I think there has always been shit writing, its just much easier to see in the modern times. Like pulp novellas and penny horrors were a thing in the 1800s but because they were so cheap didn't survive for the most part. Instead, time let the cream rise to the top and we mostly only remember "classics" which tend to get reprinted and stand the test of time. Film is a little different because it is younger as a medium and the barrier for entry wasn't owning a printing press but instead in the 70's introducing camcorders. So you did have a bunch of shitty awful movies that went straight to home video, usually cheap horror movies. If a big budget film was bad, it was just forgotten and not really preserved either physically or in the cultural memory. Now the funny thing is that pornography in both these mediums typically shared the same as these. You had pornography printed on cheap pulp paper next to awful horror novellas and shitty porn on vhs shot on camcorder with the shitty cheap horror movies. The internet changed all that. You can now easily preserve and spread shitty writing almost easier than something that's well written, and then streaming really devalued writing in film and television as quantity was scene as a better marketing point than quality for streaming services. Now my theory is that the higher exposure to normalized shitty writing to aspiring writers led to a negative effect where first drafts were seen as acceptable and these tropes started to be used with abandon. I do agree that the fact that making WEGs is really only profitable for slavs and third worlders for the most part means we are getting not only shitting writing, but a caricature of shitty writing seen through a foreign lense and then machine translated. However for WEGs, you do have a few well written ones that sit atop the pile to give a little bit of hope to us.

Ended up playing 20+ hours of Starmaker Story over the weekend... Nice vibe and really addictive game, reminded me of when I got stuck playing Dave the Diver. It's AI slop which I usually don't bother with, but the lo-fi pixelation somehow makes it a lot more agreeable, and it helps that the style is consistent with fun characters, occasionally pretty clever writing, and great presentation.

Yeah, definitely the most enjoyable mini-games in any weg I've played, particularly that D&D one.

I also liked that they simplified the sandbox grind by removing the time of day and keeping a lot of locations occupied with characters or events. Often in similar sandbox wegs you'll have not only different weekdays, but also 3-4 times of day. So either you go round and round rooms/locations that are empty 90% of the time, fast-forwarding through the time of day to hit the right trigger, which is really tiresome, or you just look at the quest guide or a walkthrough, which makes the whole sandbox aspect kind of pointless.

Starmaker hit the right balance for exploration, where you would almost always find something to do or progress by just randomly walking around, without having to rely on a guide much at all.
