I've been rereading the Familiar of Zero and it's crazy how much higher quality older isekai ised to be compared to the modern stuff. It's also disappointing how much the anime cut and changed from the original light novels because the novels clearly take place in the 1600s rather than a medieval setting and now I'm wishing the author didn't die of cancer because I'd kill for more Alatriste/Sharpe's Rifles/Hornblower/Master and Commander style adventures in the setting as well as exploring Germania and the Rub Al Khali.

There's some stories that you can just tell had a lot of love put into them and Familiar of Zero was definitely one of them.

I think a big issue is that older authors were so much more literate and educated than modern authors. As someone who has read the Three Musketeers and other stories by Dumas as well as a fan of the time period, you can tell the author really did his research for the time period as well as the Dumas stories he adapted. For example the whole early arc with getting the princess's letter from Albion was an adaptation of chapters 19-22 of The Three Musketeers where the Musketeers have to go to England to retrieve the queen's diamond jewelry from her secret lover, the Duke of Buckingham and then mixing in the IRL English Civil War that happened about 40 years later.

Well on one hand the mage CF had it happen against her will and only once but she also did dump the MC who had been her boyfriend to get with the hero.
