It was great and I teared up watching it sometimes. Related to many aspects of both characters, loved that her song at the end didn’t even matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Awajima Hyakkei was better
>>292091190Its a very mature anime with a lot of real moments
>>292091449can you list 3 of those? why do you think it's mature? are you a foid?
>>292091322No. Just a guy raised almost exclusively by women.
It was great. I loved alot of it. I particularly loved the constant "visions" the characters had, usually of the desert, but occasionally other things. Felt like a really fun and novel way to get across their feelings. It was also very emotionally poigniant. The two parts that stick out to me are when asadoggey is talking to her dyke friend on the phone and starts crying because she misses her and needs someone to talk to, and also when she finally breaks down and has her cathartic grieving moment while reading makio's foidslop book. It's very high on my list for this year, but it's not top spot. The one thing that holds it back is that I felt the second part of it, after that catharsis, was a bit aimless and weaker than the first, which had a strong core of asa learning how she grieves. I think that it was a bit aimless on purpose, because asa herself was also feeling aimless, so it's not like it's some kind of terrible mark against the show, but it did just feel lacking compared to how tightly written and intresting the first part was
>>292091443I do agree. While I love ikkoku nikki, I feel like awajima hyakkei stands above it for a couple reasons. Firstly, it's extremely well written, moreso than IN because of just how effortlessly every character's story interweaves with eachother. It feels like a puzzle and when you manage to put together who is related to whom and who what these relationships are and where they land in the timeline, it feels great. It also manages to tell really REALLY intresting stories in such a short amount of time. Most episodes just flew by because of stories were just so engaging. I'll be honest and say I can barely remember anyone's names, but I liked all of them and the best thing it did, as an anthology, was make me want more of each character. It's a very scaleable story, and if you were to focus in on an individual one, you can actual get a full cour out of each character. But it goes to show how great the writing is that it was still satisfactory even with such little screentime on each. My favorite trio was that youngest generation of three girls who all adored the one really ikemen actress. I forget their names, but I think sarah was one of them. Also, the animation and art style were sublime, as it to be expected from the mad dogs at madhouse. The one thing I was slightly dissapointed by was that they didn't do much cgdct-ing. Meaning they didnt show really any of their practice and training and stuff like that. But it's understandable because that's not the kind of story it's trying to be. I still think of the ending on the train every so often and tear upWork of artTHIS is why I watch anime
>>292092867>It was great. I loved alot of it. I particularly loved the constant "visions" the characters had, usually of the desert, but occasionally other things.i mean, that's the whole point of the anime, that's why it has 違国 in the title. again i don't understand why it's localized as "witch" instead of being diary of the "different country" or whatever the proper equivalent would be (aka the metaphor for adulthood or life post parents death or whatever)makio is literally me, i liked every scene with her in it. asa was stereotypical dumb teen. most of the plot went nowhere, though i guess it's the adaptation's fault. and for some reason all women in this anime looked like men.also i'm kinda torn about the nolan-esque editing. don't get me wrong, i liked it, but i'm not sure if it was needed.
>>292093162Asa is a doggeyIdk I like the localized title. It obviously doesn't make sense cause makio isn't a witch lol, but it's a nice name. I think I remember in the threads someone said it should be "journal with the queen of a foreign land" or something, but that's a mouthfulAlso yeah some anons were critical of asa for being a normalfag I remember
>>292091443>>292092867>>292093044I've said this before but for me I think the supreme emotional heights of Ikoku Nikki place it very slightly above Awajima Hyakkei's technical competence and its greater focus on its overarching themes. They're both still far and away the best two shows of the year though.
>>292091190>inb4 foidsloppaFuck off. It could have been a nice thread.
>>292091190Nigger.
>>292091190Very good! 10/10I cry every episode.
>>292093634I think it mostly comes down to personal taste at that point when you're talking about the emotional highs. I empathized with both of the shows, but I think I slightly prefer awajima. I think the 3 generation story episode that followed that cunt grandma who couldn't love her homely daughter because she wasn't pretty enough was one of the best episodes of anime I've ever watched, unironically. It felt like a feature legnth movie in 20 minutes. And that ending line was soulwrenching>she taught me how to love

>>292091190Is it similar to my GOAT? Is it still burning to this day?
>>292091190Could have been interesting if it focused on the old lady's 'friends with benefits' romance, but it just barely touches it.
>>292091190Probably my favorite anime of 2026, easily. Really, really well done.
>>292091443>Awajima HyakkeiNo one as hot as Makio, so it can't be.
>>292093162>>292093289Makio isn't literally a Witch, but she's a single older woman that live alone in her aspie cave who does little other than write most of the time. She isn't a witch, but she's also the type of person that would be called a 'bitter old witch' by someone that disliked her.
>>292094019I think that was matched by the Minori episode in Ikoku Nikki. That level of absolute emptiness without it just being suffering porn is super rare to see.Like it wasn't some memey thing where its just a trainwreck of bad things happening. Instead it was a really well handled way to show a person realize that their life is ruined and there's no fixing that and that they don't have it in themselves to change enough to fix it.
>>292095896I dropped that after about 5 minutes so I would say no.
>>292091190It was alright, but a little masturbatory. MC was obviously a self-insert from the start, which was fine, but it felt shameless by the end.
>>292096076So true
>>292097281Nah
>>292093162>again i don't understand why it's localized as "witch"Because the Japanese subtitle is "Diary with Witch" written in English. You'd know this if you looked at the title card.
>>292091190Fantastic show that suffers a bit in the final third, one of the best shows of recent years. It's very much worth a watch, a down-to-earth drama with relatable and interesting characters and fantastic direction>>292092867Glad I'm not alone in issues with the second half, it was still good but the first 8 episodes were just flawless. >>292091443Awajima Hyakkei was a show I really wish I liked. I thought the animation and direction were suberb but I struggled caring for the characters and their stories, I only got like 3 episodes in. I remember thinking the "bouncing back and forth in time" type storytelling did more to hurt the show than help it
>>292097281Having read the author's other works, I think Minori was closer to her self-insert. She really likes writing depressed women that swim in ennui. Makio is too mentally healthy for that.
>muh le introspection on grief and le found family and le coming of age story>look inside>it's bandshit
>foidsloppaNo thx
>>292100194A bit of spoilers here for the manga that continues on past the anime's ending - It was kinda funny how much the anime focused on Asa singing and her talent for it, because the manga more or less drops the entire gimmick immediately afterwards and it isn't really ever brought up again as a major part of Asa's personality.
>>292100239from what i understood the anime won't get a sequel, right? so if i care about the story i should read the manga?
>>292099785*journal with witchbut yeah, i see, i thought it was added together with subs. still, "Diary of a Strange Land" is a much better title
>>292100258The manga's ending made me cry in a good way, so I'd 100% recommend it. The anime is a tight package, while the manga becomes less focused as Asa deals with trying to understand her father which is intentionally more emotionally vague. Among other things.
>>292095836She was a good kid. Glad she got a cute girlfriend.
>>292100194The more melodrama, the better the band show
>>292100572I liked her seething arc.
>>292091432>what's good about it according to you? Most anime are written by autists that don't understand people that well. That isn't bad because they're not about people being people, but about other things. This one was written by someone that actually understands humans.
I like it.

>>292100893makio has literal assburgers
>>292101198No shit? Makio is a well written aspie being written by someone that is also able to write neurotypical characters with great delicacy and accuracy. The author understands people really well and can write a realistic version of a lot of different types of human.
>>292100572Woof
>>292101165Sir that is a dog
>>292101233Except men lol
>>292102218Makio face when Asa is teen pregnant
>>292102218Kasamachi is well written.
>>292091190I like the delayed grieving scene, where it just hits her.I'm still waiting for my moment three years after my grandpa died.
>>292102291I'm the father
The author lady breaking up with her boyfriend simply because "he was too nice to her" was the biggest woman moment I experienced in recent years while watching anime. It was ridiculous.
>>292102291Makio lucked out that Asa's desire for attention didn't swing over to boys.
>>292093634I think the way I would put it is that Ikoku Nikki is a story about people, while Awajima Hyakkei is a story about characters. Makio and Asa feel like real human beings with real agency and real emotions undergoing a real journey of self-discovery. Meanwhile the Awajima Hyakkei characters feel - deliberately - more like roles filled by actors. It's almost like watching one of those Hollywood docu-flicks about, say, Marilyn Monroe or Michael Jackson - a person that, while human, has become such an icon that, even behind the scenes, they still feel larger than life. That's why Awajima feels more tightly plotted, while Ikoku Nikki feels warmer and more down to earth.
>>292102488I mean... If men get a gf equivalent of that they cheat because relationship shouldn't just be about overwhelming your partner with support. That was the problem they had in their relationship, he was too integrated into her safety so she didn't feel independent anymore, and that made her feel uncomfortable. She did love him, but that feeling like your bf is always anticipating you is exhausting. He's not too nice, he's not giving her space to be her own person.
>>292102488She had a sperg out and blew up the relationship over some trivial bullshit. But they didn't get back together even though Kasamachi clearly wanted to because she felt she was a broken toy and he could get with a better woman any time he wanted.

>>292103891Makio is actually into that until after she started loving Asa.
>>292103439It was important because it made Asa realize that she had nothing that she cared that much about to have a meltdown about losing.Asa's whole struggle is against emptiness more than sorrow.

>>292103968>having nothing to bitch about is a problemwomen moment
>>292102630>he was too integrated into her safety so she didn't feel independent anymore, and that made her feel uncomfortableHoly woman moment
>>292104172Realizing that you don't have anything to care about is deeply disheartening.Realizing that you don't have a big dream or goal or plan and that there isn't anything out there that you want to hold onto is absolutely depressing. If there is nothing in the world that you want to live for, why bother being alive?
>>292104470i'm not saying that it's a worthless theme. if anything, in terms of choosing theme this anime was unironically great, the problem is the execution. like the grief part was executed really well, because it was a natural development from living together with an aspie, but the other thing felt shoehorned and a little to much on the nose, kinda like they came up first with "patriarchy le bad" and then tried to insert it somewhere into the plot
My favorite moment was when the two male characters had a discussion about how bad the patriarchy was and how much they hate acting manly
>>292104905this but ironically
>>292104905I'm happy I didn't watch it then.
>>292104535The inciting incident was topical to actual events in Japan around the time of publication. The same as including some stuff about Weinstein or Epstein or a similar sex scandal in American fiction. It was topical and the idea that an overachiever classmate could have a breakdown because they realize that their efforts might all be for naught because of circumstances out of their control is impactful in its own right. For Asa and the plot it matters because she's just drifting aimlessly and sees someone that was extremely motivated potentially lose their entire future and she realizes that she has to make a change because there's nothing she cares that much about. That is what kicks off her drive to find something that she alone can "own". Everyone else has something that couldn't bear to lose and Asa is just Asa, the girl with dead parents who can't even parlay that into songwriting.
>>292105010Sounds like retarded feminist crap.
>>292105010>It was topicalyes, that's my issue, keep that shit out of my animes, thanks
>>292104905Yeah, that episode left a sour taste in my mouth because of how unexpectedly preachy it was. Le patriarchy jumpscare just came out of nothing. I heard that this plays out a little better in the manga, but I haven't read it, so can't comment. Other than this, I liked the show. Especially the first half.
>>292104160No one knows what will happen about her admission. She's just decided to accept that there's something she can't change and to keep going. Asa doesn't mend the rift in her heart with the song, but Asa does convince her to keep moving on.
>>292105078That is moronic. Fiction is always going to reference stuff that happens IRL, directly or indirectly. Ghost in the Shell talks about the USSR, Mossad, etc., because it was written at a time where those two were active in the world of military and spy work. Barefoot Gen talks about WW2 and the post-war rebuilding because it was written during that time period. Ikoku Nikki mentions the medical school admissions scandal because it was germane to a story about a high school girl trying to take that step into adulthood and what she would have to deal with. With the utility being demonstrating to a character that she wasn't hurt by the scandal because she didn't care that much about anything in her future for the idea to matter. Asa not getting into the school she wanted didn't matter because she didn't have a school she wanted to attend.
>>292105097I don't even remember that part, I mainly remember Makio being incredibly preachy.
>>292102218Every man alive would fall in love with Makio within 5 minutes of meeting her.
>>292102630>if men get a gf like that they cheatShut the fuck up foidoid you're just making shit up
>>292104160What happened to her didn't matter. She was written in specifically to cause some form of character development for asa. She fulfilled her purpose. Not saying that second part of the story was amazing, but it wasnt dogshit

>>292106395I think it was less her trying to be cool that bothered anons, and more the time where she nearly killed Makio with the, "Why can't you just be normal?", line.Asa has more of her mother in her than you notice at first, but that line in particular brought it to the forefront. I remember someone called her the "eternal normalfag" and that made me laugh at the absurdity.

She never wanted to do anything other than be like everyone else and therefore doomed herself spiritually because she didn't have anything she cared about.Asa became her only reason to not kill herself.
>>292111702Well, Minori just wanted to be loved. She wanted acceptance from her peers, which is something most normalfaggots crave. You fuckers crave it, too, don't fucking lie. You just want acceptance from other anons and spergs like yourselves. She played herself by getting plapped by a retard who didn't love her. That was her biggest mistake by far. But she did love Asa and she wanted Asa to never feel the way she did, which meant she wanted Asa to be accepted by her peers because she felt like she wasn't to an extent. As for her relationship with Makio, they just both couldn't understand eachother because they were too different, but Minori never hated Makio or held any kind of resentment towards her or anything like that. And if I remember right, she only had good things to say about Makio to other people, including Asa. She was proud of her for being an authorette. This part is speculation but I'm betting that her biggest regret in life is letting her relationship with her sister deteriorate. As far as Makio goes, she was too sensitive to her words and never got over the few times she percieved Minori as being mean to her. But I'm not certain Minori ever wanted to be that mean or malicious, she just didn't realize her sister couldn't handle that kind of talk and would shut her out. Basically, they were both in the wrong here
For me, it's Emiri.
>>292112147I think Minori softened on Makio after she got knocked up and realized her perfect life was now unattainable. She realized that Makio, even if she was a weird autistic girl, was true to herself and willing to buck any trend that limited her. Minori couldn't do that and grew to admire Makio from a distance for it. Complimenting Makio to Asa even if it was impossible to repair their direct relationship.Minor grew from hating Makio for being a freak to admiring her for being a contrarian.
https://youtu.be/0XVtW-b09BQI love Asa's singing voice.
>>292091190Why /a/ incels like foidslop so much?
>>292112306The thing is I'm not sure she ever "hated" herI think what makes more sense is that she was jealous of her because she didn't have this desire to be like everyone else but she wasn't self aware enough to understand that envy, so she lashed out and called her a sperg and got a chair thrown at her. But yeah, she probably definitely matured after having Asa and likely understood herself better and understood why she treated Makio unjustly. But hate is a really strong word that's tied to malice, and I don't think Minori was ever malicious at all. She was just kinda retarded in her own way. I think IF, she had been in a car accident but survived, she would have used that near death opportunity to try and rebuild her relationship with Makio and try to understand her better. But we can never know that for sureOn a different note, I found it really intresting and humorous that lots of Asa's turmoil about the journal her mom left behind came from this idea that she ingrained in herself that journals don't have to be the truth. It was something Makio said that she didn't even remember lol but Asa took that to heart because she's a writer, so she IS kindof an authority figure when it comes to writing stuff lmao. So here Asa is getting mad at her mom because she can't trust her words in the journal, meanwhile Makio didn't even remember saying that line, and Minori was, 99% chance, completely telling the truth. Why the fuck would she lie to her daughter about loving her? Why the fuck would she lie to her daughter about the insecurities she had and stuff? Of course that journal was her real feelings. But Asa unfortunately inherited via osmosis some amount of autism from the sperg

>>292112494I don't think Minori hated Makio in the way that Makio hated her. But I do think she disliked Makio and the type of sloppy and weird woman she was.Makio was geeky, childish, messy, and couldn't talk to people correctly while Minori obsessed over social fluency. Makio was a screw up that would never make it while Minori would marry the right guy and live the perfect life.I don't know if I'd call what Minori did 'maturation'.I guess in a sense she became more of an adult. But to me it was more that she hit a peak of self-loathing for being a 'failure' that got knocked up by a weird loser (one that seemed even more socially repressed than Makio) that didn't love her and that led her to start envying Makio for being strong in ways that Minori herself couldn't be. Makio could have walked with that child and been a single mother or found some way to keep her head high. Instead Minori meekly tried to play house and pretend she didn't hate every day she woke up. Minori didn't have hobbies and didn't have true friends. All she had was a perfect facade that didn't attract the right guy.Asa became Minori's life because Asa was the one thing that Minori could be hopeful about.Asa could be the Minori that didn't become a depressed housewife.

>>292115682If she was a boy do you think Makio would sex Asa?
>>292106593Asa is a good girl. Considering the trauma she's going through and how autistic Makio is, she could be taking it a lot worse. I like how she's not written like a perfect adorable victim but a nuanced character who feels like an actual teenage girl with all the baggage it entails.
>>292102197>the puppy that lost her parents has been living at the queen's house
>>292102488>>292103439For me the worst part was >>292104905. The author was able to write a female character who doesn't fit into feminine expectations so excellently in Makio but when it comes to writing a male character who doesn't fit into masculine expectations that's what she came up with.
>>292103439>>292115818Those two guys didn't want to conform to social expectations and had problems externalizing their feelings, but yes it was a bit of a stretch to drop the hard P, like reducing the whole issue to just one topic
The aunt is a self involved psychopath and the whole premise of the manga is bitterly ironic.
>>292091190The initial arc is so fucking good. The scene where Asa finally reads her mother's journal really sticks with me even to this day. Extremely good show, even if it wanders a bit in the second half when the very tight focus on Asa's grief loosens. And the presentation filters a lot of people that wouldn't get it anyway which is a plus.
