I still don't get why MC is able to pull off apparently amazing stuff despite his poor magical power. Sure, he trained hard, his control is good and he's put a lot of thought into how to best use what power he has, and I can believe him being more competent than his stats would indicate, but a year of training being enough to learn to do things that amaze this elf who's presumably had plenty of contact with skilled mages seems like a stretch. Is there some kind of an explanation for that later on, or is it just protagonist exceptionalism we're not supposed to think too hard about?

I've quite liked the way MC's powers have been handled so far, for the most part, with him mostly actually feeling like he's using a small amount of power cleverly, efficiently and with finesse. I hope he stays that way, or at least that if he becomes overpowered at some point, there'll be some kind of a sensible progression towards it.

Maybe Lucy's mom too), but during volume 10 he powerlevels to way beyond everyone else (except the demon kings) and by volume 11 he is head and shoulders above everyone but the goddesses

>>291848947There are 2 things happening here. makoto is grinding his water aptitude beyond what a regular person would do (we haven't been shown this but every day he goes to the local fountain and spends several hours playing around with the water to raise is water magic mastery). since going beyond mastery lvl 50 does nothing to shorten your chant speed or to increase the power of your spells, most see 50 as the hard cap and train something else. makoto is also a legit rpg player, so he does optimize every little detail of his build (he has like 3 points of mana, so he learned thieves skills that use no mana to move around, he uses low level skills like mist and the ice spears and strategically targets the eyes of the monsters)the other thing is that this elf is a bottomless pit of mana, due to her being half elf half demon, so she hasn't been able to properly train her mastery at all.
