I want to scanlate Blade of the Immortal since the only English language version available has been butchered by Dark Horse but I can't decide if I should buy physical books and then scan them or if I should just buy digital raws. I know the newest physical releases in other countries were printed from updated higher res scans than the og release but I can't tell if the digital version was also updated to those higher res scans.

On a separate note if I do buy physical versions I can't decide if it's worth it to send them off to one of those book scanning companies or actually sit there and scan each of the 2000 pages one at a time.

Either way I'll be translating from the spanish translation since Japanese is too nuanced and complex for MTL.

thanks for reading my blog post

Colonialism, more accurately.
The third world did not exist as a concept when the English-language forcibly expanded its pool of speakers. The number of words per sentence has dropped sharply during that period, and the grammar was aggressively simplified.

There's a new Photoshop extension environment called UXP which Adobe intends to make the only way to use plugins in a year or two, and Macs already depreciated the old extension environment. But yes it'll still work with your old install, it'll auto select the old CEP files

Thanks. I do wanna TS even a second faster if possible but I reallt don't wanna have to find the latest photoshop to do it.
>>
>>292022527
If you’re token rich you can let Astra/Argon control your photoshop and ts for you in the background. It takes 6 minutes a page the last time I tried.
>>
>>292022830
How much would say a 30 page chapter cost in tokens?
>>
>>292022860
I haven't tested a TS only pipeline, I let it redraw and TS in one pass and I did it using subs not api so I can't really answer the exact token cost.
But on google's 20 usd/mo plan it's probably 100% of your weekly Argon quota and 3 usd worth of banana api cost(for redraw and heavily stylized SFX), the plan includes 10 usd worth of api credits so the banana part could be free.
>>
>>292023107
>$5 to do hours of my work which I can make use of four times a month
It's already at this point, huh. I did use the free Banana thing to end up with redraws better than I can do, even though the current flash models suck balls compared to 3.1 Pro it's still plenty useful.
How does it do SFXs, making use of fonts or does it have Banana generate transparent layers?
>>
>>292023198
>How does it do SFXs, making use of fonts or does it have Banana generate transparent layers?
By default it uses text layers, with suitable font/color/stroke. If the SFX is complex enough it still does the text layer TS but keeps it hidden as a back up and calls banana then unmask the needed area.

I don't care about japanese SFX being translated.

The way its stylised is often more than enough to understand intent.
>>
>>292030004
I skipped translating sfx except the most important ones to understand what was going on for many years and really didn't have any complaints. Considering how much extra work it is doing sfx, especially cleaning and redrawing, it's kinda hard to understand why someone bother putting in the effort honestly. I did full sfx with redrawing for a few chapters and I probably spent twice the amount of time on them because of that.

Even assuming for some retarded reason someone who speaks moon would use an AI to TL instead of their own brain, you'd still want to check it after line by line anyway against the raw to ensure accuracy, so you're hardly saving any time at all besides the few seconds it takes to think of a TL for each line yourself (which would also have more sovl in the first place if you wrote it yourself).

I guess if someone speaks moon but is a filthy fucking ESL it may come in handy as they probably struggle to think of the English equivalent each line. But they would've been MTL'ing all along anyway no doubt, the filth.
>>
>>292040539
It's hard to think of an English equivalent even as a native. It's not as simple as "see Japanese, type English." The AI can work infinitely faster and also catch references and puns that a skilled translator might not.

>hard to think of an English equivalent even as a native

Nah, maybe 10 - 20 seconds per line if you're speeding through it to produce something as rough as what an AI would shit out (bit more when you come across some concept that doesn't quite exist in English/etc which just needs a little thinking or a TN note maybe).

I'd say a 45 - 60 seconds when TL'ing line by line manually to get something more polished, that sounds right for the characters/context which you'll have been keeping in your mind the whole time. And you'll still need to do that polishing process if you want to turn whatever your AI shits out into something more decent and consistent with all the chapters to date/etc. (Well, unless of course you just don't give a shit which seems to be most of the scene these days, pretty disgusting).

At the end of the day you'll hardly be saving any time at all if you want to make something good, so why even bother, just use your damn 脳。
>>
>>292040598
10-20 seconds? In what world? lol In 10-20 seconds, an AI can translate an entire episode of an anime with almost no errors and at pro quality.

Translating shouldn't be the place where you refine your Japanese. People depend on you to understand the language at a competent level, not figuring it out as you go.

Maybe, said as much also, but hardly enough to justify using the shitty tool in the first place that still won't ever feel quite as good as a human TL's output when they've been doing the whole series to date, keeping the characters quirks and context in their mind.

I can write up a script for an average-density shounenshit chapter in 1 - 2 hours generally, hardly a massive sacrifice for a monthly, fortnightly, or even weekly series if it's something you actually like. If I had to check and polish a shitlation engine's output line-by-line, I doubt I'd save more than 30% of the time or so anyway.

And if you don't actually like the series anyway/don't care about providing the readers with something polished, why spend ANY time on it in the first place then at all. Do it right if you like it, or just drop it if you don't.
>>
>>292040749
I doubt your output is any better than a machine's. TL quality on the latest models is leagues above the average scanlation of yesteryear. Whatever TLC you're claiming to put into your work is probably akin to fanfiction.
>>
Personally I'm very good at spotting errors and minor polish opportunities, but if you ask me to TL it myself I'd be extremely slow and inefficient. It's the primary reason I'm mostly doing only TLC these days. Seems like it'd be a good idea to try having AI write my first drafts if I want to TL again huh.

I translate your usual everyday conversation as fast as I can type and I did live-TLs on 4 without even writing out a script beforehand, just a once-over of the manga. Each page in <60 seconds. If you can't do that it just means you're not "past N1".

There are constructions in Japanese which need to be clobbered with a crowbar to fit into English, which can take time, and when you need to look up some kanji or jukugo to make sure you're not pulling it out of your ass. But you should be able to speedread any dumb manga except for those parts.

Think whatever you want MTL-kun. I'm happy with the love I put into whatever I do, which I can do as I don't do anything I don't have at least some interest in.

>TL quality on the latest models is leagues above the average scanlation

Perhaps, I mean the bar of the 'average' scan quality was never that high. And even if it makes less glaring errors these days, you'll still need to check the output as you can't ever truly trust it, and also polish it to make it internally consistent with the rest of the series.

If you have a better way to convey the meaning of random Chink/Nip traditional medicine names like 'Choumeigan' than just breaking down the kanji for the readers (when it's not ateji, and is essentially conveying the meaning in Nip also), do tell. Can make up your own ~liberal TL~ BS name for it too I guess like 'Dr. Monroe's Solid Log Tincture' or something but then that's getting into fanfiction.

It's the literal meaning of each kanji, again you can liberalise it to something if you want (and yes there are products using the name today also for general health homeopathy traditional medicine bullshit), but the context there is a Meiji sex shop selling something with the name for your chinko. Something your shitlation engine would probably ignore as it fetches whatever English name modern shops slap on it.

Yes, that's literally what I said in that very post. Thank you for agreeing.
