If I tell people I'm going to Thailand will they assume I'm doing sex tourism? I just wanna see the weird pointy houses and eat their food.

Really depends on who you are as a person, do people think of you as cultured? Do you travel a lot (why Thailand and not Japan? Europe?) ? Are you a single guy?
If you have to ask you probably already know the answer

just go and don't care about what other people think
if they think you're the kind of guy that travels to SE asia for hookers they already think you're paying for hookers in the US, their opinions are not changing

They all mention ladyboys. Only a couple connoisseurs mentioned prostitutes. I didnt indulge anyway. You can start training muay thai if you need a rock solid alibi to trick any nosey neds

I remember when I was in high school my chemistry teacher was taking trips to Thailand multiple times a year and shared pictures with us. As a 15 year old I just thought "wow, he must really be into Thai culture" lol.

As someone who has been to Thailand about ten times (never for sex tourism):
If they know anything about Thailand, then they'll know the places where you stay will say what you're doing. If you go to Pattaya, then yeah you'll be judged. Phuket is also less famous for this, but the outskirt beaches like Karon are less so. Bangkok you should be fine, if you stay away from the big tourist areas like Khao San road.

Just be honest about the gross stuff you see, and speak about it without being weird.

Fun story: I was in Bangkok with my Thai ex a few years ago on New Years, near Khao San road. We went out to get food at like 2AM, and we overheard some men talking close to us. She made a face so I asked her what they were talking about, and she said they were all disappointed that the white man they were trying to get drunk enough to take home and rape got creeped out and left.

So, yeah, don't be stupid either.

That could've also been Mexico

Unfortunately a lone male traveling to any third world with lots of poor will be assumed a sex tourist. I have backpacked throughout Latin america, southeast asia, central asia and south asia. Every trip and multiple occasions I am propositioned. Even though I stay away from bars and clubs it still happens because I'm from a first world country and a white male. You can be in the middle of bumfuck on a mountain and some guy will try to sell his sister.
Anyway if your purpose is to travel and experience other cultures and people just decline. First time I went to Mexico City to visit the museums and Teotihuacán the driver from the airport immediately asked what I wanted. Woman, no. Man, hell no, boy or girl, NO. The fucker was flustered, he only got the ride fare. Same kind of shit in Nepal, Cambodia, Guatemala, etc. But shit happens in the US too. My wife is Asian and we went to Las Vegas to visit one of her friends. We got on a hotel elevator and two lumpy white women (just loud enough for me to hear) how pathetic for a man to need a prostitute.
