coast would be the prettiest way to travel by bike, not too much elevation change compared to the mountainous interior either would assume. Could do the Shikoku 88 on bicycle too I assume, maybe in 2 weeks instead of 2 months.
>>291842035>>291842060>>291842103Damn. When you say bike, you mean a bicycle, right? I'm assuming >>291842987 is you. I take it that you always fly with your bike rather than renting one for your entire trip? I was hoping there were a bike rental and a popular cycling route nearby, but I guess you were just there as a bikepacker. Mad respect.
>>291830798That sucks anon.I didn't have as many misses, luckily, but one I remember was trying to get to the Yuru Camp lighthouse south of Hamanako, and because there was some work being done on the only road leading to it, they would for whatever reason not let me pass, even across the fields.Oh, and just before that I tried to go eat unadon at the restaurant by the lake, got there really early too, but it was closed due to the owner taking a vacation that exact week.>Machikado MazokuDo you by any chance have that map now? Visited Tama before I read the manga, but if I get the chance I really wanna go again.
I went to a Hanayamata pilgrimage to Kamakura. Was most looking forward to visiting my wife's soba restaurant, but unfortunately it was closed during that day, and I was visiting with a friend so I didn't want to bother him to go for a second time. I went again the next year and made sure to check if the restaurant was open beforehand. Was worth the wait. The Slam Dunk movie was still pretty recent at the time so there were a ton of Chinese tourists at the railway crossing.
Had a great time in Japan last year. Really want to upload some pics but I'm quite busy at the moment. I went to Sapporo, Kushiro then all the way up to Kyushu (Fukuoka and Kumamoto) for the usual tourist recommendation and anime pilgrimage. I've been to Toyako Onsen to see the star observatory for Sora no Method but shame I couldn't get inside, but it was fun that I was alone with two girls who were cleaning the area. I also went to Oarai to see Garupan stuff. Town is dead as fuck, but I enjoyed the view in Marine Tower. Went to Takehara in Hiroshima for the second time, rushed since I got up late, but got to eat okonomiyaki again. There are some pilgrimage I plan to do next year like visiting Naoshima and Ogijima for Summer Pockets, the streets of Call of the Night and Chainsawman Rezehen, Mono, and Hibimeshi.
>>291844345Also visited Koganei, Tokyo for Ochikobore Fruit Tart locations. They still had a poster in the vegetable stall.
>>291844024>coloured line segment a day of cycling thenMore or less. Sometimes my phone bugged out a bit and it got split into two, but most of the time not.>don't rely on it too much for sane route planningOh, no worries there, I just like having dots on the map so I can then fill my A to B with the interesting ones.>Shikoku 88 on bicycleCertainly not all of them. I'm weary of visiting too many temples and shrines after last time, since it made them less and less special to look at as time went on. Though I did go kinda overboard in the beginning. I'll probably pick out some close to my route, and leave the others for a different trip perhaps. Thanks for mentioning Takayama was part of a set of Inari shrines btw, didn't know that. Added the other 3 to the map.>>291844062Yep, that's me. Considered renting or buying a bike there at first, but I'm glad I didn't. Would have been a nightmare to get something workable set up. I was shocked at how rudimentary the average bike shop in Japan was, honestly. I had to have some repairs done twice on the trip and it was a serious undertaking finding a shop which could do something as basic as replacing a snapped spoke. But then again, 95%+ of bikes there are purely for city use, so it kind of makes sense. So yeah, it flies with me and ANA let me forfeit one piece of luggage for sports equipment and didn't try to gouge me like all the other airlines. I believe it's still the case, hope that holds.
I've only done the Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka triangle so I can't say I've really done much pilgrimaging but I had a lot of fun seeing places like Shibuya, Kiyomizu-dera and Dotonbori in person after seeing them in anime and video games so often. It'd be nice to visit some more niche places but I feel like I'd need to have a lot of money and time to spend on an extended trip. As it is I still feel like I left a lot undone in those three cities and would like to spend more time exploring each one. That aside, how much planning do you guys do? Do you rewatch a show and go "that's a nice shot, let's hunt that spot down and recreate it" or do you just pick a city and start walking around looking for familiar sights?
>>291845386>Do you rewatch a show and go "that's a nice shot, let's hunt that spot down and recreate it"I haven't been to Japan but you can find scenes from anime/manga if you look up the series name and add 聖地巡礼 to it, which is the term the Japanese use to describe visiting the "real" locations that a work referenced.

>>291846186anikoto
>>291847836Ah, is that new? When I was there, there was only a map of Yuru Camp locations around Hamanako. Found this Gabriel dropout sheet in one of the huts on the beach though, that was a welcome surprise.
>>291847836>a very rudimentary way of packingThere's a weight limit on an individual piece of luggage. The bike's steel framed, so if something goes badly wrong it can be weld-fixed, but with all the attachments that means it's around 16kg by itself + ~4kg for the box. And its much too big for a hard case, I think those can only fit road-bikes. Not to mention you then have to store that somewhere, while a cardboard box is comparatively easily sourced from bike shops. The issue with packing ends up being more about filling the space so the contents are fixed in place (hence the pipe insulation). Pretty much all the luggage ends up being in a separate bag. Pic is the assembly right at the start at Haneda, to the befuddlement of all surrounding japanese.

Just got back from my first trip over to Japan. It was pretty short, being only a couple days in Tokyo, but I was able to make it to the big Umineko spots. Almost missed out on making it inside the mansion, though, since we made it there about 5 minutes before closing, and the lady only let us in because she felt bad for us.
>>291860672It would have been nice to make it a couple months earlier when the higanbana were in bloom for the ryukishi double dip, but I was just happy that there were any roses in bloom for us to see
>>291813272I really want to visit Japan someday, ideally for an extended period of time, but I'm not sure how to manage that with my shitty deadend job that leaves me both perpetually poor and without much spare time. I guess I'll die filled with regrets.
>>291813272I bought some books in the same shop as Usagi Serenity Tsukino.
>>291813311that place is really nice spot. i always visit there every chance I get. summer/autumn/winter
Gozan no Okuribi. i almost missed this once a year event. i was so happy I made it
that one cafe from Hyouka. i even ordered the same thing
>>291862186>>291813311Based Kamogawa appreciators. And while you're right that the biggest sights in Kyoto are unbearably tourist-filled, there's still dozens of other temples and shrines that are very nice and still only lightly visited. Walk along the river from Shimogamo to Kamigamo and it's gigacomfy.
>>291852941I totally forgot about Ueno Park and Ameyoko market. I explored almost every nook and cranny but I didn't care about "anime pilgrimages" at that time.>>291859916I haven't visited Amanohashidate, but yeah, probably only Zatsu Tabi. Pretty nice when a spot you visited before appears in an anime like Zatsu Tabi.>>291862186Playing in the water in the summer must feel good. I saw some photos on xitter of JCs playing there which is nice but posting them here is probably off-topic or perhaps even creepy
>>291862889>Walk along the river from Shimogamo to Kamigamo and it's gigacomfy.true. its a must do thingnear kamogawa delta, there is a Tamako Market Pilgrimage district. at the end of the district, there is a public diary book that you can write in about the show

>>291821018>>291830798>anohanai visited the bridge in August, it was so fucking hot. and i didnt see any people from the small station to that bridge, only a few cars went by. it was creepy
>>291859916>>291863276>Amanohashidatei went there in august(hell). the line to the top is so long that people are lining up along the road. at the top, the place is kinda mid, and there are many kind of attractions there
Only "I KNOW THAT THING" tourism I did in Japan is I went to all the major Tokyo and Osaka locations in the Yakuza/RGG game series.Kabukicho feels so small irl even when walking, not running.>>291821769Riding on the bullet train and seeing the countryside makes you realize WHY everyone lives in megacities along the coast, there's fucking no where else to live besides mountains and forests that are full of maneater bears
>>291852941When me and my mom went to Japan it was the middle of march so a big festival was going on in Ueno Park, lots of people there. We went to go see the musems in the park.
>>291864234Is it even worth visiting and is there anything else to do there? It's kinda out of the way unless I'm going to visit Tottori and do a Sea of Japan trip.
>>291864234>i went there in august(hell). My mother constantly bitched about the cold the time we were there >>291864391, which is weird because it wasn't even THAT cold, mid 50s sometimes reaching 60. And she grew up in Jersey, it gets way colder there than Japan does. I was fine, I just wore a beanie and a jacket. However summers is what would keep me from ever living in Japan. I don't mind the cold at all but I can't stand the heat, especially humid heat.
>>291864579>It's kinda out of the way yeah i wasted a day there, from kyoto. it was so packed that i couldnt enjoy things, so i bailed.>is there anything else to do therenot much, there are plenty of attractions behind that photo, i guess that was the reason its packed. if you are a loner like me, its not worth it.
>>291864234>people are lining up along the roadDisgusting, went in summer 2014 and was no one.>>291864579Can combine it with a stay at Kinosaki onsen or the Tottori sand dunes/museum which are both nice stops, but yeah mostly just the view and sandbar walk there.
I will be going to JP for the year end with family and hopefully can sneak in a visit to see Hopeful Stakes at Nakayama.
>>291865162Well big races are usually on sundays so keep that in mind.Lovcen jobbed so fucking hard yesterday
>>291860901don't waste time waiting for the perfect opportunity, go even if it's not as much time as you'd prefer. I visited last year for the first time and while I only got to visit what most likely is just basic stuff, it changed my life.
How is the country for travel by foot? Like long distance paths and stuff. If I went I would just want to spend two or three weeks walking to places along a route I'd plan. Staying at whatever basic accom, campsite or just sneakycamping(highly doubt this is a thing in Japan).
>>291865260I am more worried about tickets since I remembered someone at /umaJP/ saying the big races can be popular and you need to book one in advance. That's why I gave up on Arima Kinen entirely. That was disappointing. Let's see how he does later assuming if he goes to Arima or JC.
>>291860901This is sort of me except I could afford it (well, it wouldn't be the smartest financial decision but it wouldn't bankrupt me) but the real problem is I care for aging family members and wouldn't be able to leave them alone for a long trip. Also I don't think I could physically or mentally withstand an 11 hour flight. I am a very bad flyer and I think it may actually drive me insane.
>>291843218anon wut
>>291865518Sounds like you'll enjoy walking the full Nakasendo route.
>>291866135Well since it seems like no one will get to visit Chernobyl ever again it's the only option if you want to stand in front of a destroyed nuclear reactor.TEPCO offer guided educational tours talking about how hard they're working to decontaminate the area/release the infinite tanks of radioactive water they built up safely, and it includes a quick 15~ min stop in front of the reactor buildings themselves (about two dental x-rays worth supposedly but the geiger counters do start chirping a lot when you reach the observation platform). Also no private photos allowed so you need to rely on the ones the TEPCO reps take and email you, which are low-res and suck.
>>291859848Flyers are somewhat of a Yoshida tradition—as long as they’re posted in one place everyone will see them without the need for announcements. The school entrance is often adorned with left wing anti-war slogans from the Yoshida Dormitory; even though they create a stark contrast with the otherwise pristine school entrance, people tolerate them even if they don’t fully agree—this is actually part of Kyoto University’s commitment to freedom of expression. The flyer tradition in the game room is also quite interesting: if you set a record in a game that no one can beat, you can post it on the wall and decades later your flyer will still be there.
>>291860091Someone keeps peacocks and goats in the open area outside the dorm (that should fit your description of a weirdo). When I was there, there were only chickens—they’d wake me up before my alarm clock so I never needed one.
>>291865518Outside of Hokkaido, I'd say that's very much doable. Especially if you occasionally combine it with rail. There's very often a sidewalk even on country roads. If not, speed limits in Japan are quite low compared to other countries, and the Japanese are by and large cautious drivers. This part at least shouldn't be an issue.>Staying at whatever basic accom, campsite or just sneakycamping(highly doubt this is a thing in Japan).Completely doable. Basic accommodation can be very cheap, especially outside of big cities. I've mostly stayed at business or capsule hotels if I wasn't camping, and it was rare to pay more than 4000 yen a night.Campsites are often in the 500-1500 yen range, though in certain areas like the Nakasendo they can start rivaling business hotel prices. Also, a word of caution with campsites: don't fully rely on google maps for accurate times and campsite locations, double check them with a site like jpcamp or similar. I often turned up somewhere that was closed, abandoned, or even seemingly nonexistent. Also, the majority of campsites will have check-in until 5pm, which can be very annoying, but I've often arrived later, camped for the night, and paid for my stay in the morning without much fuss.As for stealth camping, I believe it's technically illegal, but unless you're going about it like a retard, it's also fine. I've seen people stealth camp even in urban environments without issue, but out in the country, away from major roads, I've never had problems, even though I only did it a handful of times. Obviously don't start fires and clean up after yourself though. The thing you might hear is the bear warnings in the Tohoku region, some campsites I visited were even closed exactly because of that. But ironically, the only time I've come across a bear was as it was crossing a street in northern Nagano (no longer Tohoku), in the outskirts of a fairly urban area. My feeling is the danger's overblown, but you do you.
>>291821266There were a bunch of people when I went up there and I'll be forever mad I couldn't get a nice picture.
>>291857410>anon is transported far away via horror-tunnel
>>291867249Wait you actually STAYED there? They let the gaijin exchange students stay in that doubtlessly rodent and bedbug ridden little-Kowloon Kyoani-tier-fire-deathtrap? Gog damn PR disaster waiting to happen.
>>291867269Wait, that's a Hibike spot? Your angle felt very familiar so I looked through my photos and there it was. I had some free time and wanted to do some light hiking and stopped there as my highest point. Didn't know it was an anime location. That's so cool.
>>291867426Yoshida's op here. You might be surprised, but to live there, you have to go through an interview first and the interviewers are students. The university has long wanted to renovate the area, but the students refuse to move out. There have been numerous legal battles over the years (the university even lost one of them). In any case, there are definitely far fewer students living there now.Back then, I could basically ignore that kind of environment. But now, I absolutely couldn’t stand the filth and the leftist students of that era (even though I consider that kind of leftism to be the best kind).
