Dancing Star 3 Review: “A finale that is a bit too Pretty Cure”A few days ago I finally saw Dancing Star 3 and I came out of it a bit mixed on it. Going in I knew that I certainly wouldn’t have loved it as much as I loved Dancing Star 2 (which I personally consider a masterpiece of the Magical Girl genere) but I wouldn’t say I was necessarily disappointed by it either, since this last entry is (as far as I can tell through the fan-made translation) still a perfectly solid conclusion to the Dancing Star Story.More than anything else I’d say that this finale gets full points in how much it adheres to the structure of Pretty Cure finales and the way the message of Hope winning against Despair gets delivered. There is even a “miracle light” moment at one point in which the audience is asked to cheer for the Cures in the moment of upmost danger, which I think about gives you an idea on how the story fully embraces all of the Pretty Cure conventions, usually for the better… but not entirely so. In this sense Dancing Star 3 feels more similar to Dancing Star 1 since they both come across a lot more like a “generic Pretty Cure Stage Show”, as (unlike Dancing Star 2) neither of them mange to leverage all of their unique elements to create a story the main anime could never possibly tackle; but they rather settle for a still perfectly respectable, but not as innovative, transposition of the franchise’s key elements into this new format

Despite the 3 hours of run-time the show needs to give space to no less than 4 major storylines! Cure Top’s storyline, The “Victim of the day” storyline (which is tied to Top’s), Pas De Deux’s (the fairy) storyline, and the general plot tied to the main villain.That’s a lot of stuff to balance, and frankly all of these stories could have easily be turned into their own stage shows but as they are forced to share the same 3 hours, it can sort of feel like they end up competing for relevance.I think the only fix for this would have been added run time to spread out the storylines better, since even if it never feels as if time is being wasted and the storylines do blend into eachother very seamlessly, in my eyes the real problem is that the characters (and by extension the audience) aren’t allowed to just sit with the uncomfortable feelings for a long enough time to really make them sink in before moving on to the next plot point.

From the main Cures to the secondary characters to returning cast members, Dancing Star 3 offers plenty of full circle moments that ultimately gives the whole story a sense of completeness that can be sort-of-rare to find in Pretty Cure.The tight nit nature of all the plot-lines explored across its 3 instalments allows for their natural consequences to be displayed with remarkable consistency. Character development gets carried over effortlessly as it truly feels that all of the souls populating this stage show have experienced precise mile-stone events, both good and bad, that shape who they are and how they act moment-by-moment (something the main shows with their 16 hours of total runtime spread across 50 episodes can’t really achieve to the same effortless degree).Even if this last instalment might feel overly busy at times, the upside of this plot-lines galore is that it truly feels like nothing went-unaddressed. There isn’t any-one character you can point to and say “well they got kinda shafted by the writing” like it can sometime happen in regular Pretty Cure seasons. In Dancing Stars, although the spotlight isn’t divided mathematically to the point of perfect equality, each-and-every-character manages to go through a consistent development at their own pace.

The next biggest problem was "This plot with Blue sucks and he's a paper mache cutout that the girls are falling in love with" which may be the biggest complaint. The plot hinged on multiple girls crushing on Blue but we know nothing about him because the show decided that wasn't important.I can't believe I'm living in newfag times where people are defending Happiness Charge. When it aired it was unanimous that it was one of the worst seasons ever.

If that had been a couple of Honey focus episodes I think less people would have complained about international cures being squandered, and also about Honey being barely a character. Having said all this, HaCha is still my favorite season. It was ambitious and it still did a lot of things well.
