If we take the demon's backstory of Laios at face value then Kabru and everyone else really had good reasons to be wary of him and his interest in monsters. The reader knows Laios as a quirky, autistic but ultimately good natured guy so they may not think much about Laios contributing to crime by paying his former comrades but this puts it into a different perspective. If Laios really has that much disdain, rather than disinterest, for humans then maybe he was more aware of where his money went than the reader might think. Especially if we use the Lions definition of monsters as beings with the express purpose of killing humans. Just saying, the alternate universe of dungeon lord Laios may have been a lot closer than one might think.

Laios and the other characters make it pretty clear that it was a slow learning process for him. If we just toss away the demon's words then we're left with zero insight into Laios inner workings pretty much.
