These guys were not simple humans, but basically a bunch of superhumans that specifically survived the hardship of the early culling on the shinsenkyou.Most of them had innate talent (the brothers, gantestusai), unconsciously grasped the concept of Tao without knowing it (Shion, Sagiri) or got trained hard into using a bootleg version of it without actually grasping how the power works (Gabimaru, the giant , yuzuriya and the other ninjas).The real game changer here was having all this individuals with high tao affinity and some degree of control over it gathered togheter under a teacher (Mei) that could teach them how to control the rules of said powers and optimize their control.In the end of the day Tao is very similar to Nen. Some control it innately, some other needs training, some develop it wrongly …having a teacher to mastery it changes the whole thing

The manga itself gave three reasons why people on the island were able to survive and that were surviving for somebody else, sacrifice and human extremes that lie between two poles like love and hate or live and death. For example in volume seven or eight Gabimaru rejects one of the tensen's claim that it was his talent by referring to the sacrifice he was willing to make and there you had a flashback to that Tenzer guy who was killed by the first tensen encounter. The between life and death example is mentioned by Mu Dan shortly before Shion kills him. The survival for somebody else is what drives Gabimaru and Chobei. The manga itself also picks up on the advantage the tensen have. It's part of Yuri ninjas argument for leaving the island. And then you have to put into perspective what 1000 years mean. Nobody in the group is 50 years old. I guess most of them are around 25 which means the tensen have 40 times the life time of the average group member and this hasn't factored out the childhood through which the tensen only lived once. So you could say that each tensen has 80 times the life time of the average group member meaning that each year of training of the average group member is equivalent to 80 years of training for a tensen who doesn't even need to sustain himself or rest or anything alike. And all of this doesn't pick up on any other power scaling problems
