yeah, would be interesting to see how this plays out. will mana vanish, will magic stay the same or change, maybe spirit magic will become the main way to do magic. Maybe "infinite" gradually forgets how to communicate with humans (meaning the dark/ancient magic ceases to exist)

I have a lefty interpretation that it is about the closing days of european imperialism, and how the wonders and luxuries that came with it gradually begins to fade away with the movements of independence of the former colonies, though that is how I see it for LotR, what could it be for dungeon meshi?

I love the resolution to Mithrun's character arc. It's so wholesome to see him regain the will to live on and the thing that cured his soul and outlook was an unwitting drive-by foot analogy. It's so pleasant to see how well Kui manages to wrap things up and keep with DM's themes, foot metaphors, but also the value of bonds. I can never not smile at this part.
>>
>>291964483
For all praise DM got, I think this demon<->magic part is the most underdeveloped. I guess Kui leave it as ambiguous because she herself doesn't know the answer, in contrast to all other questions where she would happily over all details

What do you think that the waning of mana/magic in Dungeon Meshi means? I can kinda see what Tolkien means with it going away over time, but what do you think it is about for Ryoko kui?
thanks for replying
>>
>>291965248
One of its listed powers was shapeshifting. It probably had more to do with wanting to hide out of shame and embarassment, and that post-nut clarity of "oh god I can't actually live like this, they'd never stop hunting me"
>>
>>291965091

Tolkien was writing english mythology, magic going away to become the real world was a way to make it fit more into the real world.
And dungeon meshi's magic does not go away,
>>
>>291964852
>when that hope kicks in
>>
>>291965397
Mana in DM never actually disappears. It just becomes part of nature and ceases to be a demon. So I think that could also be a metaphor for scientific advancement. As we understand natural phenomena more, they stop feeling like demons and start feeling like just nature.

The supplementary material really does a lot of heavy lifting to endear the extended cast to the reader. It's the one big thing I think the anime adaption fumbles, them not including some kind of extra shorts segment or side web show, where they play out those skits.

Fleki is in jail for a bullshit crime. Otter too, I doubt she was actually trafficking elves instead of lesser races.
Lycion and Cithis have life sentences for murder, even if they get some kind of pardon the best they can hope for is a parole deal.
>>
>>291964782
>Why is that?
Nihilism – God is dead. And we have killed him. The idea that, as we understand more and more about the world, there are fewer and fewer grand mysteries/superstitions that can be left. No longer are we allowed to be children in awe of the unknown, but adults left only with an largely grounded, immutable reality. The forces of nature now tamed and made mundane through the ingenuity of Man. Obviously the more we learn, the more we realize we still don't know a lot, but the romance that the world had, even as recently as 50 years ago, has diminished so much as to be completely absent in the modern age. There's a lot going on under the hood with DM, the nature of desires/fulfillment of desires and the impact they have on individuals, the ephemerality of life/learning to let go of the things we've lost/make the most of what we have, etc etc, but my brain's too shot to really put it all together right now.

Magic vanishing is more about the passage of time/ending of some era but I think it mostly depends on the creator. Mizukami uses it to represent an end to childhood usually, the Greeks might've used it to refer to the Bronze Age Collapse, and the Sumerians for the rise of agriculture. Anyways I don't really think it's a big theme in Dungeon Meshi compared to everything about nature, food, and eating.

>>291965363
I agree, his arc is one of the best in the manga, which is really notable considering just how well rounded the whole ending is for almost all it's characters. Also, it was him who made me realize I fucking love the archetype of revenge driven yet quirky man (together with Levi)

>>291965397
NTA, but I see the waning of the magic as another alteration of the status quo set in the world after the events of the manga, although one that will probably not be as extreme, like it says in >>291964483 magic will probably remain in the world, but now it will be harder to control without a "will" to canalyze the desires of the magicians who use it

I thought the appetite thing was because he’s still a 7 ton monster underneath and he has to eat for that size. And the curse is that other monsters see Laios as he really is and run away like with Kensuke and the Red Dragon. [\spoiler]
>>
>>291964782
even the ancient greeks told stories about how they lived in a world where most of the magic was gone compared to the era of heroes.
Course it doesn't help that whenever a 'civilised' culture encounters a people that live a life where none of them feel like living amongst magic is a thing of the past, they immediately try to destroy that culture and force their own ways onto those peoples
In this sense we can see a parallel to how the adult craves a return to how they felt in childhood when stories felt real, but loathe to see an adult that just lives like that rather than pining for it while killing themself slowly
>>
>>291965267
>>291965469
You could argue that both of those things are just residual effects from becoming his OC. My headcannon is that the curse is that Laios and company will live the rest of their lives as humans(whom the demon views as nothing but creatures who exist just to starve and die)

More like why wouldn't anyone be aggro at Cabaret? This retard has been fucking things up at every turn. And he's right, he has known Mithrun for literally like one or two days.

This feels like a bullshit copout. So Thistle could also gain new desires? The demon can just decide later on he wants to eat again after all?

>I am just scraps, I want to die, I have literally nothing left
>yes! that's right!
Kill yourself kabru, genuinely.

That's something that strikes me as well about the series, how consistently she sticks to the food stuff and manages to make it fit the situation all throughout. That and it's kinda unreal to see a mangaka do so much just right in a final stretch of their manga. Endings are often something where many serialized mangaka struggle, but it looks so effortless here, how well all those small narratives come together.

>tfw Fleki ends up volunteering to accompany the Captain on his island adventures post-dungeon, only to realize you can't be rezzed anymore and then wants to go back to prison
She's truly his best cheerleader

Mithrun last desire wasn’t revenge, it was to die. He’s choosing a death that doesn’t involve the demon.
>>
>>291967707
No it absolutely was revenge. Wanting to die deep down was just part of it.
>>
>>291964782
Because that's what happened in the real world.

What about the desire to be tended to in a vegetative state?

I like that it's never established black-and-white what the rules are for demons eating desires. It's up to reader interpretation whether Mithrun still had some desire left, gained new desires, his old desires were mixed with others the demon missed, etc for why he's different
Not a huge spoiler, but in the epilogue extras they show there's other dungeon-lord survivors who can barely function in the outside world anymore after living the high life, so Mithrun and Marcille aren't the only ones to avoid a terrible end fate

Since it doesn't contain spoilers anymore, here's a fun bonus bit for the approaching winter season, with everyone playing Secret Santa.

Nope, haven't you read the Annals of Pattadol?

>with her pet
Wouldn't that be pitiful for her?
I thought her character arc would be leaving behind the comfortable zone she had built around herself since retiring from Carnaries.
>>
Are you planning on doing another storytime OPsama?

>Mithrun
>Forever alone
Nonsense. Even if he's disfigured and ugly to other elves, he still radiates insane amount of sex-appeal to the lesser races

Yeah, I refrained from answering the other anon, since it goes into spoiler territory, if only for 2 chapters, but I think Thistle's fate and the extra about dungeon lord therapy illustrate pretty well how Thistle and Mithrun differ. Thistle didn't have anything to keep him going anymore, especially since he found peace when he saw "Delgal" returned and who then told him it's alright to rest now. Mithrun on the other hand was surrounded by people who care about him enough that he wants to make an effort and start anew. At least that's how I chose to interpret things.

By Mithrun's own admission he was a complete asshole who looked down on everyone around him before he became dungeon lord
Misril was actually being rather nive to him all things considered

You can tell just how much fun Kui had portraying her characters with all those extras. I always enjoy when authors go the extra mile and provide stuff like doing at least little doodles between chapters that have a character comment on some situation in the previous chapter. It's such an easy win and engages the reader more. Though Kui's output volume is kinda insane.

She's too autistic for it to work. Laios' impulsive actions would drive her up the wall insane. She would have a heart attack if someone she cared about did that Ultimate Monster shit
