The endless collabs, VTuber sponsorships, promotional events and marketing campaigns you see today are all attempts to cultivate that same kind of obsessive fandom and organic publicity. KanColle had all of that practically fall into its lap back in 2013 and somehow managed to squander its enormous head start. Even if the producers are fine with it being known only to a small group of Japanese autists, it's just sad to me.
